- This was the moment King Charles received Sir Keir Starmer at Buckingham Palace on Friday.
Sir Keir and his wife, Lady Victoria Starmer, were welcomed following Labour’s historic victory in the general election.
Starmer is the King’s first Labour prime minister, and the first leader he has appointed after an election.

I like how a serious, hard fought election basically culminates in having tea with the King.
I like it less how someone elected has to come and scrape before the monarch like the latter actually earned their position.
I'm inclined to say cut the cord - let the king still pretend to have power while being basically even more useless than he already is.
It's long past time that the monarch was completely disconnected from govmt - it's not their place to have anything to do with our system of govmt, we didn't vote for them.
@@mnomadvfx The King formally holds the executive power in the United Kingdom. He merely delegates the exercise of executive authority in his name, to the prime minister and the cabinet. There is no other constitutional mechanism then for the prime minister to relinquish power (as Rishi Sunak did) or to gain power (as Sir Keir Starner did) except through the King.
The King in the absence of a codified written constitution, is then the embodiment of the constitution itself in the UK. That is why senior political officers, members of Parliament, judges, and menbers of the armed forces are required by law to swear allegiance to the KIng prior to assuming their offices.
@@BucyKalmanbrilliantly stated
The Cabinet is technically a committee of the Monarch's Privy Council (which is why ministers are appointed to the Privy Council upon nomination). And indeed, the PM is not in that position due to that role/title but as First Lord of the Treasury - basically the head of commission which encompasses the ancient Great Officer of State, the Lord High Treasurer - the keeper of the Monarch's money.

It's like this every single election. We vote on a Thursday (7am-10pm), votes are hand counted throughout the night and results are announced as they are decided. The outgoing PM meets up with the king to resign and the incoming PM meets the king to be offered the job.
By the Friday night, all votes are counted, all results are in and everyone has been appointed to their new roles. Business as usual by the Monday.
Why take 3 months to transfer power if it can be done in 3 days?

Awesome
It's really interesting to see how Charles handles the handover compared to The Queen
I visited his private residence last month, for a booked tour around the garden. It was the day after D Day and we're pretty sure he was there for a bit of private time. Lovely staff (we were a small group) but super tight security. An armed (to the teeth..assault weapon and side arm) police officer never took his eyes off us and followed from a discrete distance. Plus we spotted the flag was up.
the flag gave it away, the king was in residence.
❤ congratulations!
This meeting symbolizes a shared commitment to navigating the UK through its current challenges with unity and mutual respect.
Bot comment
It doesn't symbolize anything of that sort. The executive power proceeds from the King. This is a constitutional requirement for the new prime minister to be appointed. Between Rishi's resignation and Sir Keir kissing the King's hand, the United Kingdom had no prime minister and the King exercised the executive power personally.
Unlike the president of the United States, the British PM has no term of office. He remains PM until he tenders his resignation to the King and the King accepts it and, likewise, he only becomes PM when the King invites him to form a government and he accepts it.
There is no "swearing-in" either although. in his official role of First Lord of the Treasury, rather than prime minister per se, the PM is required to take an oath of allegiance to the King and an oath of office in a meeting of the Privy Council. If he is not yet a member of the Privy Council, he must also take the Privy Council oath, but that is not the case of Sir Keir since, as a former lLeader of the Official Opposition, he had already been sworn in before as member of the Privy Council according to tradition.
I believe the Privy Council meeting happened two days after the election, when the other ministers who are also required to take the oaths were sworn in and took possession of their Seals of Office, signifying that they entered into office. The specifc appointments of the prime minister as First Lord of the Treasury and of the Chancellor of the Exchequer as Second Lord of the Treasury are confirmed by Letters Patent of the KIng, as is the appointment of the Attorney General and some other officers.

Quite pleasant.
Wish the new Prime Minister much success! Greetings from Ireland!

No just dumb partisan whining
The King is very adept at putting people at their ease: His Majesty and Sir Keir will have many interesting and illuminating topics to discuss.
Thank you Lord Jesus! Thank you Holy Spirit
Labour (Keir Rodney Starmer) intend to apply a hefty VAT to private schools, this includes by default special educational needs schools so if you have children like we do who go to a private special needs school because have special needs, then you will be demolished by his tax on it, and will have to remove them and home school them. We have tried this week to call local schools to accept them but they have told us they don’t have the facilities to accept them, so Keir Starmer is totally ignorant of our needs as parents, he thinks he is doing it to the ‘posh’ kids but has no idea he is wrecking special needs kids chances. Crushing.
Sen schools may not be under that umbrella so don’t second guess just yet

There something very elegant and powerful about how UK represent power through their traditions and ceremonies. The Prime Minister and the House of Commons represent the people, the King represent divine authority and the House of Lords represent the nobility - all, in theory at least, coming together to make decisions for their nation.
Excellent comment. I agree.
you speak as though having "nobles" is a good thing. LOL
@@herraren9323 it’s not that it’s a good thing as much as the nobility will always exist one form or another. If you look at all the different civilizations of the past and till now, the idea of equality existed but we as humans are innately unequal. That’s what communism was originally about - true equality and the destruction of the elite class, but after doing so their elites became even worse elites.
The reason we have inequality simply is there is always someone else better than you and better than me. Unless our society is a hive mind and no one person can truly excel, nobility and the elite will exist whether we like it or not.
@@XCHDragox115 with respect though, wealth difference doesn't explain why we have to call someone "lord", "lady", and the such. It's unnecessary entitlement and further stratification that might otherwise be done without, and the UK is still behind in that matter.
@@herraren9323 I’m looking beyond wealth difference - there will always be an elite class regardless of how ‘just’ and equal we try to make our society. What I am suggesting is that the UK’s system and order is rooted in tradition and custom and have worked for the centuries leading up to now. There will no doubt be some sort of negative impact from any system. But the fact that UK still remains a wealthy nation and its standard of living still high compared to much of the world without warlords and civil war, I’d say it is a system worth keeping around.
Is it unequal? Yes. Does it cause problems? Yes, which system doesn’t. But is it stable? Also yes.
