    • @GeoffreyToday
      @GeoffreyToday 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't remember which version I'm afraid. It was definitely one of the original ones as it didn't have a gold head. I think I was about 8 or 9 years old, so it would have been around 87 or 88. It's hard to remember though, maybe it was 89 or even 90.
      As a super original kid I went with the call sign Maverick :p

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's just so cool that you had one! I'll bet not too many kids chose the code name "Goose."

      +HoodedCobraCommander788 I remember being so excited when it finally arrived. I really like the Sharc as a vehicle, so he spent a lot of time flying that around (oddly I used the Sharc almost exclusively as an air vehicle instead of a submersible). when not piloting the Sharc his preferred mode of transportation was the RAM motorcycle, which looked better with his colour scheme. if I had it to do over today, I'm not sure what I'd name him... maybe something like Blitz or Hard Case, trying to come up with a cool, unused Joe name is rough.

    • @HCC788
      @HCC788  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I hadn't thought of Steel Brigade on the RAM, but that would work well.

    Great review. I didn't know there were variants. Mine is 1D. He was always my favorite figure and went on all the missions. You'd think with modern technology there would be a Hasbro website where you could fill out a custom profile card and make pick through specific parts to create your own. Here's my combat command file card:
    Codename: Ramkick (Marines)
    Primary Military Specialty: Special Forces
    Secondary Military Specialty: Computers
    Weapons Specialty: M-7 Flamethrower, M-32 Pulverizer
    Martial Arts Expert: Tae Kwan Do, Kung Fu, Karate
    School Training: Special Forces School, Ranger School, Desert Training
    (Mine is signed)
    Traits
    Extremely self reliant, Ramkick spends a lot of time alone. His mind is always at work though, as he contemplates his next strategic move. He has high expectations and aims to fulfill them.
    Abilities
    Ramkick's spirit and intense energy level motivate the rest of the team. When battle erupts, Ramkick is always at the front of the line, ready for whatever is necessary to defend and protect his country.
    Personality
    Ramkick's honesty and loyalty are just two of the qualities that make him MVP in any platoon. He is not only there to share in the triumphs, but also to help his fellow comrades trough intense combat situations.

    I suspect most of the cost for these came from the fact that they had additional labor costs to process all the "personalized" filecards (or more accurately, file paperwork). Somebody had to open all those order forms, read what the kids wanted and do the data entry.

    Steel Brigade's only comic book appearance besides the mail order in the Marvel Comics was on the cover of Devil Due's GI Joe #25 during the World War 3 storyline where he and every member of GI Joe were standing in front of I believe the Capitol Building or Lincoln Memorial

    Quick question. By the way this was a great review. Now for my question. If the Steel Brigade were army builder troops then in theory an individual would have to order more than one and come up with different names, code names and military specialties for each one right?

    When I found out there were variants, I instantly imagines them as a spec ops team. Since Super Trooper was a mail away too, why not make them HIS spec Ops team? STRYDENT has mentioned the Pit Troopers possible roll as bodyguards for the higher Joe Brass like Hawk, Keep Haul, FLAGG, etc.

    Sit back all, and let me tell you a story. Whether you believe it or not, is up to you. There is really no way I can prove this tale anymore, as I do not know if I even have the letter from Hasbro (possibly my mother might, as she did collect a lot of our works and letters as kids). I can't recall if it was late 1986 or early 1987, but my brother, Eric, and I thought it would be a good idea to write a letter to Hasbro and give them an idea to make an option for kids to design their own G.I. Joe.
    I was 11/12 and Eric was 10. We drew out all the info for them. As we were fans of Snake Eyes, the character did look like Steel Brigade, but was more dark. We did tell them to keep a helmet on, to not show whether it was a boy or girl. We also said to use baggy clothes for the same reason. We asked to allow kids to choose what weapons they wanted, what branch of military, even allow for their own codename. We then mailed it in. We lived in the middle of the woods, northern Wisconsin, and we did not have anything like a copier or fax machine back then. We just mailed them the original copies.
    Interestingly enough, we DID get a letter back from them, more or less saying "Thank you for the idea or works, but they already had people in their company who makes up these creations" [paraphrasing]. My brother and I were slightly distraught, but shrugged it off and went back to being kids. That next summer, I was out in Virginia visiting my father. And while in a grocery store, I came across that very ad, which you posted in this video, and literally went "SON OF A B*TCH!" right there in the aisle.
    Everything looked exactly the same as how we designed it, apart from the color. Practically all the things we asked for was there in the character creation. I was pissed! I was also 12! It's not like I was looking to make thousands of dollars off this concept. They could have merely sent me the action figure and I would have been content. I was just blown away that they could not even give recognition to my brother and my creation. I mean, I can't exactly say they "stole" the idea, cause we "gave" it to them. We wanted them to have it. I just felt ripped off, cause we handed them the idea, then they say "no"...then make it anyway. Sort of a cheap shot.
    Anyway, just thought I would pass on to you, how this character was made. Again, it is now just a tale, as I cannot really back up any other confirmation of it, apart from my brother, mother and possibly step-father, but...you're welcome. ;)

    • @hasenfangmusic
      @hasenfangmusic 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also, another thing: this also may explain why they slopped together the character very fast with various parts already made. They may have seen the idea concept we sent and jumped all over it, rushed out a quick prototype with those parts...and just ran with it. Probably why it came out so quickly after my brother and I sent in the concept. Just a thought.

    I've always wanted to get a few of these guys back when I started collecting. But as kid with limited funds, it was hard to do so. Since this figure was more rare and pricey than other stuff that were higher on my priority list. I really do regret not getting the Green Shirt figures that were released sometime around 2004-2005 when Hasbro was going crazy with army builder sets. I was fortunate enough to score the Cobra Trooper set back in the day though. Will you be reviewing any of the late 90's to mid 2000's ARAH sculpt figures? There were some really excellent figures then and good repaints. Just the plastic quality was downgraded compared to the original ARAH line.
    But excellent review as always! I look forward to next weeks review. Also, thank you for doing this review. I think this is a first. I haven't seen any in-depth look at the Steel Brigade. The different versions have always been confusing. This video helped clear up some of the confusion for me.

      +Silent Wobby Thank you! The vintage era (1982-1994) has priority for reviews. I may dabble in later releases, but I don't have immediate plans.

    I like this review. not to say I disliked Steel Brigade back then, I just didn't "fall for" the gimmick. now, seeing the figure and the angle Hasbro went with, I somewhat like it. and personalized stuff is interesting for that era. the dog soldier style helmet looks kind of like Wild Weasel. I wonder if this could be GI Joes version of the Spartan Trooper (Halo) or similar to the Clone trooper from Star Wars. No faces, just battle ready dudes ready to get busy and take down the enemy. thanks, HCC. now I am ready for that review of Recoil. he is a bad ass LRRP in my book. Green glasses and baby blue guns and all.

      +sam torres I recorded a segment about why I didn't get a Steel Brigade when I was a kid, but I cut it out for time. I didn't want to spend a lot of money (that was a lot of money at the time) and wait for weeks to receive a generic figure in the mail. As and adult collector, I'm happy to have them.

    Hi HCC788 - I am going through a Joe collection and had a quick question. I have 2 Steel Brigade figures - v1A and v1D - I found 2 green backpacks that match the color - what I am curious about (and did not see on the video) is that one of these backpacks have the "X" cross members on the back of the backpack and one does not. Pictures of SB in sealed bags I've looked at do not appear to have the X-member on the backpacks. I was wondering if a certain version of SB came with a X member backpack? This looks like the proper color that matches SB chest (not the brighter green of TF Duke). I know that some Airborne and Duke light tan backpacks have the X member in the backpack and some don't and maybe this is just Hasbro using whatever mold they could to create them. Any ideas if it matters which version of SB backpack belongs to would be greatly appreciated. Thanks - WK

      +Neal G That's a good question. I haven't thought about it. I have been so focused on just getting all of them that I didn't really think about how I would personalize it.

    Nice review! I stopped collecting after the '86 wave, so I missed out on this. Do you have anymore SW reviews coming up?

      +David Sharp I don't have any SW reviews coming up in the immediate future, unfortunately. It's all I can do to keep up with the Joe reviews.

      +Jakub Buszko Thanks! I don't have the Create-a-Cobra figure yet, but I would like to eventually review it. There are some people who make custom accessories!

      They did a "create a Cobra" figure as well in the 90's.

    I was a dumb kid. I named mine Lt. Action Jackson. I regret that dumb name.
