  • Participatory photography is a powerful tool for empowering communities and enabling them to represent themselves visually. By equipping individuals with skills to use mobile phone cameras and encouraging them to document their lives and experiences, participatory photography can bring to light hidden issues, challenge stereotypes and give voice to underrepresented groups.
Strong visual skills are essential for effective community self-representation through photography, and shouldn't be overlooked. This includes knowledge of composition, lighting, and storytelling techniques, as well as the ability to work collaboratively and respectfully with community members. With these skills, participatory photography can become a transformative process that not only creates powerful images but also fosters dialogue, understanding, and social change.
femLENS is a nonprofit association that champions participatory photography and provides training, resources, and opportunities for women and girls to use photography as a tool for empowerment and self-representation.
