brings back middle school memories in 2006-2008. we all know that first key in the song.

comparing it to Bohemian Rhapsody is kinda spot on for exactly what Corey was saying, its a rock opera. Every MCR album is its own story. They are pretty cool.

Ya know, I didn’t get the Bohemian Rhapsody comparison, until you said the word opera. Now, I understand what you’re registering as similar- it’s the DRAMA. Yes, both songs change pace, but they do so dramatically, thematically. MCR was all about the drama, and I believe the album The Black Parade was considered to be a rock opera, which is basically an album that tells a story throughout, thematically. The oldest one I can think of is The Who’s Tommy, which was the quintessential rock opera.

I remember having a similar sentiment when this song/album first came out. Like yeah, both songs have different pacing, but it's more of how it affected me and the dramatics of it all that made them seem similar to me. Also, when Bohemian Rhapsody came out, it was something that had never been done before. And this felt as epic to me at the time. Still does in some ways.

It also, frankly, sounds a lot like Queen, at least to me. 😂 In general, but Ray's style in particular has a very Brian May vibe about it.

The companion vid that goes with this is Famous Last Words which is also fab along with Ghost of You (you will see why the Bassist wears a medal on his uniform in that). All their albums are amazing and all have their own stories. When death comes for you it comes in the form of an important memory, in this case a man remembering his father and the parade he saw as a kid.

The Black Parade is the third studio album by American rock band My Chemical Romance, released in Europe on October 23, 2006, and the United States on October 24, 2006, by Reprise Records. It is a rock opera and concept album centered on a dying man with cancer known as "The Patient". The album tells the story of his apparent death, experiences in the afterlife, and subsequent reflections on his life.

Funeral procession...I believe that's the phrase that Olli was looking for. Reminiscent of a funeral procession down a street, similar to a state funeral. This song is an absolute anthem and I believe many people would agree Bohemian Rhapsody can easily be considered the same. Thanks so much for sharing your reaction. Take care.

Helena is an excellent song as well. He wrote that song for his grandmother when she passed. She was their biggest supporter.
100% agree with the Bohemian Rapsody idea. It does something similar switching styles and timing. I can understand the Blink-182 comparison, but they are too different to me to really compare them. Blink was playing around, having fun with pop-punk. MCR was telling an epic story with emo.

The answer is in the middle. Giving Rhapsody its props as an untouchable entity is kinda correct, but structurally for what modern music is it does resemble our closest effort in popular music for an opus. However the modern opus crown is NOFX's The Decline but thats unfortunately buried behind radio play (not comparing to NOFX to Queen, just in sense of depth, profundity and phase in modern music)

Are you taking about a "Jazz Funeral?" At least that's what my jazz studies professor called it. Btw, there's a great version of the Black Parade by Postmodern Jukebox that emulates a jazz funeral and I highly recommend you check it out if you liked the original track

This is the only song I know of by them, but the video was new to me. Did you recognize Lukas Haas? He was the patient in the vid. He was a great child actor (still acting) in the 90s. This song was really good, but to say it's the modern Bohemian Rhapsody is a stretch. 😆 But I'm still interested in hearing more from them. Much love from Oregon! ❤

It is absolutely that generation's Bohemian Rhapsody. They're not saying it's better than Bohemian Rhapsody. To say otherwise is just trying to gatekeep. Regardless of what genre people listen to, everyone I have ever met likes this song. Even if they hate every other song My Chemical Romance wrote.
