Powerful song. Makes me think of my late husband. That lyric that says “the world is a bad place, a terrible place to live but I don’t want to die” always hits hard.
This is the version I grew up with and loved. I did not suspect the other version wasn't the same band, i figured they were just decades older. Bothe were beautiful, but this is the song that ouches my heart. Love it.
I’m a pensioner now and I fondly remember this tragic and beautiful sad song from 1969. This is Marmalades masterpiece. These powerful lyrics ‘The world is bad place, a bad place a terrible place to live’ still resonates today even more so. There is so much evil, wars and hatred in this world and this hauntingly beautiful song is a testament to this fact. Dean Ford, RIP
This is one of those songs that slipped through the cracks over the years. It really needs to be heard more often...and by more people! "We Were Alway Sweethearts" by Boz Skaggs is another one.
one of a handful of songs I consider perfect. Musicianship, Arrangement, lyrics, performance.. especially Dean's vocals. Dean's genius was in knowing Precisely how much vocal to give-- never too much or too little. Perfect.
I first listened to this great song in High School, and while serving with the USMC and in Viet Nam. Thank you Marmalade. Great memories, some NOT so great. You helped a lot of us music lovers over there get thru. Love ya always,
I knew and liked this song as a kid when it came out in late ‘69 or early ‘70. After that, it kind of slipped my mind until mid 2018 when I was diagnosed with incurable multiple myeloma. Over the last 5 1/2 years I have had an inordinate amount of time to think about songs like this. I have learned or come to believe a few things I had not thought about before 2018: - Everybody wants to go to heaven but nobody wants to die. - We hear a lot about dying with no regrets. It seems to me our time is better spent trying to ensure others (family and close friends) do not die with regrets. Thank you, Biz. Great analysis!
Sorry I'm late but I love this song. Marmalade might be called a one hit wonder but in actuality they were a very good band who played together for a very long time. Anyway this was a great song with a lot of meaning behind it.
Have to place this song in context. Vietnam War was raging. RFK and MLK had been assassinated earlier in 1968 and racial strife was ripping us apart. I was 14 years old and this song meant a lot to me.
Big Soul Biz is the Steph Curry, of making 3-pointer song drops...nothing but Net. Keep up the hard work Biz. We all appreciate the songs and most of all your wit, intelligence, and skilled communication skills. You always make us smile and learn at the same time.
They let us hold onto something that only our generation knew. That reaching out and loving each other was what was important in spite of what the world said. And we did!
One of the finest songs ever written, in my opinion. Just fantastic. Came out when I was 6 years old and I have listened to it thousands of times. It never gets old. As we get older, the meaning gets ever more poignant.
The lead singer of that group was Dean another good song he had in 2013 was Glasgow road but you can look them up on TH-cam you'll probably get the story of his life he passed away in 2019 but look them up on TH-cam
Oh my song! Thank you so much for listening to it! This song helped me make it through adolescence.... & a runaway. I came from a large family & being a middle child, you do get overlooked! Love this song! Again thank you so much for this! Happy New Year!
I just watched the other version out of interest and it is Dean Ford (RIP) in it. I'm not sure about the rest of the band but this version is the best and most widely listened to. There is also a stripped back acoustic version released by Dean Ford shortly before he passed away that is worth a listen if you are at a loose end, and it is all the more poignant given he diedshortly after and the line you referenced in your reaction.
Yes. This is the original singer of Marmalade....Dean Ford. Obviously, it's almost 50 years later and the venue wasn't the greatest for sound. The original that you just reviewed is my favorite. But, I believe they're lip synching to the studio recording. So of course, it's going to sound much better. I also believe that Dean Ford, the singer, was ill (Parkinson's disease) at the time of the latter video. He passed away December 31, 2018 at the age of 73. RIP
“The greetings of people in trouble” “All my sorrow, sad tomorrow” “It’s a terrible place, but I don’t want to die” “Take me back to my home” Yeah, sounds like a young soldier in Vietnam hoping to finish his tour and get home in one piece.
Dean Ford, the lead singer here, remade this song as an old man, along with Joe Tansin. One of the simple sounding, yet more complicated things about this original version is that the guitar solo was replayed backwards, then recorded while playing along with the backwards solo. .
Wow! I made fun of this song as a late 60’s teenager! Now I love it! Thanks! You reminded me of how arrogant kids born in the 50’s could be! (remember, this was the age of the Stones, Zeppelin, and the Allman Bros!) Fabulous song! Peace
If you have a chance do a youtube search for "Reflections of My Life, Dean Ford with Joe Tansin". Dean Ford is the singer of Marmalade and co-wrote this song. He re-recorded it with Joe Tansin (singer and guitarist with a band called Badfinger) 46 years after the original release. Very nice redo. Thanks for your reaction to this video.
I was 17'ish when this came out and turning into "adulthood" and this song always reminds me of Lin who lived opposite St Gabriel's church. Salad days.
Powerful song. Makes me think of my late husband. That lyric that says “the world is a bad place, a terrible place to live but I don’t want to die” always hits hard.
i was 12 when i first heard this song and it hit hard then it still does now im 67 a great song sung by a great vocalist a great song .
Thanks for your reaction and thank you playing the whole song❤❤❤
This was the Vietnam war
Check the version of this song by Kevin Rowlands
Man you only just hearing this? One of Scotland's finest bands and what a song. Makes me cry, every time.
Them and AWB
@@kevincummings4120 And the S.A.H.B.
METOO, EVERYTIME. STILL PLAY AND TRIED PERFORMANCE, CANT DO IT...
The 60s were just a magical time for music.
One of the greatest songs ever recorded.
You said it right, probably the best song by one of the best groups ever.
easily .
It is.
This was very popular during the Vietnam war and reflected how many soldiers felt during that time.
This song absolutely chokes me up every time I hear it. Brother, this is the real deal.
Such a great song. I love strapping on my Fender accoustic in the bedroom, and singing this song.
Oooohhhh
You have no idea how profound this song was at the time (so much turmoil). Right there at the top (with "Into The Mystic") of my play list.
This is the version I grew up with and loved. I did not suspect the other version wasn't the same band, i figured they were just decades older. Bothe were beautiful, but this is the song that ouches my heart. Love it.
Man, I haven't heard this song in ages! I remember hearing it on the radio (AM) when I was 6 yrs old...and my older sister probably had the 45 record.
Classic from 1969 a number 1 hit in the UK
What a moving song. I was 14 when this came out. Takes me back!
So was i

Well said, i am 63 and am very sad for the world of today. Where did it all go so wrong😢
Soldiers in Vietnam adopted this song as it spoke of their living hell. Absolute incredible tune.
Powerful. The reverse guitar by, Junior Campbell is awesome. The soul backing vocal and knowing not to put too much in was genius.
Yes! I was scrolling through to see if someone was going to mention this. Great guitar playing. Just a beautiful song.
This is the original. Great song.
This is one of those songs that slipped through the cracks over the years. It really needs to be heard more often...and by more people! "We Were Alway Sweethearts" by Boz Skaggs is another one.
Like so many in the comments section, this was a song of my childhood and it is well remembered for its beautiful presentation.
I think growing up, I used to think this was the Bee Gees. So beautiful.. those harmonies wow! Cant help singing along, right?! 😊
The music is powerful, the bass kicks it, the horns, wow but the lyrics will stop you cold .
Yes, this is the original, and music doesn't get much better than this.
one of a handful of songs I consider perfect. Musicianship, Arrangement, lyrics, performance.. especially Dean's vocals. Dean's genius was in knowing Precisely how much vocal to give-- never too much or too little. Perfect.
What a beautiful song, powerful!
Great sound. Love be the bass
This song is the original and fire,
Powerful!!! Powerful and moving! Spoke volumes back in the day and in light of the war.
I first listened to this great song in High School, and while serving with the USMC and in Viet Nam. Thank you Marmalade. Great memories, some NOT so great. You helped a lot of us music lovers over there get thru. Love ya always,
Huge hit here in the huge little Netherlands 😅
Great stuff, perfect record.
Thanks man.
👍👊😁
A great hit in my childhood years. How time flies. 🎶🎶😘👍
It meant so much back then!
Fantastic song! Thank You for sharing it!

Not a one hit wonder band at all . They had a massive No1 hit in the UK with a song given to them by the Beatles ‘Oh blah di oh blah da’
You get it bro ❤❤❤
Appreciate your objective unbiased approach to your reactions especially those out of your own generation. Great music out there in past generations
Thank you
Have to place this song in context. Vietnam War was raging. RFK and MLK had been assassinated earlier in 1968 and racial strife was ripping us apart. I was 14 years old and this song meant a lot to me.
Loved it then and still love it now just as much class
I've always loved this song and I loved watching you listen to it you were feeling it!

Ditto to that Clifton!✌️💞

Loved this song since 1st hearing it as a kid way back in 69!!
Great reaction, loved your energy for this one of their greatest songs. Pretty sure if I have any say in it they will play this at my funeral.
Essa música é maravilhosa
Oh my song! Thank you so much for listening to it! This song helped

Musica linda perfeita , a mais linda de todas porque era a preferida do meu pai
meu pai que me ensinou a gostar dessa música 😭😭😭😭🇧🇷
Sadly Dean Ford the lead singer died great Scottish group you might like this song from his later years called the Glasgow Road

original, and great!
They ARE the original Marmalade band. This song was play a lot during the Vietnam war
and all the more poignant for it .
the older man in your first reaction is the same man Dean Ford
NICE!
This is the original band, recorded at the Novello Awards In Britain.
Poetic philosophy. One of he very best tunes ever!

Thank you
There is another cover showing the war in Vietnam, and it will make you cry to see those broken young men of many colors.
I love this song but I don't listen to it very often because it takes me places I don't want to go.
Sometimes gloom helps unite- reminds us tomorrow can be a better day if we strive to make it so
Love this. ❤
Songs of yesteryear. 😊
Watching you react to this song is exactly how i react to these old songs!! I sometimes feel it down deep.
“The greetings of people in trouble”
“All my sorrow, sad tomorrow”
“It’s a terrible place, but I don’t want to die”
“Take me back to my home”
Yeah, sounds like a young soldier in Vietnam hoping to finish his tour and get home in one piece.
Great song
That's Junior Campbell on guitar. He and singer Dean Ford co-wrote this song.
The 60's... The decade of the 45. And I had THEM ALL. One of my favorites.
Dean Ford, the lead singer here, remade this song as an old man, along with Joe Tansin. One of the simple sounding, yet more complicated things about this original version is that the guitar solo was replayed backwards, then recorded while playing along with the backwards solo. .
It isn't just the song, but the video created using it as a tribute to those who fought in Vietnam.
Brilliant
My favorite version of this song
Yes Dean Ford was his name that was the lead singer
Some people may think it is my age, but I grew up with this great music and this caliber is just not made any more by anyone.
In the Scottish vernacular, Greeting = crying
Biz wait till you are 20 years older. You will hear this differently.
Your dope !
Thank you
Wow! I made fun of this song as a late 60’s teenager! Now I love it!
Thanks! You reminded me of how arrogant kids born in the 50’s could be! (remember, this was the age of the Stones, Zeppelin, and the Allman Bros!)

Such an intense song....

and it was bloody shameful.
