'ONE' OF THE WORLD'S OLDEST WORKING STEAM LOCOMOTIVES IS WITHDRAWN.

  • Following the Foxfield Railway's Summer Steam Gala, July 22nd 2018, Bellerophon, was withdrawn for its ten year boiler overhaul. Bearing all its Victorian elegance it was built in 1874 by Haydock Foundry, near St Helens, Lancashire, it worked at Haydock Collieries. After a working life of ninety years, Berllerophon finally retired in 1964 since when it has been a popular engine, running on a number of heritage railways. Its exploits on the 1 in 19 Foxfield Bank have become legendary for a locomotive nearly 150 years old.

    It’s so cool to see a machine that’s well older than any person alive today still in running order. Hope somebody with knowledge and finances gets it back on the rails. Some objects tend to develop a “soul” of sorts, something that just refuses to fall silent. This locomotive has to be one of them.

    the amount of people this machine helped ( to heat their homes, feed families, delivering all sorts of goods) is amazing! imagine how important just one machine is for it's home country and even worldwide. its a venerable task. it's great to see these old simple and strong still able to do what it was designed to do. stands testament to the men that built it as well. nice of you for posting this ! thank you!

    Having taken several fan trips in the UK, some of oldest equipment still running can be seen there. Some are main line trips which surprised me; Even the London underground has vintage trips to the suburbs on weekends at certain times of the year. The Bluebell was my favorite, running on a dedicated rail with even a tunnel on the route. Takes lots of volunteers to keep them all going.

    • @Charmaster04
      @Charmaster04 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@oriondecimus8421 Look at it this way. Thomas & Friends has fed at least one American with an interest in British outline.
      I became interested in British OO when my dad bought me a set of five Bachmann Branchline (British) 7 plank privately owned wagons for my Bachmann (American) Thomas, Donald, Douglass, Emily, Salty, Bill and Ben to pull. I am now the happy owner of a Southern Q1 and a Great Western Railway County of Devon, and my dad has bought a GWR Large Prairie tank engine, a GWR Pannier, a Freightliner 08, and several larger engines that haven't been run as much. We have visited the National Railway Museum in York and the Straspey Railway and ridden behind an Ivatt 2MT and on the Jacobite Train. I would say having a passion for Thomas and Friends has done more for my interest in British trains than having an anglophile for a mother (Waxes Shapespearian).
      Anyways, I'm sure people watching Thomas & Friends videos occasionally get annoyed by adults pointing out that Thomas is a smaller LBSC E2.

    QGR A10 0-4-2, 10 inch cylinders, was sent back to Ipswich Railway Workshops, where it had been assembled in 1865 ( Nielsen built), for the QGR. It served first as a light Passenger engine, then as a contractor's engine for railway building, all over Queensland till the 1920s, then retired to Roma Street Station ( Brisbane) with two of its original passengercars.
    Later a change to Limestone Park, Ipswich again as an outside monument. Finally to the Ipswich
    Workshops Museum, where it was rebuilt, and put into Heritage Service,
    Now in 2020 ( 155 years old, still running..).no boiler problems thanks to The Workshops Museum.

      Relax those oltimers just need sometimes a decade of rest and recuperation
      This summer the oldest and first steam cogwheel engine ever build by SLM in Switserland was again in service for the 150 year aniversery of the cogwheel railway.
      Another 19 century engine (1887 Hohenzollern) was last year put back into service after mayor overhaul.
      it ran 100 years in continious service on several coalmine sites in Germany and is identical too 12 engines bought by of the Dutch state railroad in that time.
      Now its engine nr 13 in the class in Dutch national railways colors and hauls passenger trains on a heritage railway.
