You can see it taking shape beautifully… so looking forward to your windows going in…the boys are so good the way they wait for those words…’time for a walk boys’ and up they jump… have a good wkend Andy ❤
You're right to feel pride in your neatly regular wall Andy - well done mate. I'm always interested to see different approaches in different areas. I've not seen rebar used between courses like that - is this common in Portugal? OTOH I was expecting you to install a DPM and bond the skins together with stainless steel wall ties with spacers to hold the batts of insulation tight against one skin (to avoid any risk of water tracking across). Aren't they common practice where you are? Good luck with the ongoing work - looks *very* warm 🥵
As for cold showers. My mum used to place a number of buckets full of water in the sun. And by the time my dad came home he could wash and rinse himself with deliciously lukewarm water. Those were happy moments for the three of us.
Looking good! This type of work is nice, as you can see the progress directly. Thank you for chronicling your journey. That last shot - It looked like you were enjoying a soak while watching the beautiful sunset. What a well-deserved ending to the day. All the best!
As a so called retired bricklayer, your doing a good job. Like you I'm a workaholic, I live in Thailand so our heat is comparable to yours, but we have very high humidity. I'm close to 73 and in November I start my next project, laying 1,500 of those blocks 😊. But I have the advantage of having a wife that is quite happy mixing all my concrete and morter. Build on. Forgot to add, here in Thailand it's very rare to see a cement mixer in action, they all use large plastic mixing tubs using a large hoe, hard work for anyone.
@christopherpalmer4243 yes it seems so. I lived in Egypt for 17 years, mid 40s to over 50° in some years, lived with those temperatures no problem, but high humidity is a killer. Moved to Thailand januery this year.
Very nice progress for the week. Masonry is hard, heavy and hot work. It looks like it will be a very pleasant room with lots of light and the "bonus" area you found under the stairs will make it even better. I'm curious if the roof over the new room will be flat or slightly sloped for water runoff? Keep it up, looking great!
Looking good, great progress. Watching all your hard work is great inspiration for me, as I await better weather for my next projects. I know exactly what you are experiencing with heat depletion and physical tasks, after living and working in Brisbane. 👍🔨
I found a lovely little trowel in the cavity, probably last seen in around 1865 to 1870. Rusted up but cleaned up lovely. Still think of the old uns to this day.
Congratulations! Love being on this journey with you. 😊 I missed what that room is going to be. Looks nice and big bit appropriate to the rest if the house.
Great progress Andrew, you are saving a ton of money DIYing, and I guess the only drawback is how long it takes when you tackle such an extensive project by yourself for the most part, as I know you've had help here and there, but still I've been watching for months and you still have a long way to go, anyway I really enjoy seeing your tenacity and determination as it all comes together slowly but surely, Kudos Amigo.....Javi G.
Hi Andy. I’ve just been watching video #171 for the sixth time since publication and have to say it is great to see and hear your enjoyment of your project growing in spite of all the setbacks you have had. I find myself because of your own enjoyment becoming ever more impatient for the next episode so I can join in the advancement of your home’s construction. Terrific work Andrew. Cheers, Steve D. UK
I certainly had no idea how a cinder block wall was made. Definitely learned something watching you put yours together! It looks really good! Keep plugginh away, Andy, Eventually, you'll have your house all done!
@@blondguy It seems I got my wires crossed, which is very fortunate 🤣Great to hear all is well! Early 30's sounds very nice, we are 16 at 10am in Auckland ... a cold snap.
Big fan of the channel and about to move to Portugal. As you always say the vids you post is about your journey and not so much about a How to, somehow you show all of How to but not so much of the journey. What we get to see is a building project. Would like to see a day in the life vid. From waking up to going to bed. How is your position in the community? Meeting people? You cant be al work and no play.🎉
Well, you managed to make cinder block laying fun to watch. Sometimes we need to challenge ourselves and have fun with a project which you did. Your unfinished walls even look beautiful.
With block laying Andrew one should not lay more than 7 courses in a day due to settling just a point to note. Great days work and a fine looking wall at the end of the day you done really well.
Good Morning Andrew, good boy dogos, and good followers of Real Algarve Living. It's 61F/16C here in New Mexico. Congrats, your recorded best 0f 27 minutes per course/row. Set your mind, focus, go-go.
Oh well, my arrogance cannot be underestimated or suppressed. Back in the 70s I used to clean out the mixer with an empty cement bag, a few stones and water. Turn on the mixer and “Bob s your uncle”. Good work Andy. All is “straight “ when level and plum and flush. 👍👍👍
I subscribed after watching the courageous restoration of the village house (ruin),I'm a very critical person when it comes to subscribing, still happy with the work you do.
Well done Andrew on the completion of your job list for this week. The wall looks stunning!!! Very entertaining as ever. The vista from the extension is amazing !!! Just concerned about footwear used (flip flops …. Really?). I’d love to be there to make sure you eat and drink plenty of nutritious food and drinks.
Well you’ve had a great week. Got so much done. Keep up the good work mate. Really enjoyed this weeks video, you’re making real progress now . Well done 😊😊
Superb job as usual but please wear a mask when cutting concrete. Silica dust is not good at all and usually effects you years later. Keep up the great work.
Congrats on 100K subscribers. Keep up the good work and you'll have the house you want to live in that you've built yourself. Pretty fantastic place to live in the scheme of things. The UK is not what it used to be, so keep the faith and see the project through to the end.
I admire you so much for your solo determination to tackle big projects. At the same time, can't help but think, "Damn. If he just had another person there helping..." I've landscaped my backyard extensively with my daughter's help, without which I wouldn't have had the ability to do it. I applaud all DIY approaches to life, and envy your sweet lifestyle there. Kudos, Andy. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.
I still love the giraffe. U sure u want to send it back to the savanna? Curious that you don’t seem to need to tie the pillars to the adjacent walls?? Maybe that happens across the top. Well done on the wall.
Hey, it's his feet. If he wants to take the chance on f'ing one, or both of them up, that's on him. I truly hope that he doesn't; I really enjoy his videos.

Just passed through Lagos this weekend with my wife and kids! Beautiful town and views. Enjoyed the beaches north of Sagres too. Thanks for inspiring the trip🙏🏼
Great progress Andy! Love the end shots. See you next week.

You’ve got every right to be proud of it Andrew. Good bit of block work there mate
What a back breaking job! When you are finished, your concrete buckets should be bronzed and placed in a prominent place.
Carry on!!!
The wall looks great, Andrew! And your pups are just so sweet. I always look forward to seeing them romping around your property.
Yes 🎉Andy time 😂

Is there a reason why you cut the insulation instead of turning it sideways and interlocking each whole sheet?

Hey Andy. Just to point out if your creating a cavity you need to put ties in (brick ties). Keep up the amazing work. I watch you all the time from NZ
Besser block walls need no ties if built within limited dimension.
I would have gone with drywall and more insulation for the extension
Great video, you’re a quick learner.
