I was the guy wearing a Nirvana T-shirt to a GnR show in ‘93.. never did get to a Foo show, but I did check Them Crooked Vultures. Only time I ever layed eyes on our man Dave.
It is interesting how Dave Grohl always puts himself out of any situation, but every nirvana interview he was always one of the biggest shit talkers. Even at the MTV awards he was the one that picked up the microphone and started mocking Axl rose.
You know? Nirvan was my favorite band back in high school. I had the same blue hat with the yellow Nirvana that Axl used to wear. I was at an age where, when Guns n Roses biggest accomplishment (AFD) had already reached it's peak, I guess I thought of Guns as being an older band and I was trying to get into the modern music. The "Grunge" music.Though, some of the timeless songs (Paradise City, Welcome To The Jungle, and Sweet Child Of Mine) were still playing on the radio occasionally. And I liked them. It's funny that you don't realize you LOVED a song/band until 30 years later. Then, they came out with "Use You're Illusion" and it had a few gems on it (November Rain, Don't Cry, and Knockin On Heaven's Door). So they were always there in the background. They'd already accomplished stardom, so to me they just seemed not like, "Oldies", but what we now call "classic rock" I wasn't as into them as much as I was with Nirvana. I graduated in 96'. So, hopefully some people reading that are 41 also will know what I'm talking about. You CAN be a fan of more than one band. it isn't the NFL. Music isn't about who's better. Now when I hear the opening riff to to "Sweet Child O' Mine", I stop dead in my tracks and just.....enjoy. Same feeling when I hear Kurt (RIP) screaming, "...With the lights out, it's less dangerous ! Here we are now, entertain us!". Why does it make me feel guilty? It really shouldn't. I wanna point out that both Kurt and Axl BOTH were pioneers and paved the way for a lot of other bands. So if this makes me "Fuckin' Crazy", then....."All Apologies"!
@@kidpoker9408 You know? You're right. November Rain and Don't Cry are HORRIBLE songs. Thank you for pointing that out. And, now my favorite Nirvana song is Beeswax instead of that TERRIBLE Teen Spirit. (It's actually Smells Like Teen Spirit, but who cares? It sucks right?)

Similar story for me, I was introduced to GNR back in 89. Initially didn't like what I heard but like all really great music it gets at you slowly and once it has you, your hooked forever. I never looked at them as glam rockers at all at the time. To me this was different something much deeper and less mainstream which I guess was a reason for my early resistance. Thats why when nirvana came along it was like a natural fit and from a distance as a kid I didn't see a lot of difference in them. There has to me always been people who won't listen to something because it's not cool, too popular or mainstream. They think they are cool and individual but really they are just sheep in a different paddock.
To me rock music is music we all had good and bad music we had fights and memories. They still both made great music. It doesn't matter if they hated each other. They were both AMAZING bands!
Kurt criticized everything, Axl was furious at everything. Nirvana wasn't very educated on GNR sadly, they didn't recognized how rebellious Guns was to the scene. In fact GNR gave the industry more trouble than Nirvana, it's common knowledge the label could barely control Axl. Also worth noting both bands were on that same label.
Pro tip: Anything with text on it should probably be entirely visible, or scrolled left to right. Not right to left. You know, because that's the way we read...and stuff.
GnR, Nirvana and Foo Fighters have all played a massive role in advancing rock music. The issue might be whether or not it advanced to good place. Don't get me wrong, there are still some good bands rockin out today but it seems like the "heyday" of rock has passed us by. I can only hope and pray for a resurgence to counter the constant autotuned assault on our ears that is known as today's music.
You’re referring to pop music as “today’s music” as though it’s all there is, but most good music doesn’t make it to pop radio and nobody with actual taste in music should rely on pop culture to provide good new music. A lot of people act like there’s no good music anymore when the truth is that their favorite stuff isn’t on the radio and you have to actually search for things you like. Complaining about pop music just means your musical horizon isn’t very broad and you expect others to figure out your taste for you.

pretty amazing gift from Axl to Grohl.. Trying to find an ES-335 with dot inlays from that era is no easy task... The few that are out there & available with block inlays are between $17-$18K, so can only imagine what the rare bird cost Axl... not that it put a dent in his accumulated wealth.
To answer the question at the end of the video I’m a fan of both GnR and Nirvana. As a kid the only tapes I had besides all the Metallica albums were Use Your Illusion 2 and Nevermind. 1991 & 1992 were the best years for music imo.
I was there too! and then I was at the Foo concert the next night. I have been to a lot of concerts but those were the 2 best shows I have ever been to.
People grow up, it's all water under the bridge now. Krist and Duff are friends now. Who knows if Kurt was still alive he might not care anymore either, who knows? The drama happened almost 30 years ago, if you're going to keep a grudge that long for something so stupid, you're a sad person
I love both bands so much. GnR and Nirvana will 4ever be on my playlists. Personally, i listened to nirvana before i ever listened to GnR, but after finally listening to GnR's appetite for destruction and use you illusions 1 and 2 i fell in love with GnR alot more than Nirvana. I love in utero and Nevermind too but i find myself lidtening to more of the powerful classic rock GnR has! Still luv them all \m/
SN2903 definitely hair. They only changed their look and sound once “grunge” music exploded. Can’t really blame em .. all the 80 bands were doing it. Bon Jovi and axl were the worst.
Always been a fan of FF and never cared much for “ Guns “, but I’m amazed to discover that Axl had class enough to give Dave that Gibson and he would end up using on Concrete and Gold. What a story. Dave is definitely a class act. Im just shocked to see it coming from Axl. I Guess there wasn’t as much hatred between bands as we were once led to believe .
It’s pretty simple. Most of the issue was that Kurt didn’t like what Axl stood for. Axl was originally a fan of nirvana, he just started reciprocating eventually. Dave is kind of a fence sitter, so without Kurt there to get him to take a stance, he folded. “a fucking sexist and a racist and a homophobe, and you can’t be on his side and be on our side. I’m sorry that I have to divide this up like this, but it’s something you can’t ignore. And besides they can’t write good music.”- Kurt
Love the Foos and Slash. GNR I really love GNR "Appetite for Destruction". I'm glad to see Dave Grohl and GNR have mended the bridges and can be apart of good Rock N Roll for the next 25 years!
Hate is too harsh a word, when nirvana came along there where the youth of there time and they just didn't take anyone around them seriously! Kurt had that fiery passion of a pissed off teenage punk with rebellion in his soul, who wanted nothing more but to trail a fucking blaze. And he did!
@@rerelie1242 I was gonna say the same thing. His playing was far below average. I never got the Nirvana craze anyway. Kurt was a heroin junkie not a musician. So many of his lyrics make no sense

It's interesting how GnR escaped the hair metal extinction event known as Grunge. I guess they were kind of in their own category, hard rock American band.
Appetite for Destruction, Lies, Use Your Illusion and Live Era are greater than the entirety of Foo Fighters’ back catalogue. Foo Fighters, The Colour and the Shape and There is Nothing Left to Lose are the very best records Foo Fighters have to offer. One by One is hit and miss, then they jumped the shark with In Your Honour. Got a lot of love for both bands, but they are sadly well past their best (in my opinion). Same for RHCP (my freaks for life) though John Frusciante could have a change of heart at any point and his return would likely redeem them entirely. ✌🏻❤️🤘🏻
I blame the feud on Kurt. I like both bands but let's be serious, GN'R mop the floor with Nirvana. Also, today (April 5, 2019) is the 25th Anniversary of Kurt's death.
After a Strat, the ES335s are my favorite guitars. I've been repairing guitars for almost 20 years and have been fortunate to have held and played 50s and 60s Stats, Les Pauls, 335s…all the greats. Players and guitar geeks are always talking about how great the 50s Les Paul bursts sound and play, and how you can't reproduce their tone with a new guitar, justifiably. But you don't hear about how unique the vintage ES335s sound when compared with later ones , and the differences are MUCH more noticeable, due to the semi-acoustic construction. The same thing goes for the talk about the original PAFs from the late 50s, and while they do sound great in Les Pauls, they truly sound like they were specifically intended for the 335; running through a slightly pushed JTM 45, or a Tweed…🤤 Someone giving you an early 60s ES335 as a thank you is insane. They are IMO the best playing years.
Angry Anderson even said Axl would be playing his piano and singing at parties.. swooning and crooning the groupie sluts. He never actually said it straight out but it certainly sounded like Angry thought Axl was a poser. It definitely wasn't just Kurt who had problems with the guy....they (Nirvana and Gn'R) were just 2 of the most popular bands at the time so their fueds and digs at each other got more noticed.
Axl promoted the very unhealthy idea of being an abusive macho rockstar. The idea that it was ok to treat women like shit or refuse to play for your own fans. That was enough a reason to hate him.
I was at the NO on 9 show just a few nights after the VMAs and Kurt and Krist told the whole story to the crowd. They seemed sort of proud of the fact that they had picked a fight with Axl. A G&R fan from the crowd was shouting something at Kurt, so Kurt had him brought up on stage and gave him the mic. The guy said something like everyone should just get along and rock out. Kurt was nice to the guy, but after he left the stage Kurt said "It's true we should all just love one another. Kris? I love you." and then Kurt and Kris sarcastically kissed. It was super awkward but pretty funny, I thought. Also it was a LBGT benefit show basically, and it fit the theme of the whole night (BTW Jello Biafra Rant FTW), so somehow it was poignant and showed that Kurt could be pretty unshy on stage. But the reality of it all was that the guy from the crowd was right. Axl may have represented the worst things about hair metal to all of us wannabe punk rock dorks that day, and he probably deserved to be made fun of just because he was a reported misogynist, and I may have made fun of "welcome to the jungle" almost everyday of my teenage life, but the rest of the hairband guys were no different than us. Just a bunch of angsty drugged up drunk arrogant kids, rocking out to sabbath, trying to get laid. Anyways if you want to hear the version Kurt told that night, just find the bootleg of that show on youtube, and look for: 1:06:22 Kurt and Krist talks about the previous day at MTV Music Awards 1:08:34 "Say it brother" 1:10:07 Kurt and Krist kiss Sorry for the length of this but I just hope people who are just here for the "Tea" might see this and understand that the Nirvana vs G&R drama was funny but useless. I'm with Dave on this one. Slash and Duff, those guys are very talented.
Izzy Stradlin was a great part of Gn'R aswell but Duff and Slash were definitely the major success of the band. My idolisation of Slash had me teaching myself guitar at a young age and by 11-12, I knew every song off Appetite for Destruction on my guitar spot on. Well....dad taught me around 5 but Slash got me interested in heavier riffs👌🏻.
@@midasiscariot well that's the problem with labels I'm sorry if I offended and I agree with you but I am not the first person to call them hair metal.
@@midasiscariot well that's interesting I guess I mean you could say a lot of bands that are called metal are really just rock and roll bands but when GNR first came out everyone including me put them in a category which was basically a metal band from LA with big hair. Now later on you might be like well they didn't even have big hair but look at the first few videos that came out that were played on MTV and honestly they look a lot like Motley snake (hairspray confirmed). Now remember also that there was about 200 bands on MTV at the time who you all look the same and basically play the same sort of music and almost all of them were from LA and almost all of them had big hair so the term hair metal was born but yeah I would say most of those bands weren't really metal as we Define it today. I think this is very similar actually 2 calling every Seattle band grunge. Being somebody from the Northwest I can tell you that not a single person that played in a band in Seattle wanted to be called a grunge band but it happened. GNR is a great bunch of musicians who played a unique style of rock and roll that still if you hear even 12 seconds of a song you know it's them. So to categorize them based on their first few videos is just a terrible idea and so my 18 year old self apologizes for for making fun of them based on how they look, it has nothing to do with the music they made and the fact that people loved their songs. Again what I'm trying to say is there is no genres in my mind anymore it's just good music and bad music. I think Kurt would have come to that conclusion sometime in his life if he would have had time to grow older and wiser. IMHO Kurt and Axl had more in common then they realized and they probably should have been friends. If the stories I've heard are true then the most of that is Kurt's fault because he tried so hard to remain an outsider even when he was basically the most popular kid in the country. But to be fair Axel wasn't the most likeable guy in the world back then, the spousal abuse,, the lyrics to one in a million,, etc.. even people in his own band didn't like him enough to stick around right? PS slash is one of my fav guitar players ever, I think he's a genius, right up there with page, beck, and clapton. Also I was terribly saddened when Izzy left the band because I think his songwriting was also genius, sensible combination of many styles and influences similar to mine.
I remember all of it. Both bands were great and still are....But I will say after Kurts death I can’t listen to Nirvana anymore it’s just way to depressing...To me nirvana was just a vehicle for kurt to publicly display his demons. A real drag that he’s gone...The seeds of dysfunction from childhood can can become our reaper as adults. Miss ya Kurt....By the way Your daughter has grown now and I see you in her.
I used to not like Dave grohl but after nirvana, I started liking him more, now I’m so jealous that everything he does turns to gold. I’ve been a GNR fan for 30 years now.
I love Nirvana's music, but as a person, Kurt never impressed me. Look, he was a depressive guy with this huge chip on his shoulder and who felt it was part of his personality to not only shun "fame", but make sure everyone knew how much he despised it. Yeah, ok, whatever, you do you. Axl's no sweetheart either but, if I had to bet, this was more Kurt's fault (with his trusty sidekick/trashhole Courtney) than anyone else. Just my feeling, I could be wrong.
Kurt mocked Axl by saying "Hey Axl wanna be godfather to my daughter? Jokingly.. that's stuff you just don't do. I Thought it was in poor taste, granted its the past but Duff took it personally & went after Krist at the MTV awards if my knowledge is correct. Duff being from Seattle got defensive for his fellow band mate even though he knew Kurt & Krist from the Punk days in the 80s in Seattle.. it's a sad day today, Layne & Kurt were lost on this day years apart.. Yesterday I listened to Chinese Democracy from start to finish & still love it!! Since today is Layne & Kurt's anniversary, play AIC & Some Nirvana (I'm not a big Nirvana fan at all) They definitely changed the musical landscape of Rock n roll just like GN'R, AIC, & all the great bands that came before. Another great video guys!!!
Yeah..it was definitely Courtney that yelled out the Godfather shit. As I said above, Axl had every right to go off over it considering what he and his wife were going through. It was a shit move on Love's part as she wouldn't give a fuck about Axl's situation...c@#t of a move on her part actually
Kurt was repulsed by fame, he didn’t care about pleasing the fans. I don’t think Dave wanted fans necessarily, he didn’t NEED fame, but he appreciates his fan base and does want to please them.
It's such total bollocks. Kurt loved the idea of being a rockstar. He clearly spent years growing up, dreaming about being the new Robert Plant. If he didn't want fame, why did he bother? God, you dimwits are so naive.
"YOU GET NOTHING FOR NOTHING IF THAT'S WHAT YOU DO/ TURN AROUND BITCH I GOT A USE FOR YOU/ BESIDES... YOU AIN'T GOT NOTHING BETTER TO DO/ AND I'M BORED." That is the song DAVE managed to proudly and loudly perform with his gunners idols. It figures. No further, Your Honor ;)
Kurt didn't hate Axl. I watched a documentary made by BBC when I lived in England years ago and they interviewed Kurt's ex. She said he was obsessed with Appetite. I think Kurt resented how big they became because he was a prototype hipster. And he was probably conflicted over it - he probably liked Appetite before GnR got big and then hated them because of how big they got, because they were an easy target.
Dave Grohl can be hypocrital at times on numerous levels, and you obviously didn't research this in an unbiased manner. Do a search for audio tapes that exist of words exchanged between the men themselves when cameras weren't present and recorded label reprentation would find it hard to push any legalities on public liable, slander or defamation of any sort. Both were misquoted in the media by representation since they had to share a label. If you listen the men, from their own mouths, it was regarding opposing views and actions regarding women, homophibua and abuse. A direct threat was even made on one occession. That's all for people to hear. As I said, please research it and add the audio as an addendum if you want to be impartial in the name of music history. I don't have a TH-cam channel, so I have no agenda. I'm not trying to direct your subscribers attention to anyone else's videos. I'm simply referring you to facts as opposed to heresy. Also, one has a documented history of domestic violence. The other was charged with it, but the charges were dropped when the supposed victim admitted to self-inflicted wounds and actually getting physical with him instead. He didn't hurt her in return. There are police reports to back that up as well. I'm not stating names here to be as impartial as possible because music study is a very interesting thing. If you want to present factual content, however, it would be wise to fact check yourself without prejudice. All the best to you...
I’m a fan of music. Faith No More, Beastie Boys, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, GNR, Jimi Hendrix, Cypress Hill, Van Morrison, The Doors, Mr Bungle, Prince, EverClear, Los Lobos, Blondie, I mean if I like it I listen to it.
GNR is my favorite band of all time but I respect Kurt's reasons for not wanting to work with Axl. He was a piece of shit but hes mellowed quite a bit now that hes in his late 50s.
It's really sad that they never got to patch things up. I always wonder what would've happened if Kurt didn't die. Would Nirvana be as legendary as they are now? Would Nirvana easily become a parody of themselves on their 4th album? Would Kurt have gotten addicted to a really bad substance, and OD'd? Would Kurt and Courtney have split up after awhile? Would Nirvana still be around if he didn't die? Would him and Axl have started throwing insults through the press in the present day, or would Kurt have calmed way down with everyone else?
No way anymore. Kurt cut off Axl's fan feeling for him. He should have been proud that Axl was his number one fan, but he got it very very wrong. Axl is human, he was hurt, so he fought back.
@@jeanaflorcollantes3473 Oh, Axl had every reason to fight back. Kurt was hurling cruel insults and making harsh accusations and labels of a wounded man, acting like he knew Axl, but didn't. At that point, I would've threatened to take Kurt to the pavement in front of his wife and infant daughter, too.
Kurt was already broken up with Courtney. He informed his attorney on March 1, 1994, less than a month before his death, that he wished to divorce and amend his will. Kurt had completely severed all contact with Courtney after his stay in Rome
I like both bands. Besides some politicians, I don't slag specific people anyway, never have, but there's no way I could slag someone who is helping me out by saying nice stuff about me, regardless of my personal feelings about them as a person or artist.
Exactly...
I was just thinking about the mtv music awards, "Hey Axel, hey asshole"
Same feeling when I hear Kurt (RIP) screaming, "...With the lights out, it's less dangerous
! Here we are now, entertain us!". Why does it make me feel guilty? It really shouldn't. I wanna point out that both Kurt and Axl BOTH were pioneers and paved the way for a lot of other bands. So if this makes me "Fuckin' Crazy", then....."All Apologies"!
november rain dont cry gems let me guess your fav nirvana song is teen spirit
@@kidpoker9408 You know? You're right. November Rain and Don't Cry are HORRIBLE songs. Thank you for pointing that out. And, now my favorite Nirvana song is Beeswax instead of that TERRIBLE Teen Spirit. (It's actually Smells Like Teen Spirit, but who cares? It sucks right?)
@@kidpoker9408 as you get older ( yes it does happen) you realise you can like all a groups songs, not just ones that have less airplay , a fan doesn't have to justify their favourite songs , that is personal taste . Don't worry most people grow out of this narrow view and just enjoy the music . I like more popular songs and lesser known , that is a fan !
@@kidpoker9408 love november rain haha what the big deal, also like civil war and patience. Aneurysm and scentless apprentice prob my fav nirvana songs.
I listen to both GNR and Foo Fighters. I actually listened to GNR and Nirvana in high school and Foo Fighters and GNR in college.
Hi Axole lol. I always loved all these bands. Nirvana, Guns and Roses and now Foo Fighters.

I love music and think GnR sucks shit.
@@Guitarisforgrins nah.. i think nirvana is suck shit
Dave is a real down to earth guy and he was like that when he was in Nirvana. Always fascinating to hear him tell stories of the past.

Drew Cook I agree, but I’m not sure I like where the Foo’s took it though. It seems pussified by Pop music compared to GNR & Nirvana.
Amen...

Guns and Roses are fucking awesome. I used to hate their sound but it grew better with time.
To answer the question at the end of the video I’m a fan of both GnR and Nirvana. As a kid the only tapes I had besides all the Metallica albums were Use Your Illusion 2 and Nevermind. 1991 & 1992 were the best years for music imo.

I blame the feud on Kurt.
I like both bands but let's be serious, GN'R mop the floor with Nirvana.
Also, today (April 5, 2019) is the 25th Anniversary of Kurt's death.
As a Kurt fan, I agree. Cobain was being a douche to Axl. He didn't deserve the hate he got from Kurt.
Rip Kurt
Kurt didn’t like Guns ‘N Roses because Axl rose was making misogynist/sexist statements and he didn’t want to be associated with that.
Kurt was a SJW/male feminist. The boy had issues!
The same thing goes for the talk about the original PAFs from the late 50s, and while they do sound great in Les Pauls, they truly sound like they were specifically intended for the 335; running through a slightly pushed JTM 45, or a Tweed…🤤
Someone giving you an early 60s ES335 as a thank you is insane. They are IMO the best playing years.
Kurt completely misunderstood Guns N Roses, it's because he was surrounded by punk elitists unfortunately
The People around where just a bunch of feminists
And Courtney😣
Guns and roses were a bunch of rock jock douchebags
Anyways if you want to hear the version Kurt told that night, just find the bootleg of that show on youtube, and look for:
1:06:22 Kurt and Krist talks about the previous day at MTV Music Awards
1:08:34 "Say it brother"

Sorry for the length of this but I just hope people who are just here for the "Tea" might see this and understand that the Nirvana vs G&R drama was funny but useless.
Very interesting info, but labelling GnR as "hair metal" is just plain stupid.
@@midasiscariot well that's the problem with labels I'm sorry if I offended and I agree with you but I am not the first person to call them hair metal.
@@lightninghopkins4014 No need to apolgize. They're just not even a metal band.
And Frances older than Kurt now.
Nonsense. Nirvana's music was more than just that.
Nah man Kurt didn't like him because Axel beat up his girlfriend. Can't fault him for that.
Kurt seemed like a real nice bloke. Maybe a bit too nice.
Kurt mocked Axl by saying "Hey Axl wanna be godfather to my daughter? Jokingly.. that's stuff you just don't do. The truth is Courtney said those that things about "hey axl do you wanna be the godfather to our daughter?" . So Courtney made it first.
Duff has admitted to knowing Chris Cornell and Kim thadyil from Soundgarden, he didn’t know Kurt or kris!!

Kurt didn't hate Axl. I watched a documentary made by BBC when I lived in England years ago and they interviewed Kurt's ex. She said he was obsessed with Appetite.

I never knew he was a heroin addict. I knew he was a pot smoker.
No way anymore. Kurt cut off Axl's fan feeling for him. He should have been proud that Axl was his number one fan, but he got it very very wrong. Axl is human, he was hurt, so he fought back.

Kurt was already broken up with Courtney. He informed his attorney on March 1, 1994, less than a month before his death, that he wished to divorce and amend his will. Kurt had completely severed all contact with Courtney after his stay in Rome
Kurt would probably have died of a heroin overdose. Sadly.
