    I think airlines should run an "airplane etiquette" video right after the safety video so that people are aware of what's expected and what will be tolerated.

      This is actually in the works. If I read correctly, there’s a US airline currently working to implement such a thing at the end of their safety video.

      The service is bad enough without being told how to behave. If you haven't learned how to behave before getting on a plane you're not going to learn from a video.

    Etiquette: even if the seatbelt sign just turned off at the gate... stay seated until your row exits

    When the airlines started cutting back on meals and even charging for them I started bringing my food aboard. I am uncomfortable eating in front of people who aren't eating or didn't bring any food with them. I decided to start stopping by a supermarket for sandwiches, fruit and snacks before I got to the airport. The selection is much better and the prices are reasonable compared to the shops in the airport. I always make sure to get enough provisions to share with my seatmate. Most supermarkets have complimentary packets of utensils, condiments and napkins which are quite useful. I found most seatmates automatically refused my offer of food until I showed them that I had extra just for them! It is amazing to see a person's attitude change immediately when one is kind to them. I have met some fascinating people on flights just by doing this simple thing. If they don't want it, fine. I get teased by my friends for doing this. They think it's so weird. Actually, I enjoy doing this and it makes my flights much more pleasant.

    I constantly face issues with #1. I was recently on a daytime flight over a beautiful mountain range, but the airline decided it wanted nighttime in the cabin. I was asked to close the window by cabin crew. There is no one-size-fits-all answer. If people are sleeping, I tend to close the shade and open it every 5 minutes to take my videos. Good job covering these important topics! 👏🏼

  • @DavidMudge

    Got asked to put my window shades down at night so people could sleep. It was pitch black out! Putting the shade down would have made no difference! I explained I like to look out but was told there's nothing to see. Yes there is. I like to see lights of big cities as we fly over them! Also being able to see out helps me with the claustrophobic feelings I get. I requested a window seat for a reason. I want to look out! Needless to say my window shade remained open. I take the view that you're in an airplane and a very public space so you need to put up with everyone else. Having comforts in a tight space simply isn't an option unless you can afford business or first. For that reason I never complain about people reclining or babies crying it comes with the territory

    • @Jsb078
      @Jsb078 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      David Mudge I agree with this. The night time is nice to look out over the lights of the city and keep a reminder that your in the air. But if your on the red eye and the sun comes up and your blinding the cabin with sunlight then respectfully put it down.

      People who ask for a window seat then pull the blind down so that even the person next to them can't see out should be automatically banned from window seats, just like crew members who shut down the blinds all over the plane on 787s..they should be banned from the control that does it...

    • @purplephantom1182
      @purplephantom1182 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@romer1816 I prefer the window seat to be away from the aisle traffic and to make it easy for those who need to get up to stretch their legs or go to the restroom. I am perfectly content with staying in my window seat the entire flight, but I like the shade down as it's just too bright for me. So you think I should be automatically banned? If having the shade up is that important to you, I suggest that you book a window seat for yourself. Problem solved!

    Jeb. Amigo! First off great editing on this vid. Chicken if the sea anyone :) 1. Window seat owns the shade...except takeoff and landing (have some courtesy people!) 2. Armrest...agreed that middle seat gets more real estate 3. Recline...if it’s less than 2 hours and a daytime flight I don’t like it. Most are doing work or watching a show so let it go for short daytime flights and take advantage on long haul or evening flights 4. Ok with food on the plane but to your point think about the smell. Sometimes if your rushing thru an airport for evening biz flights a grab and go to take on board is the only way.
    Keep up the great work Jeb.

  • @PaulStewartAviation
    @PaulStewartAviation 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    1. I agree - the window seat owns them but you need to be aware of what everyone else is doing. As long as at least one other window is open, I'll usually keep mine open or partially open unless I too plan to sleep.
    2. Yep, the middle person doesn't have the window or direct aisle access so they should get at least one perk.
    3. Agree about the recline. RIP my laptop.
    4. haha @Dennisbunnicktravels! I might say hello and then see how they reply. If they give a single word response, I leave it at that. But if they ask a complicated question in return, (Ie "travelling for work or fun?") then I might engage in a chat.
    5. I've never really thought about this but I guess it's best to avoid particularly noxious foods.

    I agree 1000% with your thoughts.
    When I am in window, I will glance around once in awhile to see if there is a glare hitting someone or something. What really irks me is when a window pax has the shade down the whole time. But I think, well, it is their window.
    When I recline a seat, I usually look before departure if someone is there, but I hit button and ever so slowly go back. If there is someone there, I will look back just prior to recline as to give a sort of indication that is may be coming...

  • @keyonastring

    1. Window seat owns the window, but be courteous of others, especially if someone specifically asks to you close it. (My vote is always down, and I fly almost every week)
    2. Agree. With 3 seats, center seat gets both the arm rests.
    3. Slowly recline, you own that recline, even at meal time.
    4. Don't talk, you are disrupting everyone for 2-3 rows in every direction that want to sleep or read.
    5. 100% agree, you're stuck in a metal tube in the sky. Avoid foods that would be disruptive.

  • @STOCathain

    I saw an argument break out on a transatlantic flight on Monday when a passenger 2 rows in front of me reclined their seat very fast, really frustrating the passenger sitting behind them in the row in front of me. On this particular plane (Lufthansa A350-900) the screens in economy were already a bit too close to our faces for comfort, I had the brightness on mine turned very far down for most of the flight, so I could understand the passenger closest to me getting annoyed with the one in front of them for reclining so fast. I usually will check to see what the passenger sitting behind me is doing before I recline my seat. If they're sleeping, then it's okay. If they're reading or watching something on the seat-back screen, then I'll keep my seat more upright. It's all about treating the other people on board the way you'd want to be treated.

    I love this video. Such good points that I always think about. I agree with everything you said!!
    My biggest annoyance on a plane is when it’s dark in the cabin and people have the overhead light on. Obviously it is there light but I find that light usually to be too bright and spills over into the passengers around them.

  • @marriedGary
    @marriedGary 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think all are good and agree with you Jeb. However, when it comes to the seat, I tend to think that on a short haul flight, reclining the seat is uncalled for, unless its a super early morning or late night. Generally, not being a jerk is the number one priority that helps wade through what's good and not good.

    These were excellent points all frequent fliers encounter. Inappropriate seat recline is my pet peeve...please be courteous always and just let the passenger behind know you that you are about to or would like to recline. As a rule, I never recline my seat. Also, not mentioned here is those that fly and feel the need to remove their shoes. Along those lines, it also always amazes me, the amount of people that travel in flip flops. Thanks for the great video.

    As a fellow window seat enthusiast, I agree with your views about owning the window, but a few years back on a Cathay Pacific night flight from LA to Hong Kong the flight attendants would not allow me to lift the shade to briefly view the artic sea ice below. It was dark outside and I didn't see how it was an issue, but respectfully chose not to argue with the flight attendant.

  • @kladpapier
    @kladpapier 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you're sitting in the window seat, the shade is yours to control. Now I wouldn't mind lowering it if it was really bothering the person next to me.
    I don't use armrests much, so if the person next to me wants them, they get them.
    When reclining I give a little warning, and once I'm comfortable I ask the person behind me if it's ok for them too.
    I don't mind interaction, but I'm a rather shy guy, so I'll never be the first one to talk. However if I want to watch a movie or listen to some music or whatever, I'll politely say so and put an end to the conversation.
    As for the food I agree with you.

    After the meal service, I always check behind me to see if the passenger behind still has their tray of food. A few minutes after the FA takes their tray, that’s when I go back into a recline. I’d hate to be the one that causes a spill.

    Love this video! My caveat about the shades are that they should be UP during takeoff and landing. Especially if I’m going to a new place and couldn’t get a window, I want to see us landing!
    Talking beyond a causal hello is a big no-no.
    Another big dilemma is seat switching. “Hey I really want to be next to my friend do you mind switching?” Um yes. You do realize that the ability to choose your seat costs extra? I’m not switching, and i prefer not to be asked.
    On a red eye from the west coast and literally offered me $100 for my premium economy window seat. No! I wanted to relax and sleep. If I didn’t, I wouldn’t have paid extra. Just stop asking.

    I only take around 15 flights a year, but here goes;
    #1 Blinds - If you are in the window seat you ultimately have control, but I try to be mindful and respectful of other passengers.
    #2 Arm rests - I've not really had many issues, although once I had someone next to me who was quite large, and it was their tummy/sides that rested on the armrest.
    #3 Recline - I dont mind as long as its done respectfully and not during meal times
    #4 Talking - Im quite socialable and at times its welcome. on a recent MUC-JNB flight I got talking to a guy that worked for BMW SA, and we had a decent chat and a few drinks.
    #5 Food - As long as it smells nice its fine.... no stinky cheese!

    I agree with most of your suggestions and comments; be polite is the bottom line ! As for the talkie , being a friendly type myself I always say hello as I settle in ( or as they sit down) and you can usually tell by the body language whether this person wishes to interact or not; other passengers using this tactic on me will have an easy read. These are definite dos and donts of flying. I think some people lack the flying etiquette, because they are so nervous about flying that they take it out on everyone else. Then again, if a person is rude on the ground, 40K feet in the sky won't help their attitude. Great video.

    Window shades up at all times during takeoff and landing. Inflight; down during the day, up during the night. The thing I like to do is use the flight tracker to know when interesting sights are coming, then crack the shade open just enough to peak down. But it's amazing how disruptive it can be when all other shades are down.

    In a previous life, Canadian Airlines had a Honolulu to Toronto flight that left at roughly midnight and landed at rougjhly 14::30 in Toronto. (~9.5 hours)
    Upon departing, crew asked everyone to close blinds and keep them closed. The cabin was kept dark till about 2 hours before landing at which point lights, on shades up and bright afterenoon sun came in. Keeping cabin dark allowd good sleep during 8 hour flight despite sun rising a few hours after take off. Once, someone lifted shade and woke everyone up as bright sunshiine got into cabin.
    For daytime flights, if I struggle to have window seat, it is because I want to look out, so I don't appreciate being told to keep blind shut (or flight sttendants force all blinds shut on 787s).
    More recently, on AC SYD-YVR, after takeoff at about 10:30, they served lunch then suddently asked to lower all blinds and sleep when it was still morning on our morning clocks. I did not appreciate that, and missed the picture perfect subset over the pacific. It is unfortunate that one cannot get an idea of the service type and expected sleep cycle for a specific flight as it would allow one to prepare for it.

    About the window shades, I prefer to keep them open for the same reasons as you but I also try to be considerate. However, on some airlines the cabin crew orders you to close them, and you are supposed to follow all crew's instructions.
    Reclining: not sooner than after meal service and I do it in small increments. I also discretely estimate the persons size in the seat behind me. If it's a small person I don't feel guilty ;)

    I think you pretty much nailed it. Interaction with your neighbour? - a smile of acknowledgement when you get to your seat and or a thanks if they have to move..... Smelly food - Don't! - Armrests - yea agree (it also works for cinema seating as well, if your drink is in the cup holder that armrest's yours). Window blinds - be sensitive to sleeping passengers plus often no need for the shade to be fully open during flight anyway....Aggressive reclining - I dont recline during meal service but always recline slowly (and with 'due diligence) telegraphing my moves... Im like a mime reclining.

    My opinions
    1 - I don’t care about the blinds too much unless the sun is blasting in my eyes. If I’m not by the window I’ll ask the person to put it down (or put it down myself if the person is sleeping)
    2 - Arm rests are for the person in the middle seat like you said, the benefit of the aisle and window offsets that. I will happily engage in a passive aggressive elbow battle to claim my space if stuck in the middle seat.
    3 - Reclining should always be done slowly, since people might be using their tables
    4 - I always say hi and if the conversation ensues great, if I don’t want to talk, I have my headphones

    1. Window seats: The person sitting next to it manages it, and should discuss it with your seatmates if necessary. Get the vibe of your seatmates and observe if folks nearby would need it down or don't mind especially if some are sleeping on a daytime flight.
    2. Armrests: Window seat gets the wall, and can be communicated with seatmates.
    3. No stinky/sticky foods lol
    Travelers should be observant and if necessary sometimes it is a good thing to communicate to have a good flight for you and your seatmates. We don't own the seat, but renting the time on it until we land.

    I pretty much agree.
    1. I enjoy looking out the window. But if my neighbors are trying to nap, I’ll just lift the shade a crack. (787s on lockout suck).
    2. If you’re in the window/aisle, don’t be shitty; let the poor sod in the middle have the armrest.
    3. I’m very tall, so I always ask the person in front of me to simply let me know when he’s going to recline so I can get my knees out of the way. If I want to recline, I ask behind me if it’s okay. Most people are very grateful for the notice.
    4. I don’t quite agree on the talking. I remember a flight from the west coast to NY - three white guys, the same age. We told jokes and stories and laughed the entire way across the country. The FAs even said they’d never seen sober pax having such a good time! I wish I’d gotten their names.
    5. If you’re in Economy, you have to bring food. I’m not going to bring a sardine sandwich onboard, but everything has a smell.

      @@lisalu910 As this is a super old comment, looking back you’re kinda right… I think it’s still a thing though because of the flashing lights outside (plane wings have those lights on each end that blink) and because the sun will eventually rise… but yes, having it up shouldn’t really be a big deal

    It’s simple in my mind. I bring eye shades and noise cancelling headphones. If someone wants to have their shade open or be loud, guess what? I don’t know about it because I was prepared. I love, love, love looking out the window which is why I book window seats. I try to be courteous, but If I want to look out the window, I’m opening my shade.

    1. Window seat owns the window.
    2. I find that:
    a. Whoever gets the middle armrests first gets em (3/3 config planes)
    b. The armrest serves as a divider between me and my seat mate (Regional jets)
    3. Any recline is too much IMO. Being 6’2 it’s hard to fit in economy seats anyway so if the person in front of me is reclining, that makes me feel like I’m a budget carrier because of my limited legroom.
    4. Bringing restaurant food on to planes should be prohibited. For example: I was on a JetBlue E190 out of DCA and my seat mate had whataburger from terminal B and it smelled and he spent about an hour in the lav total.

    1. The person in the window seat gets to control the shades. It’s called a window seat for a reason

    3-5. Completely agree with all those statements

  • @JuanWayTrips
    @JuanWayTrips 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I almost always get a window seat and almost always leave it up on domestic flights. Of course, I also try to pick a seat that will not have the sun coming through it. Remember the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, and during the day time it will be in the south (northern hemisphere north of the tropic of cancer). Keep that in mind next time you choose your seat (if you can).
    It's different on international flights that are crossing multiple time zones. There, it's best to have the shades closed, and most likely the FAs will tell you to close them anyways.

  • @gsmeo309
    @gsmeo309 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    My thoughts:
    Window: I’m definitely Team Window Seat and try to get a window seat whenever possible. The world looks really beautiful from thousands of feet in the air and I enjoy admiring and taking photos of the views. That said, I am considerate of my fellow passengers. If someone wants me to lower the shade or set the dimmer to full darkness (I’ve flown in Dreamliners before) for a good reason, I’ll do so if they ask politely. For example, when I was flying home from Cabo, the woman behind me politely asked me to close my window because it was hot and I did. If I took a photo, I raised the shade just high enough to get the perfect shot and then closed the shade again. Also, don’t touch my shade like that one guy who got into a battle with the guy in front of him.
    Armrests: I don’t really use the armrests so it doesn’t really matter to me who gets them. All I want is for other people’s arm hair to not touch me. Coming into contact with other people’s body hair is an icky feeling for me.
    Recline: I only recline on medium to long haul flights if I’m trying to get some sleep. If I recline, I check to make sure that I’m giving the person behind me enough space to exit their seat, use the tray or use the IFE. I would want other passengers to show that same courtesy to me, so I show it to them.
    Overly Chatty Passenger: I’m an introvert, and having to deal with one of them would be one of my worst nightmares, especially if they’re also loud, talk too fast or give me absolutely no warning. I’m not particularly fond of small talk, preferring deep conversations. It also has to be in the right place, at the right time, and with the right person or people, and the conversation has to interest me or be one I can contribute something to, otherwise forget it. I will be polite but don’t expect me to talk. I’m way more of a listener and an observer.
    Stinky Food: Please don’t bring it onboard. I don’t have a sensitive stomach or nose, but I still wouldn’t be pleased about it. I can’t recall ever bringing my own food with me, and if I did, it definitely wasn’t something smelly that my fellow passengers would find repulsive.
    Now that I’ve expressed my thoughts, I recommend that you guys check out Passenger Shaming. Trust me on this one.

    I agree with most of your takes on these topics ... it’s all about mutual respect. With window shades, I don’t think you should have to lower them if it’s a daytime flight. However if it’s long haul, crossing multiple time zones then go with what the majority of the cabin is doing. 😉

    I am totally with you when it comes to the window shade. I do believe as the person in the window seat, I own the shade... I LOVE having it open!! That being said though, I will budge and shut it out of respect for other people on those early morning flights or late afternoon flights where the sun is extremely bright. I think it is the respectable thing to do even though it impedes my all too precious view... 😂😂😂 Once again, great video:)

    With the Dreamliners, the cabin crew own the window shades! (Are they still called window shades on them)
    I rarely use arm rests, so people beside me enjoy that. I sit aisle and even lift that one up!

    Window seat Etiquette: I try to be mindful of the person next to me, had the issue just this past Monday, I love looking out of the window, but the sun hit my seat mate right in the face so I lowered it enough to where I could still see but it wasn’t blinding my seat mate
    Arm rest: I’m on the same boat as you are middle seat gets both and if it’s only 2 seats with no middle, then I normally put my arm on the inside of the armrest while my seat mate does the same usually
    Seat Recline: for me I never recline my seat, but if you do yeah just be respectful of the person behind you.
    Interacting with Seat-mates: personally for me, this is why I bring headphones on flights, I hate talking to people (sorta), last flight I had the only thing I said to my seat mate was a little midwestern ope when I was going to the bathroom (window seat)
    Food on the plane: in that regard, just dint bring smelly stuff, we are all breathing that air for how ever long we are on the plane lol

I will be polite and try to be respectful of other people on my flights. If I am wanting to recline my seat, I will ask the person behind me if it is okay. If not, no big deal! If someone wants to have a conversation, I will respond in kind unless it turns into a drama. A person can only allow so much! I agree about certain foods. If the food is too strong for the nose, leave it home or kept put away until departure from the aircraft. I like to look out the window while in the air, but I will be respectful if asked to put it down!

The last time I flew was in early June of 2018 from my vacation in Orlando, Florida back home to Maryland and the sun was shining bright after takeoff. I am big on the fact that as someone who asks for a window seat, I want to look outside! If the sun is blazing in on my fellow passengers I try to shut the window down to the point that it doesn't blind them … and if they ask me for to lower the shade because of the sun in their face I'll happily oblige (normally the window seat person doesn't get the sun in the face). One thing we don't see of much anymore is perfume/cologne … that's far worse than food smells.

    I enjoy the window shade up for takeoff and landing. During cruise I typically will have it closed unless it’s night time. Especially going over to Europe or Asia because I want to see the northern lights. My pet peeve is when cabin crew tells you to close it because others are sleeping but then leave cabin lighting on AND it’s dark outside still (Korean Air). I recline in economy but online 2 inches or so. It makes a huge difference in comfort for me and doesn’t cause harm to those behind me. Middle seat gets the arm rest but only the arm rest. I have a problem with people over hanging into my seat area. Agreed on the food and conversation. If my Bose are in my ears I can’t hear you anyway.

      Ashwin I think the idea is they want the shades up in case, out of safety, the flight attendants have to look outside to assess the safety and see if they should have passengers only get out to the right or left side of the plane. They probably want the seats upright so they won’t block the row behind you if people need to evacuate, the same reason they want your carryons either under the seat or in the overhead compartment.

    Great Topic for a video. I just road on a "comfort class" ticket on the Air Canada inaugural Airbus A220-300 flight from Montreal to Calgary. I selected an aisle seat and thought if this aircraft truly has the widest economy seat in the Air Canada fleet as advertised by the Air Canada President.... Comfort should not be a problem! Imagine my disappointment to find a "plus sized" passenger who could not fit into the middle seat in my row but who already positioned the armrests up so that he had a bench to sit on. This plus sized passenger could not fit in the seat with the arm rests down. Even his left leg and left foot had to rest under the seat in front of me! The flight was a miserable and uncomfortable experience for me and I regretted not paying the $2400.00 business class fare for this 4hr 30 minute domestic flight. Actually, in hindsight I could have bought the entire row of 3 comfort economy seats for $1500. After the flight I researched the dilemma of transporting the Plus size passenger and was surprised to read that Air Canada has a high rating for handling the plus sized passenger as they are classified as disabled and offered an extra seat for free. That being said, if the plus sized passenger doesn't self declare that they cannot fit the economy, must his/her seat mates suffer? I have written Air Canada to enquire what can be done for the fare paying passenger who can fit in the confines of their economy seat short of buying the entire row.
    Jeb, eager to hear your thoughts. I think this topic deserves an entire video.

    While I agree with most of what you said I wish they would do away with reclining seats period. Unless you are in the front of the plane with a lie-flat seat you will impinge on the person in back of you and make an already tight seat (30 inch pitch?) worse by reclining.

For the recline I never fully recline if im on economy, but if I'm in anything higher I don't mind doing full recline. Lastly fully agree with you on the stinky food lmao oh man

    #1 - Me sitting at the window seat I would let it open - What about taking your own eyeshades with you if you are not sitting at the window and if you would like to sleep on a dayflight?
    #2 - Why not half? The plugins are probably there on that side and you would like to charge your phone.
    #3 - The seats should be up during the meal time - and as you said - and they should be reclined slowly.
    #4 - The problem is that your conversation could disturb those sitting in front and behind you...
    #5 - That is allowed? Wait until someone takes a durian fruit onboard and wait until this person would like to eat it onboard during the flight.

Personally, if it’s not worthwhile for me, I probably won’t do it- and on the flip side if I were in the seat switcher’s position, I would try to make it worthwhile for the other person. In other words, don’t even bother asking if you’re going to ask someone in an aisle/window to take your middle seat. I would try to make the deal as good as possible for the person I’m asking to switch.

    Totally agree with you on everything, except one thing. I am 6'4", so I EXPECT that the person in front of me turns around to inform me that they will be reclining so I can make sure my knees are in an okay position. Otherwise, I have to reposition my knees so they don't get smashed, which always requires that I bump the seat in front of me with my knees. If the person did not tell me they are about to recline, I make no attempt to minimize my knee movement.

  • @JohanMsWorld
    @JohanMsWorld 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    For window seats, yes, the one who booked the seat owns the shade but try to be a bit sensitive. Ifs a long haul flight and people tries to sleep use the minimum opening. The same goes for seats decline, If dinner is served you should not decline it fully and you might want to raise the seat an hour and half before landing in order to not affect peoples waking and serving procedures.
    A thing you forgot is the use of the carry on bings ahead of you, I think its plain rude to bring youre big roller luggage with you in the cabin and block half a bing in order to avaid that fee from check in baggage. If you do so you are and the others who do so blocks out some of those who follows the limitation on carry on luggage so please dont do that.
    Another thing on long haul flight is to try and get a small walk every couple of hours or so if you sits by the aisle. It helps for those at the middle or windows seat to go up and do theyre thing to and it make you less stiff when you get of the plane. Johan.
