A very nice yet sad movie. Lum Kah Seng was so handsome in this movie as his face not so skinny. I ❤ the little boy who played his brother...such a talented young actor.

Such beautiful, heart-bearing honesty and poignancy, much appreciated. Yes indeed, there are parents who suffer much for the love of their offspring given their innate sense of parental responsibility despite great financial hardships. They are the unsung heroes through the ages. Filial children are the heavenly-mandated rewards. Now compare what William Shakespeare observed centuries ago : "How sharper than a serpent's tooth it is to have a thankless child!"
"Fu mu en Sheng wan jin
      Chun hui cun cao xin
Tui qin song nuan Shi du qing shen"
"Fu Mu En" - Samuel Hui
      Thanks.

When every single viewer's comments/review on YT of a particular movie weighs on the side of unreserved approbation, it does make one sit up and take notice, wonder, and post-viewing, to ponder and evaluate the claims' veracity. Especially when the film is considered "one of the best HK films of all time" by critics/cinema historians. Hmm...I'm wholly obliged already to add to the clamour of acclamation here as it is.
    1) One yardstick of a film's engagement with/acceptance by the (paying) audience is its relatability. And the main thread of emotional tugging and resonance here in this movie's script is the unbearable poverty of being. It is sometimes nobly proclaimed that "suffering/deprivation is good for the soul". Well, it is far easier to sit, with a full stomach, to pontificate and asseverate; it is quite another matter to suffer the travails of hunger and constant, devastating worries of the next job assignment and piecemeal remuneration. Hunger pangs certainly enervate the body. So, does it always uplift the spirit?
    2) This movie was made in 1955, at a time when the undeniable harms of smoking were not fully medically established yet. So, even as the purse is void of dollar notes/coins, we have the chief protagonist (Ma Sze Zeng) burning his few remaining pennies on cigarettes, aggravating his physical well-being and waning respiratory fitness/singing vocal cords and failing to executed his operatic, acrobatic moves, necessitating critical hospitalised care. What a vicious circle to be trapped in. Poor health is indisputably a major setback in life surely!
    3) Are three meals a day a mandate from Heaven? Solid clinical experiments have proven beyond doubt that it's but a social/cultural construct. Innumerable people since time immemorial have survived and thrived on but two meals daily. Especially for sedentary/obese individuals, sensible caloric intake/reduction must form part of an integral/holistic weight loss regime.
    4) The scene where the younger son of Sze Zeng proclaims excitedly each time his father comes home past midnight from work because supper was likely to be had really hitss home for me poignantly. Back during my boyhood years, residing at the long-demolished Queen's Crescent rental housing estate (Queenstown, Singapore) my late father, a coffee shop cook then, would return home around 12.45 am too. And yes, on occasions with supper (excess/unsold fried noodles/rice. What a treat it was always . Father's love. You have to cry for the kids orphaned at a young age, truly.
This movie hurts so bad that it is paradoxically good for the soul.
    5) The young boy's acting instincts - on a par with the legendary Fung Bo Bo?
    6) Wong Man Lei's top notch portrayal as the grief-laden and conflicted wife and mother just adds to her marvellous career's curriculum vitae. Par for the course, ain't it? (More than once in different outings including this film and the iconic "Brothers" tv drama series (Chow Yun Fat/Carol Cheng) she let it be known her real-life deprivations and depredations during the Japanese invasion of HK in WW2, including of course severe hunger pangs leading to gastric ailments). Raised in poverty, married poor. How many of todamodern young girls in comfortable financial straits will ever place "suffering/deprivation is good for the soul" over material comforts and security?
    7) That family portrait/photo hanging in the living room of their modestly furnished abode - the poses are just picture perfect!
    8) Ma Sze Zeng's visceral reluctance to allow his younger son to take up apprenticeship in opera training so as not to suffer his own fate - actually times have changed for sure. Today's aspiring artistes, even for young prodigies, must meet minimum academic curriculum standards in tandem with their chosen field of artistic pursuit. That's a wholly heartening development especially when one recalls how precocious child talents Josephine Siew Fong Fong and Fung Bo Bo both made the life-changing decision to put their acting career on hold so as to receive a proper/legitimate if belated formal schooling, before resuming their screen credits.
    9) Last point. Today's chinese operatic stage shows (especially in classical dialects) are hard pressed to fined a youthful audience,at least in Singapore definitely (where Chinese dialects have been subsumed by the government's "Speak Mandarin Campaign" instituted in 1979). Even among the much older seniors, numbers swindling fast, during the 7th Lunar month "Hungry Ghost Festival" ("Zhong Yuan Jie") the audience barely reaches a mere handful. Pathetic! Instead, its modern iteration of sexily-costumed singers, comedians, dancers and master-of-ceremony have taken over, belting out contemporary pop ditties to appease the wandering spirits. It's hard reality. Sigh....the price of progress....Thanks.
