      And i think the game at 3:57 is Star Voyager, but i can't remember if that was on PC or Nintendo. It was somewhere in the mid 80's. I had a pc that an EGA screen. 3 colors! That game had kind of the same sound effects as Space Quest. If you listen closely to the many different sound effects, you WILL get a headache :-) Thanks for the trip down memory lane. I'm old....

    I couldn't agree more. I *started* playing Elite in VR on my old Oculus Rift. It made for a challenging start, since I was trying to simultaneously learn how to play the game and memorize how to do all of the controls by touch (including controls i didn't yet know the function of). That first entire weekend I barely undocked, flew around the station, and re-docked, but it was absolutely magical seeing this world that is previously only seen in wireframe on a Commodore 64 come to life around me in rich detail! When I looked over and saw the old Space Traders Flight Training Manual ticket into a side compartment in my Sidewinder's cockpit I knew I was home.
    Nowadays I mostly play in pancake mode just so I'm not completely cut off from anything happening in the house in the real world, but when when I know I have time and don't have on-foot activities planned, I put on the Quest 3 and am still blown away every time. There's nothing like it!

      I have also used Oculus Rift for ED. I hate to say it, but you need to change. The HP Regen 2 for instance, ( and I didn't believe this was possible) doesn't have any bespoke software. It uses Windows mixed reality meshed with Steam and ED VR services perfectly. The colours, resolution, depth, FPS everything is better. Settings are in ED Forum. Just put in a search.

    I see alot of "I quit because odyssey didnt have VR" comments. If there was another option for space combat w/ hotas in VR or exploring the vastnes of the final frontier in VR, i could understand. But sadly this is the only option. I take breaks but cant give it up. Nothing compares.

    Totally agreed. I started coming back to Elite Dangerous a few months ago just for testing the VR on my Quest 3. And oh boy is it well implemented and working great (apart from the Odyssey on foot stuff, that is still in 2D with a 2D-canvas within VR). I couldn't stop till today. The immersion is just breathtaking. I played a lot in VR since 2019 (Oculus Rift S) but never had such a blast. Fun fact: while driving the SRV I got motion sick for several hours ;D So, newcomers in VR beware! If you got the money, I would recommend the Quest 3, because the lenses are far superior generation wise. Quest 2 is still ok for testing VR, sure.

    • @Mile13Gaming
      @Mile13Gaming  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      How much improvement do you see on the Quest 3? I know the lenses and resolution are way better, so I'm waiting for an excuse to upgrade.
      I also totally got motion sick from the SRV as well, but after a little bit, I guess I just got used to it. Kind of like VR in general. It actually kind of made my SRV driving better, because I learned better control, LOL.

      @@Mile13Gaming The difference is huge. The biggest selling point for me is the so called edge to edge clarity because of the lens design (pancake lenses). It means you could look with your eye in every direction of the lens (even the edges) and there is no distortion or blurry. Whereas the Quest 2 always has these issues (fresnel lenses). This means the readability of text is only in the center middle view of the lenses possible with Quest 2 - an issue the Quest 3 has not.

    I got into Elite with a Quest 1 in 2020. Screen door effect (text looked like seeing through a screen door and was hard to read) but I was hooked and will never play it flat. Quest 2 is a solid experience. I also have Reverb G2 which is better but harder to run and Windows is killing it. Index is too low resolution. My Pimax Crystal (regular) with local dimming is gorgeous if you have the GPU power and a strong neck. I really enjoy playing in VR, for every reason you've mentioned, but still end up playing with TrackIR most often. I find the extra effort and the added fatigue (like physical pain from having the thing strapped to my cheekbones) makes longer sessions of tedious jumping or grinding bounties or whatever much less appealing. That could just be my setup and not an experience representative of most users, idk.
    VR in Elite still feels mostly like a novelty to me rather than a viable way to actually play through game loops, but I absolutely don't want to discredit anyone who feels otherwise! I think I'm just playing Elite for different reasons now than before, and I'm sure that'll change again :) I'm just glad the game still has my interest at all after all this time.

      I have the same head strap he's using in the video. Bobovr, but mine has the removable battery. It makes all the difference. I hated the stock strap just squeezing it to my face. Now the quest more or less hangs in front of my face, and the strap holds it up. I just did about six hours of project cars 2 (so sitting down, but still in vr) and I could easily keep going all day. The battery can be hot swapped, and they say with two you can just keep swapping and charging all day. I only have the one, so I can't verify this. I can attest to the comfort of the strap. It's night and day.

    Well I agree with you on getting into VR is great experience and have done so for many years now. I started with the original Oculus Rift which needed external tracking devices. Now I am using the Quest 3 which has built in inside out tracking and wireless.
    I went with the Quest 3 for a little more money for it has more power, better lenses, color passthrough, and works very well with my gaming PC with a RTX-3080TI. I connect the headset via a USB Link Cable to the PC for playing PCVR SIM racing games.
    The Quest 2 is a nice VR headset, but with prices dropping on them, I feel the Quest 2 is slowly being phased out for the new "Quest 3 S" lower cost VR headset - possible replacement headset.
    Elite Dangerous or any of these type of games I am not really into them anymore. I am saving all my disk space on my computer for any new SIM racing games that are coming out. Most of them are also in VR.

BUT, as most know, Microsoft is stupidly killing WMR in Windows, so headset that only work with the WMR portal will cease to work. I play through Steam (I use the Steam for WMR interface). I've stopped all Windows updates because I can't play ED without VR. I do NOT want to play VR games ON the headset in standalone. I DO want to use my PC. So, given the price drop, can I confidently switch to the Quest 2 as a straight replacement for my Acer?

    • @Mile13Gaming
      @Mile13Gaming  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      While I do use the standalone features of the Quest quite a bit, I use it with my PC even more. There are two options to use the PC with the Quest: Quest Link (using a USB-C cable - what I do), and Air Link (using WiFi). So yes, you should be able to do the same as you're doing now but with a Quest, and I believe the Quest has a higher resolution image as well. Plus, you would also have the option to play games in the standalone Quest library, should you ever want to.

    It doesn't seem like there's anything in VR that doesn't give me what I already have with TrackIR, aside from the depth of field. I can move my head and look around and keep my eyes on bounty targets, see asteroids above me when I'm mining, and keep my eyes outside when I'm landing.

      I am in the same boat.
      I would LIKE to try VR though, but I am not sure if my stomach - let alone my PC - can handle it. ^^
      200 $ is not pocket change for me, just to try something out that I might end up not using.
      So yeah, If you are prone to motion sickness or can't afford the hardware, a regular head tracker is a valid option.
      TrackHat from the UK had a cheap alternative to TrackIR available, but they appear to not offer it anymore; instead, they now offer a camera-only solution for around 100 pound (about 150 $ with shipping, I assume).
      Speaking of which:
      Down to Earth Astronomy has made a video about a year ago, talking about using the software "Opentrack" and a regular WebCam.
      th-cam.com/video/TqMOkS-7z-s/w-d-xo.html
      I have no idea which solution I will pick up, should my TrackIR ever break.^^

      To be honest, I've seen TrackIR, and it really doesn't compare to the same experience. TrackIR isn't as natural, especially if you're using a single monitor. Your head turns, but you still need to keep your eyes trained on the monitor, and the screen doesn't move at the same rate it actually would if you were looking around. I get how it makes looking around more convenient, but I think that's the limit. In my opinion, there's no comparison between the two.
      I'm not saying it's worthless, and if it works for you, by all means. I'm just saying they're two completely different experiences.
