Also, that’s exactly how I grow fruits - I gather moldy fruit and just toss them into an area in my yard and wait to see what grows. Usually the animals get them, but I have a 12 foot tall apple tree from this method. she’s still young - only about 3 years old, and she had a rough start at life because she caught some disease that made my dad have to cut her down, but she sprouted a healthy branch and is budding right now, and I have mason bees about 5 feet away so they can pollinate. I have only seen 1 honey bee in my yard because someone down the street keeps them, but I haven’t had much luck in the past. My fingers are crossed. I can’t keep bees because kids are always playing outside less than 100 feet away from my yard in my neighborhood, and I’m afraid that one of them is allergic and might die if they get stung in some freak accident, so I try to minimize that risk.
I live in the Philippines, our weather makes that tomato magic in our backyard too. We throw seeds in our front yard and voila,tomatoes are growing and bearing fruits.
My Uncles who grew up in Italy always grew Great Tomatoes &Peppers Never heard of using any Heat Mats or any Growing Lights he said just started them in his kitchen Window sill with full sun then trans planted them right into his Garden, Always had the biggest juciest Tomatoes & Peppers, The point I am making is about using Heat Mats and growing lights which run into some expensive Bucks And they do not have to be used etc. Thanks for sharing etc
Depends on how many you need and what your uses are. When I started 9 years ago, I used my kitchen window sill as well. Worked perfectly. Fast forward to now, where I have 32 nursery trays dedicated to JUST tomatoes... And just seedlings. That tray # balloons to the hundreds when the tomatoes get moved on to 4" pots. I'd love to have a window sill large enough to grow them all, lol. What works for one person doesn't mean everyone should make that work.
Agreed I never used heat mats either but I lived in warm climates such as California and Florida. Heat mats are good for people who live in Canada for example.

I followed another video on here asking the same question. What I did was remove the seeds from a ripened tomato, separating them from the pulp and that gooey part as much as possible, but it's best to leave some of that pulp on them for the next part. Then you put the seeds in a container with water and close the container with a coffee filter or paper towel on top. Let the seeds ferment someplace out of direct sunlight for 3-5 days. The water should turn a little murky and even have a white mold sprout on top which shows the fermentation process is working. Then transfer the fermented seeds to tepid/warm water and let them separate out. The bad seeds and all the pulp and mold will float to the top, and the viable seeds will sink to the bottom of the container. Strain them out and lay out the seeds on a sheet of paper towel or a plate to dry. They'll have sprouted little "hairs" all over them, which will help them take root. Let them dry out completely for a few days and then put them in an envelope for next spring!
Not sure if you would respond to this, but if I used older potting soil that had questionable things in it and put new potting soil on top (in a pot, not a garden bed), should I be worried about "disease contaminates"? I don't have a garden, I just want to grow them in a 12 inch pot.

Due to sheer numbers of seeds they can afford only a fraction of the seeds to take a good hold. You could just plant them outside if your climate supports a long enough growing season, but carefully controlling the environment during this state of development helps to improve the odds a seed will become a healthy crop.
In the gulf coast area near Houston we don't have a 6 week window of warm weather before it's time to plant. If you wait too late to plant, they won't produce because they will burn up. This might work in some parts of the country, but not in others.

When i plant my tomatos i add egg shells to the hole along with a small hand full of Epsom salt& slow release fertilizer.I planted 110 tomato plants and picked only 1 tomato all summer/fall that had blossom end rot.
Or you can just plant the seeds and then when they get to about 3-4 feet tall or start to vine put a pole in the soil and tie the vine to the pole. Simple.
You can take one of the seedlings and transplant to another cell or to soil. All of them might not survive but you get more without removing half of them
You tear the roots and injure the seedlings trying to separate them. Also, because mature plants are supposed to be spaced at least 2 feet apart, one packet of seeds often has more than 2 or 3 times as many plants as most people fit in your garden. This is compounded when you are growing 3 or 4 varieties. The limiting factor is not how many seeds you have. It's how much space you have under the lights and how much time you have before outdoor-planting time. If you don't double up you will waste that limited space on empty pots, and by the time you realize it, you don't get those weeks back.

Have you ever tried a product called Spray N Grow? It is absolutely amazing - all organic and is applied to the stems and leaves of the plant to feed them. Any plant that I use Spray N Grow on, whether it is a flowering plant, vegetable, or even trees, they show immediate growth and if it is a vegetable, will produce many times the amount of fruit that they normally would. Several years ago we had an evergreen bush that was about thigh - waist high and was attacked by the orangey rust (perhaps spruce needle rust but I am not sure) that evergreens sometimes get. We were about to grub the bush out and plant another one when I decided to try Spray N Grow first to see what it would do. Amazingly it began to change in the first week, and by the end of that season the bush had been completely "healed." It is now as high as my shoulders and has been very healthy year after year. I am in no way connected to their company (out of Texas) but just thought you might like to look Spray N Grow up and see what you think. I believe you will be as amazed as we are if you try it. You can start seeds outside as long as day and nighttime temperatures stay over 50 degrees Fahrenheit. You may need to shuffle plants in and out during early spring to keep them warm. A sunny window would be best during the times it gets below 50 degrees.

hmm in my country philippines, were in a hurry and have no access of commerciql seedling trays or. its costly, we just squeeze the tomatoe fruit popping all seeds in one. container... cover with soil, it all sprouts and plant on the ground individually.. simple. as that
