The Black Parade album surrounds “the patient” who’s dying. It’s about death, and about life, and each song has a story relevant to the patient, but each song has a universal quality that makes it safe to explore each topic personally, it’s the same with many others of theirs. I have no clue how on earth you are so spot on, but yes thats the point of the songs, and I would love to see more of them on here.

I've heard it said before that "Welcome to the Black Parade" is the "Bohemian Rhapsody" of my generation, and to be honest... yeah, that's kinda true. It was such a phenomenon when it came out, and for good reason, and there's not many people from my generation who were teenagers in 2006 who don't know the song. All you need is that very first piano note and everybody just KNOWS it's "Welcome to the Black Parade" and sings along. It's unifying and empowering.

I loved this video. MCR’s music deals w death and mental health a lot, a mix of hope and desperation. It’s part of why they have such a strong fanbase, because fans so intensely connect to the music and usually discover them when they most need it. I hope you listen to more of their stuff :)

Bts are similar, though less depression and more of learning to love yourself. Not to take away from MCR, but that's why ARMY is also really close similarly. I'm a casual fan of MCR because I don't wanna face the stigma of being "edgy" when in reality I don't do edgy things, in fact the most edgy thing I do is wearing ears/tail sometimes though it's because I'm a furry and a pet, and wearing black. Though, the black is because it goes with everything and doesn't stain as much.
Idk why im going on this tangent but im tired and im sick with the flu so eh idk why i do half the things i do when im sick so ye

"I did this for the kids" lmao thanks you're a cool Dad xD
Sorry but I had to laugh a little when you cried. We've all been there dude, welcome to being a fan of MCR, where we connect references in the music to overly specific events in our lives and accidentally lose it (although I was hoping this would be an easy fun one where we wouldn't make you cry! At least you didn't listen to Ghost of You, it might've gotten messy lol)
Honestly you gave "I'm Not Okay" a new light for me. I always kind of looked at it like a struggle keeping the facade of being okay when all you really want to do is ask for help, and everyone knows you're not okay but we still feel the pressure to act like nothing is wrong and so the song for me was kind of about the pain of that conflict and admitting to yourself how not okay you are. It never really occurred to me that instead of pain, it could be a celebration. That we're all pretending to be okay about something, so we don't actually have to be ashamed about it and can just shout out loud that we aren't okay, but that's okay. New perspectives like this are part of what keep me coming back to this channel!

MCR gave a voice to a generation of kids and teens, many of which queer, or mentally ill, or both. They gave a voice we could relate to, songs that scream our pain and fear and anger out but also let us know that these feelings are okay to feel. I keep revisiting these songs and I’m never disappointed by them. They never get old or tiring. So many of these feelings are still relatable, and just as strong as they were when I was a confused kid who heard them for the first time.

I really recommend you listen to more songs by them and check out live versions!! If possible watch interviews as well, because even if half of it is fooling around, the members all had really interesting and important things to say about their music and journey through life.

I just really wish the MCR haters would watch this. They’re sooo pissed off at the fans who have ruined the reputation of the band, that they can’t actually see the beauty of the lyrics of their songs. Every single song is so musically and emotionally calculated. Every aspect of it is on point. Just because the band is getting back and tickets aren’t cheep, doesn’t mean it’s any of the members’ fault. They’re not cash grabbers as they’re all doing very well with their side projects.

MCR did a song called "Cancer" and twenty one pilots did a cover. There's a lot of (sometimes heated) debate about "who did it better". People get a bit crazy about one or the other. I kind of think it’s disrespectful to compare them because it discounts the song itself, and isn’t appropriate given the subject matter. Given that it gives me chills every time and makes me cry almost every time, independent of the version, I’d say they’re both great : ) but to each their own ❤️ I’d love to see his take on it. It’s almost a “passing the torch” type thing if you think about it, they both handle the material differently, but so well.

Something I've always loved about My Chem is being able to talk about sad or morbid things but in a more poetic way than just overtly saying "I'm so sad I wanna die" or something. There's not a lot of hamfisted lines about how much emo pain they're in or whatever.
I loved them cause they addressed death and sadness and pain in like, a fairly healthy or at least human and just accepting way. You're gonna be labeled emo and edgelord anyways focusing on these themes, but even before I had decent critical thinking skills around music, I just kinda knew there was something different about MCR.

I'm loving your understanding of the videos and lyrics! It's soooo on pooint!!!! Helena is about G and Mikey's grandma. She was G's biggest fan and support system, and when she died he wrote that song to her. He said that during the filming of the video he almost cried so many times cause Marc captured exactly what he wanted to say. Btw Marc Webb directed a bunch of their 3Cheers videos, he's awesome! And you're sooooo good in explaining things. Like, the way you felt listening and watching the video, how they use the melodies, not only the lyrics, to tell a story. You rock dude!
Btw, The album Black Parade was written with the guys locked in a mansion that theh say was either haunted or just brought really depressing feelings to them. They say it was the hardest album to do and they even fought a lot, they think cause the house, or being trapped, was doing something to their minds. WttBP is about death, and the afterlife. G says he had a lot of thoughts of death and suicide during their time in that house, and that song was about how he thought death would come differently to anyone, depending on how they'd like it. Like, one person would like it if thwir pet would show up to bring them to the after, and he though about a Parade being the way they'd be brought to the after, it's a beautiful image when you think about it. Someone being afraid, and then a giant parade coming and holding your hand in order to make you feel better and "not forgotten". But yeah, that song is one of the biggest cries of their discography, and that's saying something.

I'm going to apologize now for the length of this comment.
I'm about the age of the band members, so was here the first time around and so f***** excited that they're back and touring because I never got to see them live. I really thought they were done. Short background on the break up- Gerard (and Mikey as well I'm not 100%) had a pretty bad drug and alcohol problem that he kicked early on. By the time 2013 came around he was struggling with that again. He said he was falling into old habits. He had a wee one at home to think about (Bandit Lee) and so they split up. They all did solo projects though, so that's interesting to look up. Its hard to be mad at them for "stealing my band" from me because it was for his physical and mental health and also the rest of his family, too. With all he did in regards to mental health it just didn't seem right to resent him for taking care of his mental health and being honest about it. He is also a comic artist, he worked on the Umbrella Academy series; creating and writing it while Gabriel Bá illustrated. Gerard also draws, he went to art school. All of the members are multitalented. Mikey pretty much learned the bass about 3 weeks before they started playing.
Not mixing up MCR and P!atD should be easier now that you've heard the differences back to back. (I think) When you said "Oh no, she's definitely still dead. Never mind." I was rolling. lol You can't ever overthink MCR. For the Helena mv look up them talking about Frank and the casket. lol. The inspiration for Teenagers came from a bus ride Gee took (he was about 30). There were many high school kids on the bus and he realized he was actually a little afraid. Then thought about how at one point he was one of those scary teenagers. You had me laughing again with "They need those to make the musics good." That sometimes teens will tear down and destroy something even though they love it. The idea that as a teen you have more power than you think was something we didn't really learn when I was a teen, MCR was one of the groups that brought that up. No one else is living your life or in your head, you're responsible for you and reaching out for help, etc, is not a bad thing. It shows self awareness. More useless trivia- Everyone was injured in some way doing the mv for Famous Last Words. It was a heck of a video shoot. Happens when you go all in on your music, I guess. The feeling you inspired when you said "nonono keep living, keep living" was heart warming. 18:03 you said I'm ok, and I'm on the other end over here saying "you promise?" 16:50 omgs lol I kinda felt bad because you were so cheerful and I knew what was coming. :/ The parade kind of is a metaphor as well. Like you said, the parade was something he cherished, (spot on again). The idea was that when you die the afterlife is different for everyone, what you experience is something in your life that was important to you; so since this guy cherished his trip to see the marching band with his father that's what he saw. There is also the idea of marching through life/ toward death since we're all dying from the day we're born. Along with the things we do when someone dies - put them on a pedestal and funerals and viewings and all are very public things, so you're kind of paraded around (while staying still...not sure that works lol). Listening to them can be extremely emotional, but its cathartic. Yes, this is what I'm going through or have gone through, and yes we'll make it out the other side. There's a quote somewhere that says "I am Gerard Way and I survivied....you will too" He was always totally open and raw about his struggles with drugs, with mental health, with family, everything and that made a huge difference because it helped to destigmatize it a bit, split it wide open. This band saved a lot of lives.
I said this before on another video, but I appreciate so much your willingness to be real in these videos. You're doing much the same as far as destigmatizing things and bringing stuff out into the open. Thank you so, so much for being willing to share those things, to show what emotions the music gives you. I imagine it must be hard, and probably tiring in a few ways, and its something you don't have to do. You could edit all of that out of your videos if you wanted, but you leave it. idk if I could do that, I admire you for it so much.
Suggestions from TBP (my favorites, I think)
    House of wolves
Mama (kind of emotional, just a warning if you listen)
    The Sharpest Lives
Blood (is just kind of a fun little ditty)
Tbh, I'd suggest all of it, but Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge has my heart.

I come back to this video every once in a while and I have to say - while I'm still hoping for MCR 3, I genuinely love this reaction and just how well you always seem to tap into the feel and message of any particular artist you check out. Just brings a smile to my face and I can't help but be proud of you as a creator, going after what makes you happy and expanding your horizons and world view on music and pop culture.

While you're covering bands that defined my teenage years I'd like to mention a band that's a lot less popular but still had a cult following, Mindless Self Indulgence. It's really weird and interesting and I'd like to see what you make of it but also completely understand if you don't want to touch it because it is a bit much

You'll Rebel To Anything came out the year I graduated from high school (2005). Shut Me Up and Never Wanted to Dance were always on my Myspace page. Time warp.

I hate Jimmy Page, but considering the slurs they use it might be sensitive but I am sure plenty other songs could be responded to.

Plus Gerard Way married Lyn-Z from MSI, so there's that nice connection too (^-^)

@@michellehalemassacre Jimmy Page would be an excellent example of how much things have changed in almost 15 years. MSI would probably be "cancelled" by some if they released this song in 2019. [Quotation marks because I personally dislike the term, ha.]

I'm re-watching this because I've been on a Black Parade kick for a few days now and damn Bill, your reactions just always make me smile. You are just so open and receptive to art, that it makes my day every time. Still waiting for MCR 3 but just know that no matter which way you take the channel, we're all down for the ride.
On that note, I highly recomend going through all of the Black Parade album, it's such an amazing ride. This coming from a long time metal fan :D

Loved this video!!! I've been excited for this for a while :)) I really hope you do a part 2. If you do please react to 'I dont love you' , 'The ghost of you.' and 'Mama'. Also I would like to add that The Black Parade album is a concept album so some of the lyrics are to do with the storyline within the album. Don't feel like you need to do a video on it but it would be cool that in a few months time if you listened to The Black Parade all the way through in one sitting, to get the whole feel of the concept. (Also not all the music videos were uploaded to youtube at the time they were released.)

I love the connection you have with music. You aren't afraid to cry and to let it move you and that means so much to me. I hear so much how people think MCR is just noise, but they have gotten me through some really hard times and to hear such appreciation from someone who doesn't really know their music just brings so much joy to my heart. Thank you for your work

You seriously nailed the analysis of the songs / lyrics. The emotions and story behind them. THIS is why MCR has so much love and respect. They seriously hit on everything I was going through growing up with these albums, they saved my life.
I would love to hear a part 2 after you’ve gone through their whole discography.

I saw the thumbnail and my first thought was "oh no, MCR's gonna make Bill cry"
Edit: I'll always love seeing someone understand and appreciate the band that got me through my darkest years 💙

The Black Parade came out when my Opa (grandpa) was in the hospital dying of cancer that eventually spread to his brain. For months my mom and I would drive five hours almost every weekend to spend it in the hospital with him and my Oma. He lasted way longer than the doctors thought he would. Stubbornly he wanted to make it to his birthday at the end of Feb and he made it to Mar 15.
I took a lot of comfort in the CD and still have it and play it regularly. Used to sit on the floor of his hospital room and listen to music on my iPod classic while playing solitaire.
