    Works No 4101 0-4-0CT
Built in 1901 for Shelton Iron & Steel Works Limited, Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire. The locomotive has a slewing engine powering a jib through 360 degrees. Situated within the construction of the jib, a reciprocating engine gives a lifting capacity of five tons.
The locomotive had a new boiler fitted in 1921 by Kerr Stuart and was converted from coal fired to oil burning in 1961.
The locomotive was replaced by diesel cranes in 1968, and was preserved in 1970 and moved to the East Somerset Railway in 1973, were the locomotive acted as shed pilot and used for heavy lifting jobs and on the Mendip Vale extension. Withdrawn in 1986, the locomotive later moved to the Foxfield Railway.
In this video we see the locomotive working around Foxfiel Colliery, performing demonstration lifts and working solo and as banking locomotive on demonstration goods trains up the bank.

“Harvey’s different” “He doesn’t even look like an engine” “Surely the fat controller wont let him pull coaches” “ He’s just Cranky on wheels” “HE’S NOT TAKING MY MAIL”

I've always wondered how these crane tanks (or crane engines) actually work! This video really demonstrates that! Brilliant footage! :)

Very interesting. I've always had a fascination for cranes, and for railways; and I'd never seen a railway crane like this one before.

What about Harvey from Thomas the tank engine and friends?

his basis is one of these crane engines I believe it goes to show that the engines of Sodor have real life inspirations in their designs.

Is this the only operational crane tank in the UK?
The stupidly steep incline makes a good spectacle as always.

I didn't know any of those types of railway crane were left in a steamable condition.

Poor little crane loco being dragged along by the Saddle Tank engines, listen to the way larger engines puff quite slowly and the crane engine with it's smaller drivers is puffing madly like a toddler chasing after mum. 4ft drivers on the tanks and 2ft 6 on the crane?

    weee!
they sort of seem like the shay design would have been more suitable, with its geared down engine so it can creep... very important on a crane...
ironic. thinking of the lil crane tank (unloved and unrunning) at the old carriageworks in eveleigh, sydney. according to the news reports, theres currently a fire one or two streets over...
