first time at maize well done to get good conditions for job ,, take a look at tom pemberton checking out there maize for cutting , video is up today , his father seems very switched on regards feed value etc another good video gerry :)
Good video harvesting maize 🌽 Gerry weather did you proud and left fields in a good condition 👌 was gonna ask how the cattle were doing but thats the next video 🤔😂
Nice to see the maize coming off👍 just watched Mr pemberton before you, for an outsider maize sees a bit of a gamble if the weather doesn’t play ball compared to grass but guess maize beats grass if it comes out the field ok??🤔🤷♂
Great video as always. Dryer than some other maize harvest videos. Does working on land this time of year do much damage to soil structure. Do you plough straight after harvest
Very nice tidy work on the pit-seems a good crop. Just to the clear covering-does that attract birds? Seen it ravaged by magpies before. Throw up a few helium baloons-crows wont come near the place!
I am thinking that is a whole new pit for the Maize. The potatoes and carrots area is still there. No mention of it on previous videos that I have seen.
I have a set. The ones that come with it were 3 ft tall. Which too tall for the Jf and a combine filling into it. So I have them modified to suit, cut down to 18”, it’ll mean I’ll not have to take sides off at all. There ment to be painted 2 months ago but never happened yet.
It’s a balancing act to get it cut at right stage. It’s probably more important to have the cob right then the leave green. But it looks nicer in the pit when it has the green.
Have sides. They were away getting modified. I don’t want them full size. I want them to suit filling from jf 900, that combine will fill into it. Dont want to have to take them off. They’re getting unpainted this week
This will reduce the about of maize meal needed but will replace a lot of the feed potatoes needed. Feed potatoes have sky rocketed in price in recent years from 15-25€ ton to 70-90 ton. They aren’t worth that. So we had to look at alternatives
After the washout that was the first half of the year and cold the back end is playing ball with great conditions for potato and maize harvest. Is there much additional cost per acre sowing under plastic ?
About 200 per acre. So it needs to average over 2 ton per acre to cover cost at last years price . The stuff we planed under plastic done lot more then 2 ton per acre. We will plant all under plastic in 2025
Hope the cattle get a good push on from it when you introduce it to their diet in the next few weeks and benefit from it in weight gain. The dairy men swear by the stuff!
Great video Gerry , well done on the Maize , looks great. Enjoyed watching. 👍🏼👍🏼
Sounds a great trip. Maize looks well.
Super stuff Gerry. Great to get the maize in good conditions
I enjoy your videos.
Did we miss the construction of the new maize pit Gerry.
Well ware and the best of luck with the Maize
Good stuff Gerry hope you had a great holiday well deserved 👍
Hard to beat a break away. I wish I was still away to be honest 😂
Nice to see you on the draw , usually your the harvester man, great video gerry keep them coming
It’s long time since I drew silage….. could be 15 years. Nice to be back at it 😁👍
Another great video.
Thanks 🙂👍

Cattle video is coming…. 😁

Tidy job.
Smashing video Gerry, for one moment I thought that was a black Massey on the draw and Adrian would have been delighted 😂
Are you joking, wouldn’tLet a Massey around the place 😂. Joking
Great video as always. Dryer than some other maize harvest videos.

Good to see you getting the maize in, not been the greatest year for maize it seems in Ireland or in the uk from what I’ve heard.
The wet spring ment late planting which has affected crops, but they have recovered pretty well and haven’t done too bad in most cases.
Very nice tidy work on the pit-seems a good crop. Just to the clear covering-does that attract birds? Seen it ravaged by magpies before. Throw up a few helium baloons-crows wont come near the place!
Great video. Keep eye on sheet that birds don’t attack. We cover on top sheet wit heavy plastic bird repellent sheet because I learned the hard way😤.
That's decent looking corn for as cold/wet of a summer as you had.
Yes it’s done well considering the late downing date and wet start it had
Just wondering was de maize pit put behind the silage pit if so where did you put the carrots and potatoes as u usual put them there
I am thinking that is a whole new pit for the Maize. The potatoes and carrots area is still there. No mention of it on previous videos that I have seen.
I think the maize pit has been built in the reclaimed area.
Nice going there.. nice outfit not like some of the rooters that's going around the country trying to cut...
Is that a new silage pit down where you cleaned up at end of yard?
We’re gonna harvest ours next week, still not completely ripe but how long do you leave in November 🤷🏼♂️
Be interesting to see how you get on with silo save powder, never used or seen it used .
Yes I’m considering using it on grass silage next year and put it to test
Would you ever get silage sided for the Smyth gerry?? Or is it better as a grain trailer for your outfit
I have a set. The ones that come with it were 3 ft tall. Which too tall for the Jf and a combine filling into it. So I have them modified to suit, cut down to 18”, it’ll mean I’ll not have to take sides off at all. There ment to be painted 2 months ago but never happened yet.
They are dying to get into the neighbouring field😂
First
Do cattle do better on maize silage in terms of cost/ weight gain ?
They say they do. I hope so or we’re screwed 😂
Next time you’re state side drop in if you’re by Kentucky. I’m from Inniskeen originally.
I woukd….😂. Drop send on a message on some Facebook/instagram or somewhere
💪💪👌👌🙏🙏🇮🇪🇮🇪👍👍
👍🫡
It’s a pity the leaves ended up dying off before the cob was ripe. Nice bit of feed value in the leaves when they’re still green
It’s a balancing act to get it cut at right stage. It’s probably more important to have the cob right then the leave green. But it looks nicer in the pit when it has the green.
Cost of tonne in the pit.
Havnt a costing on it. Or even measured tonnage. It’s not cheap to grow, but neither is buying in feed. I must do a costing on it
Only half trailer on there
Have sides. They were away getting modified. I don’t want them full size. I want them to suit filling from jf 900, that combine will fill into it. Dont want to have to take them off. They’re getting unpainted this week
Can you do without buying in maize meal this year Gerry?
This will reduce the about of maize meal needed but will replace a lot of the feed potatoes needed. Feed potatoes have sky rocketed in price in recent years from 15-25€ ton to 70-90 ton. They aren’t worth that. So we had to look at alternatives

08.23. Most farmers when they remind themselves about 2023
Still have nightmares about it and early 24
Looks like a nice new silo you haven't shown yet
I make very few videos these days. I Havnt the time. I’ll try to make more
sila save is a waste of money on grass
On grass silage?
