- Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo is bringing warmth and comfort this holiday season with a new album called Winter Songs. Available here: decca.lnk.to/wintersongsID
Combining choir, piano and strings, this album reimagines beloved carols, alongside brand new compositions which evoke the spirit of winter. Christmas favourites such as ‘The First Nowell’, ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ and ‘Silent Night’ alternating with beautiful Gjeilo works such as ‘The Rose’ and ‘Ecce Novum’ - balancing the new and the familiar in perfect harmony.
Ola Gjeilo says: “I’ve always wanted to do a Christmas album and I’m so excited to get to share these winter-inspired tracks, 15 collaborations with the amazing Choir of Royal Holloway and 12 Ensemble.”
The new recording features Ola Gjeilo on piano, the Choir of Royal Holloway, and 12 Ensemble - a collection of London’s finest and most exciting chamber musicians. The conductor is Rupert Gough, Director of Choral Music and College Organist at Royal Holloway since 2005.

This piece is still hard for me to listen to. I played it to my beloved grandmother close bevore Chistmas 2019 in hostpital. She was suffering from cancer and knew that it would be her last days. That kind of music gave her joy in life and she cried. At 1.1.2020 morning at 9 o'clock she passed away. The music is so beautiful but still reminds me of those days. Rest in peace beloved grandmother and grandfather who passed in 2003. We all love you until the end and on and on....
I need to have my handkies by my side when I listen to Ola's music, it's painfully beautiful. A gift for a wounded planet, especially at the moment.

As a music major I have heard a lot of music but I just want to say that this piece of music has change my perspective of many things. It brought up a new respect for how music can make me feel and it was a whole new emotion throughout the song when a piece of music can change someone’s emotions and perspective of things that’s how you know it’s a good one

This piece is one of my favorites of his. Late nights I'll say, "Alexa, play music by Ola Gjeilo," and it helps me find that connection to what really matters. The more secular classical music just doesn't cut it sometimes.
This piece feels to me like coming home after a long journey abroad. A sigh of happiness. Only other piece I have like that is Pachelbel's canon. Thank you all so much for presenting us this fine music!

What happens at 48 seconds in? It's like there's this divine soprano or something that slips right into the chord, in perfection. Not a sound wave out of sync. Was that an overtone, or a justly tuned chord? What's going on there, Ola? I have to know!

I’m singing this as a tenor in my choir and the mix of using head and falsetto is beautiful although the only reason i’m in falsetto is a purer soft sound without going flat and the rest of my section is in falsetto so i don’t have a choice although the falsetto in some sections brings out the beauty of the piece and i love it
