I've liked James Blunt vocals and songs but have not bought his music. Two days ago, through watching him in another interview, I learned about Monsters which I've played multiple times and will now purchase his music. It's the most heartfelt song I've heard.
Not really a fan of James Blunt but always respected him. His humour is super smart and his last comment to James reflects that in spades - this interview was about James Blunt rather than a vehicle for the interviewer - so we can thank James O'Brien for that.

Such a fascinating interviewer Jamrs O'Brien's, I love the respect you show your guest in regards to the deeply researched understanding of their past.... and how wonderful to hear from James Blunt, clearly intelligent, caring, articulate, thoughtful and beautiful. What an engaging discussion
Having grown up in an era when James Blunt songs were popular, and signing them so intently due to their popularity rather than substance, to growing older and understanding the lyrics and the meaning behind them and learning to regard them in an entirely new light, i cannot help but listen to listen to more and more interviews with this man and treasure him for everything he is - A soldier, a musician, a father, a husband, a son and a truly decent human being who i wish more and more success upon with every adventure he brings us on. Remember James, never accept criticism from someone from whom you would not accept advice.
Have seen James play in Dublin twice. Isn’t he just such an interesting , intelligent , funny , loving human being ? Face the sun (like Kirsty Macoll’s Dear John) is so sad but brilliant. Helped me.
I was never into James Blunt to be honest... but this excellent interview makes me want to check him out. And I will! Well done indeed JO'B!! Highly enjoyable conversation that was well worth my time and interest. Thank you so much!💗 Cheers from Canada😊
The problem with James Blunt is after listening to one of his songs l feel like he's driven his tank over my heart. Brilliant songs, but when you listen to songs of his like 'Monsters' you need a bucket in order to keep your tears from soaking the carpet.
2 of my favorite people in the world, I wish James Blunt would talk more about his military service and the fate of many veterans who experience struggles when returning into society. When that idiot shadow of a shadow of a culture secretary called him privileged, he did not get that we are the privileged ones to hear his songs. And I will never get the haters of the You are beautiful song, if you do not like it move on.
Honestly, I wasn’t a fan until I saw him on Buzzcocks ages ago. I think he’s hilarious and really charming. (And I like a lot of his non-You’re Beautiful music.)
For no particular reason I have never found myself to be a fan of James.O' Brien. I tuned in because of James Blunt. However, I have toi say this was a brilliantly conducted interview. Knowledgeable, thoughtful, respectful. Subtley coherent, in it's alllowence for james to speak freely whilst keep to it's objectives. Especially when gently trying to breakthrough Jame's self deprecation in an effort for him to take credit for who he is and what he has achieved. No mean feat. Beautiful. Thank you :)
I’ve been following James from the beginning and he still impresses me. For those of you who don’t care for his music, try to go to one of his concerts. I promise you will come away with a different impression.
I love James Blunt, and his music, ever since You're Beautiful. And I adore his humour, the way he sends himself up. Such a well balanced individual. I totally identify with writing as catharsis. Poetry in my case but yes, it's a way of offloading,
Great interview and I was thinking about what James says about conviction, knowing that you’ve got something valuable to say and being confident about it. As an artist who is a woman who has always felt this, that has not worked for me! As Emily Dickinson wrote ‘I dwell in possibility’ I still do but at nearly 65 it’s wearing a bit thin!
I cannot stand you’re beautiful, which put me off Blunt… in fact so much so that when I saw he will be performing in a small, beautiful venue in Madrid this summer, I wondered wait, does he have more than one song? He in fact does seem like a real decent human being, so thanks JOB.
Had a friend when based in RAF, Rhineland, Germany, 1980's - said f'k your English public schools, he's going to the local German senior school. Kid now works for BMW high up, now speaks at least seven languages, including German and Welsh.
It's a scary world we live in. Almost everyone is scraping by, and and working hard just o survive. A lot people seem to have this bitterness towards anyone who they think has an advantage over them; be it looks, intelligence, or social status. It angers them that life is so unfair. But it's not anyone's fault that they were born pretty, or smart, or into a well-to-do family. It's a scary world, so why shouldn't they use every tool they have to survive? If you really have to judge someone, then judge their character and what they bring into the world. Are they caring human beings? Knocking someone down because they're born with an advantage isn't going to help you. Honestly, even if they give you their job, you wouldn't be able to do it. The kind of person who could pull it off, wouldn't be complaining about other hard working human beings.
Exactly! Well said! Roughly 1% of all talented musicians managed to become successful with it. James has achieved that through his enormous talent. His family is from military background. They had no connections in the music industry so James had to work really hard to achieve his dreams and he did. Musicians like Taylor Swift were also born really privileged and had way more support but no one is bothered by that so why are they hating on James? There is a saying that goes: No one that has achieved more than you will ever put you down. All the haters are just jealous of him. And even if his family had an influence, so what? No one decides what family they were born into.
So interesting to hear almost my exact childhood described. Never got to Hong Kong and dad was an NCO but, yeah, pretty similar up until boarding school - mum wasn't having that. I sound nothing like JB though, of course and weirdly, i think BECAUSE i carried on moving often and having to fit in asap in new schools, i totally could fake an accent (any accent but Welsh in fact) with no trouble whatsoever. Haha.
Not liking James Blunt's music is one thing and could be rationalized but, how anyone can hate James Blunt the Man is beyond my comprehension. Maybe jealousy somehow? I don't know.
James's misunderstanding that "Pat brats" had a hard time is ridiculous. I was a forces brat and loved the travel. Different countries and meeting far more interesting people than James.
He came from my Village "St. Mary Bourne" in Hampshire. His parents still live here and he turns up every now and then. Edit. - I typed this message before listening to the podcast. He actually mentions the local town "Andover" when joking about spending money on slot machines.
