    The Andertons busking challenge: Small budget for a battery powered amp and guitar from the store - you setup together for an hour in Guildford town centre with a hat (or something) in front of each of you and see who gets the most shrapnel!

      I always kind of wished that music stores wouldn't have music playing in the background. It fucks me up, I'll pick something up wanting to try a specific song/sound, and then all I can think of is the song that's playing.
      On the other hand, I've had fun jams with complete strangers just because we would all naturally play along with the radio at GC lol

    I've got the Vox DA5 which is the earlier version of the Mini 5 without the drum machine.The perfect practice amp. For the best sound keep the gain below halfway and if you need more drive use a pedal.I have it permanently switched to the 0.5 watt setting and my neighbour reckons he can still hear me even though my house is detached from his!

    • @nwonomad
      @nwonomad 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, amazing little amp...I have the new one (the drum machine isn't amazing)....I live in an abandoned house so I had no other option when I bought it, I'm playing a Mexican Strat through it and I can't believe how good it sounds, not to mention the range of cabs to choose from

    Thank you for the great review. I was leaning toward an old childhood friend, the Pignose, but I knew there had to be something better out there. I ordered and just received my Vox amp. I have to say that this little guy does everything and more that I could ask for. Thanks!

  • @Mephilis78
    @Mephilis78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think Vox has the best mini amps. Not only do they sound almost like their full sized counterparts (Valvetronix) but they have very good modeling tech. Orders of magnitude better than Line6's modeling.

    I absolutely love my little Vox Mini 3 Gen 1 for practice. I've even used it for recording clean with a mic for color and add effects in a DAW, and they just sound killer. Wonderful little amps!

    I know these amps have been out for a while, but checked out the Mini 5 recently and was really impressed. Better than the Fly and Boss. A little more expensive, but worth the difference. Sound more robust and less fizzy than the competition.

    "Don't say we only do expensive gear reviews". I never thought that. I always found you guys did a pretty good balance between affordable gear and expensive stuff. Maybe the reputation comes from the fact that expensive stuff tends to be the newer approach to guitar technology and manufacturing? Which makes sense, as there's a point of diminishing returns if cheaper guitars are just using the same baseline tech and manufacturing process - as greatly as they have been improved the last decade or so - where the differences is really just brand and which brand is willing to go for the smallest profit margin. Otherwise reviewing 'the more expensive' gear is more an exercise in reviewing different tech and manufacturing paradigms these companies adopt over time.

    Interesting comment, Use one of these (from the line up) as a practice/song writing amp where quite often I go and commune with nature, Last time I was on a volcano surrounded by vocations. there biggest problem is they are not that loud wispier like is more the sound that you here in person but they do seem to mike up well or feed the headphone output into a sound card and the recorded sounds are OK at a pinch. They are more redeeming than that amp that came with the guitar package at the lowest price in the shop :)

    It doesn't get any better in terms of size and quality for price - Vox is simply the best sounding amp emulation out there for the cost. DSP technology sounds great in these little amps, as well as the Tonelab and Stomplab series, and the VT series.

      Amazing full tube amps come out of Bugera and you can get a 22 watt used for 250 with infinite tube monitoring. FX, dual channel, mid boost, variable output, and a good control pedal for gain and the rather good built in reverb.

    I rigged this up to a blackheart b15 combo which has generally very bassy 12" speaker via the headphone socket on the mini 3 (turn volume knob on mini 3 right down) if your using a larger speaker as it could damage it about 1/4 volume on the mini 3 is fine. And my word! I got an ace sound out of it and could easily be gigged the slight tinny speaker of the mini 3 was then bypassed to give a great overall sound the tinny and the bassy compliment each other

    One thing I always wondered is... how would it sound to get plenty of little amps plug to a single guitar. I received a 15w Fender Frontman, when I was a young boy and I always wanted to try that, but I only could get two amps wired that way. It would be cool to try that idea on some more.

      The Mustang III and above are great sounding amps. Yeah, if you A/B them with an expensive tube amp they're not going to quite hold up (although the difference in tone is a lot less noticeable than the difference in price), but you can get perfectly good and gig-worthy tones from them.

    I got the Mini 5 based in part on your review and have a major complaint: it's to loud! Well sort of anyway. I also just got a Fender Player Plus Top and coming from a LTD Deluxe into a Yamaha THR10 I am having some serious issues getting tone. My use for these amps is primarily in a semi truck driving state to state. What I am finding is that on the lower wattage settings the harder rock amp models get a muddy sloppy sound but when its on max watts it sounds great, but then it gets to loud for use in a motel room! Seriously, I'm loving this amp and am sure I will get used to it. It is mostly an issue of too many new things going on at once. It is definitely good at getting a blues tone at any of the wattage settings.

      I have one i use for busking the middle power setting i get around 6 hours playing time with 5 cheapo rechargable batteries ! Been playing it like that for tow years, never n issue with thiw amp ! Seems pretty unbreakable, dropped just once from my bicycle it bounced a few times because the strap knobs are plastic, i replaced them with a couple of stainless bolts and a couple of washers and used an old guitar strap and my carrying handle, the one supplied is far too short ! I am getting my best sounds at middle power setting with for me the full 5 watts gets quickly boxey ! But i sometimes wonder if i might swap out the speaker for an quality 8 inch speaker, apparently threre is just the space necessary ! I love my mini 5 . but i am looking at the GO 10 ..... has a looper inbuilt, vocoder effects and an 8inch speaker !!

    I get the feeling that the people that are really surprised about your little jam session, and how focused you get, are either not musicians, or they are musicians that don't get to hang around other musicians much.
    This is how jamming goes, you get caught up. Especially if the people playing are familiar with everyone else's playstyle and timing. I remember my old band, we would improve new songs, testing out riffs, phrases or basic melodies. We were all so familiar with eachother that we could predict pauses from the others, and where each of us would want yo accent something. It made us look like we were well practiced and tight, but this is stuff we would make up on the spot.
    My first band, my dad's band, whom I played with for nearly 20 years, had gotten so familiar that we all had bady language and signals that were undetectable to the audience. Except for when Brinker wasn't paying attention, then Bill's signals would be comically exaggerated trying to get his attention lol

      Is that a "British" word? I live in VA, USA, and I've *never* heard that word before. I had to Google it...

      John T. Campbell Probably. I first heard it from Glen Hansard, who is Irishman. I'm from Riga, Latvia, btw)

      From WA and I hear it all the time. Seattle is pretty known for its abundance of buskers though.

      Brandon It _may_ be because I live in a rural area. I guess when you live in a city you'd see _busking_. That may be why I've never heard it. But, I bet we say things in VA that you don't in WA, and vice versa.

    I love my little vox g3 there are a lot of different hidden features (like volume knob actually working the way a tube power section breaks up ect..) that make it better and if you sit down and really tweak it i can get some spot on tones and for 3 watts it if fricken' loud when cranked. Actually every time i use it I cant believe i only paid 100 bucks for it.

      for beginners I recommend having a lesson in itself from an experienced player to show you what all the effects settings do to your signal. some songs require tap-tempo for instance. notice what compression did for +Rob Chapman!
