    Good morning Linda, wow it's so interesting when you stand back and observe you can see the difference in colour in the grass dry one section wet in the other. With your pond a man by the name of Joel Salatin he is amazing he's in America he has a video on ponds and how to seal them plus so much more I'm sure you'll get lots out of his info. I love your gorgeous chicken house and the fact you've been able to salvage 100 year old timbers, that's just amazing, I love it. You've certainly got your work cut out but that's why you look so good and healthy, you really are an inspiration Linda xxx

      Hi Kirsten - the grass colour changes actually reflect where the animals have recently been - dry - they have just been there - very green - they will be enjoying it soon! Joel Salatin - I have a couple of his books which have helped me lots. He suggests using pigs to fix dams but i'm hesitant to go there. I will be trying bentonite clay if the level drops sufficiently. Have spent a fortune on polymers which haven't worked. I love my chicken coop too!! Thanks Kirsten xx

    Nice looking chicken coop. I would recommend you go for a bigger mesh for the floor. That mesh will capture the poo and not let it through. You will need at least a 25mm x25mm mesh size

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว

      It may not have looked it on the video but the mesh is 25x25mm which is the same size that I'm using on my mobile coop and seems to work fine. Appreciate your comments and pleased that I don't have to go in and change it as that would mean pulling the whole thing apart! Thanks so much for watching and for your feedback!!

    Sounds like a good plan and I wish you all the best. Your doggies are just so cute and they look exactly like 2 sisters me and my sister had a few years back now, hers was called Roxy and mine was Foxy. They both lived long happy lives and I now have 2 cheeky Puggles a 7 year old sister and brother, who have more Beagle in them than Pug. The male is Remi and his sister is Rosey.

    Wow. You are going to be busy! But some of the projects should also safe you a lot of work - like finishing the chicken coop and the re-homing of the ducks. All that work taking care of all the different duck houses...

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Busy - for sure!! The thing about online is all the packaging and associated costs with transport. Honey is heavy so costly to send. I don’t mind people slowly becoming aware of my stall then I can slowly add things to it like plants. Honey keeps so what I don’t sell this year will keep for next . I’m a tortoise rather than a hate haha!

    How about duckweed (Lemna minor), azolla or water hyazinth for the dam? They are all edible (humans and animals) and grow like crazy and might maybe be banned in Australia? Here duckweed is a native (and legal), so it is coldhardy. Azzola and Waterhyazinth are not frosthardy. I don't have a pont so I grow duckweed and azzola in waterbuckets (also tried WH, but that is to big for a bucket. Might try in one of my IBC Tanks, that I want to cut open for exactly that purpose), and use them as mulch. You could harvest it and feed it to your animals - might be a good thing to have that on hand in a dry year, when the grass is growing slow and you need to supplement with other fodder anyway. The plants would also shade the water, so less evaporation.

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Martina!! I had tried getting some floating water plants going earlier on but it didn't take. I might try again. One of my neighbours has a green floating plant and the other a red one - will have to do my homework & work out what they are and grab some.. I love the idea of scooping out bucket loads to feed my grazing crew in dry conditions!! Great idea . I learnt all of this stuff in my PDC but I find in practice ,not everything comes to mind when you need it. 😆

    • @MartinaSchoppe
      @MartinaSchoppe ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you YT 😂
      This guy is freaking awesome! That's where I got the idea. As he is in Canada, he uses duckweed, as the other two mentioned will not survive the winter and would need to be "replanted". Duck weed is named duckweed, because, ducks love it - so it might be challenging to start it directly in the dam - your beautiful flock of ducks will probably eat it all away immediatley 🤣
      I forget a lot, too. That's why I like to re-watch videos and re-read books - it is simply impossible to learn everything at once or make sense of everything hearing about it the fist time. Recently I re-read a dog training book, which I've read maybe four times already and I still had a major light bulb moment...

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't be here without YT!! I did get some lillies growing and they were just reaching the surface but my ducks keep knocking them back down - impossible to get going. If I add in a few buckets of the neighbours plants maybe I'll be lucky enough to get something going

    • @MartinaSchoppe
      @MartinaSchoppe ปีที่แล้ว

      @@huttonsvalleypermaculture I would also not be planting food plants without YT :D
      I think I started the duckweed "producktion" with about 4 to 6 leaves I "stole" from water plant containers in my local garden center. I put the leaves on plant I was buying and at home i dropped the tiny thingies in my old 70l zinc tub. They really like rather warm "dirty" water and multiply like crazy. If I don't harvest in time, they push each outer out of their "living room" :D :D :D

    Is mesh flooring Ok for chicken feet? I tried it in my duck coop but it cut the ducks feet, even with straw on top. I had a mess of Bumblefoot last summer.

    • @huttonsvalleypermaculture
      @huttonsvalleypermaculture  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve got the mesh floor on the bottom of my mobile coop but with timber battens for the chickens to walk on and it works well. I’ll be doing something similar when I make the roosts. So an option so they don’t t have to walk on it!
