From what I've seen, Chillua's Art games mostly tell a story with of horror elements in it and the scary parts usually comes later in the games with the beginning having a guy/gal working a normal job like delivering packages, walking home from school or like in this one, working as a convenience store worker.
honestly that's what makes it scary for me; the idea that your boring, mundane job or life can take a turn for the worse - it being gradual is even better imo, as it gives you time to stew in any nervous feelings (which is amplified when you have anxiety) legit one of my biggest fears is just going throughout my daily life and then something happening that completely changes how i'll be able to live; trauma, suddenly going mute/blind/deaf, losing a limb, being stalked, stuff like that petrifies me

The uniqueness is wearing off really quick. PS1 style horror games with VHS filters are piling up really quickly, I haven’t seen one of these games that hasn’t used the trope of “real life face plastered onto a low poly model”. IMO It’s going to need some time to mature as a genre, I’ve seen pixel art indie games maximize what they can do with the limitations of the style whereas these games look worse than the actual 5th generation games they’re based on.

I mean the convenience store one was literally in slow motion, and the school one just had you running around with a tall women screaming her head off. That's not interesting or scary by any stretch of the imagination.
i bought and played this on my own time but i personally enjoyed it. it was mildly spooky for me and overall the suspense and atmosphere of being alone after hours in a convenient store was enough to settle me in and not make me feel bored.
Honestly this game is really good at scaring people because it has amazing buildup, tension, and a sense of looming dread that stands over you because you know you're playing a horror game but you don't know when the horror will actually start. The game really gets you with that sense of "Nothing is happening but something will!" type of feeling, it's a shame that Charlie spent 7 years in the mountains of Jotun training his mental aptitude to resist any sort of psychological warfare and becoming the most powerful individual to ever exist to get what makes this game so scary for most.
I see this argument a lot that because everything is normal that's tension building I really don't see that at all, first of all working a normal job with normal people doesn't build tension, an example of good tension building is petscop the messages on the signs are purposely weird and off-putting so something seems off, other examples would be if you feel like you're being watched, but here it's just working a night shift at a gas station. Also even if it was good tension building it lasts WAY too long.
@@Lowtiervergil347 Yeah that's fair but the point is that it works for a lot of people, I get that it doesn't really work for everyone (Hell charlie's proof of that) but for others, the uncannily realistic look that the game gives combined with it being just a normal day despite you knowing full well that it's a horror game really works to build tension. Kinda like how you scream at characters for doing something ordinary in a horror movie because you have the context that something will go wrong.
I think having a prior understanding of these games and how the dev makes them, means you build expectation without realising. Having been invested in this devs work, the horror almost comes from a new angle, a bar they have set in previous games. It’s not for everyone and without having that context, I can 100% see why it would not be scary at all. As far as kinds of horror go, the mundane really speaks to some people and to others it’s just that.

Yeah, and I think the only reason he isn’t scared is that he’s making jokes and stuff out of the games, and making up fun out of them. He’s also played a lot of horror games, both considered bad or good by other people. That’s how I became less scared of horror games, just by making jokes about them while playing or watching people play them. Most of the time in horror games sometimes they can be a bit goofy, so it makes the game less scary.

Watching Markiplier plat this I really loved this game, just the fact that the art style is great, the fact that you’re waiting for something bad to happen but it doesn’t till the very end, and just the idea of all those scary story videos by Mr.Nightmare we used to watch was now put into a game version.
I still watch Mr. Nightmare videos or just Reddit horror stories in general from time to time, and I really enjoy them! I think games like this one and videos like those create a creepy, unsettling atmosphere with horror elements rather than just being extremely action packed and scary, but some people like Charlie just can’t get into games like that, which is fine cause everyone has different tastes, it’s just too bad he can’t immerse himself in an off putting game like how Markiplier likes to do

Reminds me of working night shift at a gas station in a town with a population of >1000. Only people who would come in were crackheads, the homeless, and truckers. The ambiance of the lights and freezer were very spooky and accurate.

When the "scary" of your game is sudden things falling/jumping and extremely loud sound. You dont have horror you have surprise. Jump scares have done some big damage to actual horror games.

The length of a game or skill required for it doesn't matter that much to me. In my opinion, the vast, vast majority of horror games suck, because they rely on overused cliche monsters and cheap jump scares. Something jumping out and going "Boo" isn't scary, it's surprising. It's something that makes you jump, and then immediately go back to not caring. What I like in horror is something genuinely unsettling, something disturbing. I don't want the spooky man going boo, I want When Day Breaks. Sure, the atmosphere of these games is cool and even off-putting. But then it never goes anywhere with it. Something cliche and "creepy" happens, or a jumpscare is thrown in, and then it goes right back to monotony for another 20 minutes. It doesn't create any narrative, any mystery, any reason to care or explanation for what's happening, for _why_ you should be afraid. It's spooky bad thing what does bad things.

I always wondered why that was because I learned to count to 10 in Japanese with 4 being pronounced as "shi". I see all the time of japanese people and vtubers saying "yon" instead and never understood why, so thanks for the info

The uniqueness is wearing off really quick. PS1 style horror games with VHS filters are piling up really quickly, I haven’t seen one of these games that hasn’t used the trope of “real life face plastered onto a low poly model”. IMO It’s going to need some time to mature as a genre, I’ve seen pixel art indie games maximize what they can do with the limitations of the style whereas these games look worse than the actual 5th generation games they’re based on.

i bought and played this on my own time but i personally enjoyed it. it was mildly spooky for me and overall the suspense and atmosphere of being alone after hours in a convenient store was enough to settle me in and not make me feel bored.

Honestly this game is really good at scaring people because it has amazing buildup, tension, and a sense of looming dread that stands over you because you know you're playing a horror game but you don't know when the horror will actually start. The game really gets you with that sense of "Nothing is happening but something will!" type of feeling, it's a shame that Charlie spent 7 years in the mountains of Jotun training his mental aptitude to resist any sort of psychological warfare and becoming the most powerful individual to ever exist to get what makes this game so scary for most.
I see this argument a lot that because everything is normal that's tension building I really don't see that at all, first of all working a normal job with normal people doesn't build tension, an example of good tension building is petscop the messages on the signs are purposely weird and off-putting so something seems off, other examples would be if you feel like you're being watched, but here it's just working a night shift at a gas station. Also even if it was good tension building it lasts WAY too long.
@@Lowtiervergil347 Yeah that's fair but the point is that it works for a lot of people, I get that it doesn't really work for everyone (Hell charlie's proof of that) but for others, the uncannily realistic look that the game gives combined with it being just a normal day despite you knowing full well that it's a horror game really works to build tension. Kinda like how you scream at characters for doing something ordinary in a horror movie because you have the context that something will go wrong.
I think having a prior understanding of these games and how the dev makes them, means you build expectation without realising. Having been invested in this devs work, the horror almost comes from a new angle, a bar they have set in previous games. It’s not for everyone and without having that context, I can 100% see why it would not be scary at all. As far as kinds of horror go, the mundane really speaks to some people and to others it’s just that.

Yeah, and I think the only reason he isn’t scared is that he’s making jokes and stuff out of the games, and making up fun out of them. He’s also played a lot of horror games, both considered bad or good by other people. That’s how I became less scared of horror games, just by making jokes about them while playing or watching people play them. Most of the time in horror games sometimes they can be a bit goofy, so it makes the game less scary.

Watching Markiplier plat this I really loved this game, just the fact that the art style is great, the fact that you’re waiting for something bad to happen but it doesn’t till the very end, and just the idea of all those scary story videos by Mr.Nightmare we used to watch was now put into a game version.

I still watch Mr. Nightmare videos or just Reddit horror stories in general from time to time, and I really enjoy them! I think games like this one and videos like those create a creepy, unsettling atmosphere with horror elements rather than just being extremely action packed and scary, but some people like Charlie just can’t get into games like that, which is fine cause everyone has different tastes, it’s just too bad he can’t immerse himself in an off putting game like how Markiplier likes to do

Reminds me of working night shift at a gas station in a town with a population of >1000. Only people who would come in were crackheads, the homeless, and truckers. The ambiance of the lights and freezer were very spooky and accurate.

When the "scary" of your game is sudden things falling/jumping and extremely loud sound. You dont have horror you have surprise. Jump scares have done some big damage to actual horror games.

@@thalesan8790 I couldn't care less about most "big" games that go on for ages or require massive amounts of skill, though I'm just one guy, and can't speak for the rest of Charlie's audience. The length of a game or skill required for it doesn't matter that much to me. In my opinion, the vast, vast majority of horror games suck, because they rely on overused cliche monsters and cheap jump scares. Something jumping out and going "Boo" isn't scary, it's surprising. It's something that makes you jump, and then immediately go back to not caring. What I like in horror is something genuinely unsettling, something disturbing. I don't want the spooky man going boo, I want When Day Breaks. Sure, the atmosphere of these games is cool and even off-putting. But then it never goes anywhere with it. Something cliche and "creepy" happens, or a jumpscare is thrown in, and then it goes right back to monotony for another 20 minutes. It doesn't create any narrative, any mystery, any reason to care or explanation for what's happening, for _why_ you should be afraid. It's spooky bad thing what does bad things.
