Why does my knee replacement make noise?

  • Noises after a total knee replacement are common and often normal. Clicking, popping, and grinding are the three most common noises reported after knee replacement surgery. These noises do not mean there is something wrong.
    These noises often develop around the 6 weeks and 12 week timeframes. I believe this is associated with increases in activity levels.
    The clicking is usually the underside of the knee cap tapping against the femur implant. Grinding is usually the underside of the knee cap grinding or rubbing against the trochlear groove.
    If you are concerned about these noises or these noises are associated with pain please contact your surgeon or physical therapist for a thorough evaluation.

    Ok Tony, its 3 mths after tkr, im improving but have considerable pain when benfing knee. Also very painful popping noises as she bends knee. My surgeon keeps telling everything looks great, give it time and continue pt. But doggone im doing every thing thats requested of me and still the pain.

    Thank you so much for talking about this. My clicking didn’t start until close to one year mark. My surgeon checked it out in terms of the rotation stuff they do. He said the implant was fine and even took x-rays. For me it is especially concerning lying in bed on my side and moving my legs. It actually has a weird pain sensation along with the noise that is quite annoying. If I slide my leg across the bed it can click/pop each time.
    It is helpful to know the implant is fine and understand what is happening.

    Tony I’m 5 months out from LTKR and trying to find exercises to build my quads which are pretty much non existent. My right knee also needs replaced and just won’t tolerate squats. Being able to strengthen my quads is going to play a big part in when I choose to get the right one replaced.

    Toni, I asked this question on another video last week but got no reply. I am 16 mos post-op TKR. In the last couple weeks, my TKR is making a crunching sound that I can literally hear and feel. It only happens when I am rising from a lower seating position like from an older style commode.

    64 yo female, 5 months from a TKR. Having a resurge of kneecap heat. Have not had the ‘hot knee’ for a couple weeks, but now it’s back. Should I be concerned? Other than that, still lots of pain and stiffness, esp in the mornings and after prolonged sitting.

    TKR in Feb, now it's the end of April. I have noticed noise in my knee. It sounds like Click Click or Click Click Click when I walk. Noticed it on and off when I was still doing PT. I was told it would go away. The next doctor visit is 2 months away. Should I be concerned enough about the noise to get in to see the doctor earlier? Or is this something I have to live with? My other knee will be done later in the summer. I can only imagine the noise from both knees would drive me crazy! Thanks

    What kind of Physical Therapy do you recommend for someone who is having the spacer removed and putting in a solid rod from the femur to the Tibia and having that there to keep your knee straight for about 3 months. Before replacing the prosthesis again?

    Mine is clunking (not clicking) when I walk. Specifically, when my knee is bent and pushing off with the balls of my foot and swinging forward.Not sure if its audible, but definitely feel it! I wouldn't say its painful, but its uncomfortable enough for me to avoid it.

    • @dr.paulj.watson4582
      @dr.paulj.watson4582 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine too, 11 months out of surgery. A tight fabric brace reduces the clunking. All kinds of motion causes the clunking. The clunking does not hurt, but my knee is more swollen than I think it should be at this point. My surgeon says he thinks he put in a spacer that is too thin. He wants to operate again and put in a thicker spacer. I’m terrified. Comments welcome!! 🙏

    • @Zornlover
      @Zornlover ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dr.paulj.watson4582 my surgeon says its clunking now because the swelling has gone down and now my muscles and ligaments need to tighten up. He suggested the gym. Specifically hamstring and quad machines there. I hope you don't have to go back in, but at least there will be no bone cutting if you do.

    The Key word for my Full Knee replacement is Clicking and/or Tapping..It was prominent from 4 to 6 months..At 8 months I ...the only time I feel/hear a Clicking sound is when I bend my leg to place my shoe 👞 on..( It clicks only once)..The Clicking was always an annoyance...never painful.

    I am developing what we think is scar tissue on the top of the knee cap about 1in to 1 1/2 above knee cap on tendon
    I’m post op Oct 6th and I’m doing well from what they PT tells me, we can’t figure out why I’m getting clicking when I do slides laying on the table an sliding me knee, have you heard of this with your patient.
    Thanks bill
    Any input would be great

    • @totaltherapysolutions
      @totaltherapysolutions  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When you are laying flat and your knee is straight the knee cap is floating above the femur. As you start to flex your knee and slide your foot toward your body the knee cap may be tapping against the bottom of the femur as the quad tendon tightens.
      Does it cause pain? It isn't uncommon and should continue to improve. 10/6 surgery puts you around 9-10 weeks post op. I think you will turn another milestone around the 12 week mark.
      Keep me posted.

I've had 22pt treatments and I walk 2miles a day and do in home exercises. I still can't squat and stay in constant pain. My knees make popping sound all the time. I feel something is just not right. I am having trouble with pain in my butt the same side as my total knee replacement. This was a revision from a partial on the inside portion of my knee. This happened also with both my previous partial and TKR but early in the healing process. This time it started at week 8 but I felt twinges on some days. I have been on gabapentin which helped I think prevented the problem but have been trying to wean off this drug. Any suggestions?

      Is it sciatica? I know it isn't uncommon for patients to develop sciatica on the same side as the knee replacement. It is usually attributed to sitting more than you are accustomed to, or walking/moving differently.

    Toni I had my TRKR 20 months ago and I'm having loud clicking sound and grinding on my left side of the knee and feel like my transplant is rubbing against my knee cap which is causing some pain. This happens when I'm sitting or lying and I change position. My OS took xray and said that the surface of my knee cap is rough but he didn't tell me about any treatment. He just told me to do some exercises to strengthen my quad. My TLNR was done 10 months ago and this knee is great. I need ur advice and treatment suggestions.

      Hi... I'm 10 months post op. I hear and feel more of a thud type sound almost every time I bend my leg (aside from the patella tap). I'm guessing it's the plastics hitting. I feel like the joint is very loose, to the point that I have to lock my leg or it will buckle. I also have sciatica really bad.... can both be factors in the buckling? Thanks, in advance!
