I was printing in my darkroom the night WNYC broadcast this whole session. I was dumb struck by Reed, P.J. Harvey, William Boroughs… all live. Being a New Yorker is fucking amazing!
I would say objectively that this is one of the greatest performances/recordings of any musical genre in history... Weill should be honored that Reed approached his inspiration with so much artistry
It is so great the way he captures the rhythm of the tune . He de-constructs the melody amazingly. This is a totally amazing approach to that Song. My favorite is SARAH VAUGHAN'S a polar opposite to Lou REED'S interpretation! 😊 THANKS SO MUCH FOR SHARING ANYWAY!!!
Only every vocalist in the world has covered this musical jem from all those years ago. Jeff Lynne brought it home on Arm Chair Theater. Then along came Lou - talk about the only cover that compliments the original to an extreme. Very cool.
Very much agree but he has so many good songs. he's a big influence on my own songs too. I love the "Berlin" album. But on the same token, i love love the "White Light White Heat" album with the Velvet Underground. This is a great song though.
This a version that didn't make to the album, but a much bouncier version did. After having listened for that version for 30 or so years, this is a revelation.
It would be just an okay cover, but at 2:45 the intensity of the band and the music and everything clicks perfectly, it made the song quite good for me.
This isn't the version from the Lost in the Stars album I used to have. He played a much more upbeat version and I can't find it anywhere. It's so frustrating because it was such a good song...
Well, it depends whether you want a faster, more upbeat 1985 Reed sound or a more langourous, sensuous, 1994 Reed sound... both are great. But then, most things by Lou Reed are...
as i watched, i became irritated with the liberties reed had taken with one of my favorite songs. but the dread he works up in the chorus won me over. a classic reinterpretation i think.
@slessorpr any version would make this look lame. lou reed if tone deaf and should be banned from singing altogether...especially other people's songs.
Just goes to show some ppl will sing anything 4 money. Is Lou already dead or just thinking abt it.? I love this song and Kurt Weill and I have seen it done by many different artists. Look at Jeff Lynne's version and he makes Lou look lame. What more can I say?
this is a very good version of "September Song " thank you Lou Reed... Rip..
a goodie

Rest In Peace Lou Reed. And thanks for this version of this song.
Absolutely brilliant . Who would have thought?
I would say objectively that this is one of the greatest performances/recordings of any musical genre in history... Weill should be honored that Reed approached his inspiration with so much artistry
I agree
I grew up listening to Lou Reed, This version is Heart wrenching. Gone but not Forgotten Lou☮💜🍌
This song starts laid back, but builds up intensity. Lou's guitar solo is gorgeous!

Climax and solo beautiful
Qué maravilla, una joya, grande Lou!!
May God rest his beautiful soul.
Yes - it is the great Greg Cohen... who is also a wonderful guy as well as superb bass player.
BEST EVER COVER OF WEILL'S MASTERPIECE!
THANKS LOU OF MY ADOLESCENCE
FOR COMFORTING ME THROUGH MIDDLE AGE :)
Jimmy Durante also superb - sure Lou heard it. Both GREAT covers in their own right -- 100
One of his best...thanks, very moving
Godspeed, Lou. You changed music forever.
As did Mr. Wieill I might add too my friend.
searching for this for years...
thanks
Lou Reed knows: less is more!
it's the music as much as Lou Reed's almost-deadpan voice which makes this such a very satisfying version of a lovely song
Only every vocalist in the world has covered this musical jem from all those years ago. Jeff Lynne brought it home on Arm Chair Theater. Then along came Lou - talk about the only cover that compliments the original to an extreme. Very cool.
Speechless .....
Love it. Especially the climax.
take a walk on the weill side!
You deserve an award for this comment! It's very funnay and witty. KUDOS!!!!
Right on the button. Perfect timing and diction.
People bla bla bla and criticize in their comments... Lou just does HIS stuff w great musicians...and it WORKS!
The late GREAT Lou Reed -- 100
Покойся с миром, Лу. Прекрасное исполнение. Финал выносит мозг.
Lou is great
@Eivob LOVE IT!!! Big Weill fan here, so I'm stealing that...:)
nice tempo, super nice
Here we go again :)

This is a great song though.
Sublime!!

Ate Sempre Lou
Oh yeah.
Certainly a very different take on this standard! But highly reflective of Lou Reed's own personality and an important contribution.
I haven't got it. It might be from an album named: "Lost In The Stars: The Music of Kurt Weill", but I'm not sure.
This a version that didn't make to the album, but a much bouncier version did. After having listened for that version for 30 or so years, this is a revelation.
obrigado. muito obrigado.
Danny Frankel on drums!!!
Quelle beauté !
It would be just an okay cover, but at 2:45 the intensity of the band and the music and everything clicks perfectly, it made the song quite good for me.
@fanofprotopic I have to agree. As much as I like Lou Reed's earlier cover, this would be better just as a blues instrumental.
This isn't the version from the Lost in the Stars album I used to have. He played a much more upbeat version and I can't find it anywhere. It's so frustrating because it was such a good song...
DaithiDublin It's on TH-cam again. Search!

Respond to this video... Amazing Cover!
Louuuuu
Maxwell Anderson wrote the lyrics - give the guy some credit
Hoss Hoskins YOU ARE REALLY RIGHT SO MANY LYRICISTS ARE REALLY UNDERRATED!
It's Greg Cohen on the upright bass, ins't it?
Kurt Weill/ Maxwell Anderson
an outstandig version of weill's song.
History does seem to rhyme, doesn't it?
is that greg cohen on DB?
hv u got a link?
i don't think it's boring
I kinda dug the more funk version he did - but I'll take this as a real statement. Best ever, however is Jimmy Durante, and I bet Lou would agree.
@gadflyonthewall001
No it´s not John Cale and it´s not the Velvets
as i watched, i became irritated with the liberties reed had taken with one of my favorite songs. but the dread he works up in the chorus won me over. a classic reinterpretation i think.
Nice song. One can sing great tunes without high pitch screaming.
how can we find the lyrics here ? they are different to the ones on the net ...
Not Hard to see where Radio Head got some dark influences
no its some other cat, though the patchy video quality kinda make him look like it...and the other guitarist like eric clapton sporting a beard.
teehee :)
Cuffing season
the fingers at 3:58 do not belong to that bass player......
how does this work ??????
Danny Frankel
Sure! And that is not Moe Tucker on drums. Lol!
Reeds version on the Weill tribute album is vastly superior to this.
wow, this is NOTHING like the album version which I prefer
@themattster1991 troll
That is not John Cale on Bass.
ohhh nooo!! i already know the lyrics sing them sing the M-E-L-O-D-Y lol man that song is ruined now
this isn't NEARLY as good as the cover of the song Reed did on the "Lost in the Stars" WEill tribute album
sad demonstration of demolition of a melody
@slessorpr any version would make this look lame. lou reed if tone deaf and should be banned from singing altogether...especially other people's songs.

This is as bad as William Shatner.
This is soooooooooooo crappy.
