- The city of Nottingham is located within the East Midlands county of Nottinghamshire.
The Normans built a motte-and-bailey castle in Nottingham in 1068, which was later replaced by a stronger stone castle in the 12th century. During the Crusades, Prince John and his supporters, including the Sheriff of Nottingham, occupied the castle in order to usurp the throne from Richard I (The Lionheart) whilst he was away. According to the legend, Robin Hood was loyal to Richard, this being the origin of his alleged feud between Prince John (later King John) and the Sheriff of Nottingham.
Nottingham Castle had been a royal residence until around 1600. In 1651 at the end of the English Civil War, the castle was partially destroyed by gunpowder to prevent it from being used as a Royalist fortification.
Nottingham prospered during the Industrial Revolution, largely due to its textile production - lace in particular. The city is the birthplace of the Raleigh Bicycle Company, whilst the nearby town of Beeston is the origin of Boots, the high street pharmacy/health & beauty chain.
Nottingham has a rich sporting heritage, being home to two football clubs: Notts County and Nottingham Forest. Notts County are the oldest professional football club in the world, having been founded in 1862. Nottingham Forest were once the greatest club in Europe, hitting their zenith between 1979 and 1980 when they won back-to-back European Cups under manager Brian Clough, a statue of whom can be seen in the video on King Street. The two clubs play directly opposite each other geographically on either side of the River Trent. Also, Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club play just down the road from Nottingham Forest at Trent Bridge.
The Nottingham Express Transit opened in 2004, allowing commuters to travel through the city via tram. There had been a prior tramline in the city which ran from 1901 to 1936.
