Here's a thought freiren might be emotionally about the same age as fren & stark are now .Given how long elves live Also here are 2 points she is realizing she had fallen in love with himmel w/ o realizing it till he died (2) fern & stark a a mirror image of her & himmel 's romance if she had fully realized at the time what it was .
Frieren never thought that way because she knew it was her that randomly picked the ring and for sure she did not pick it based on any meaning. She just felt a little strange that Himmel would present the ring in such a serious way. But now, 80 years afterwards, AFTER Fern told her, she put the two and two together, remembered Himmel's face, and realized what Himmel had in mind. Too bad the presentation should have been more impactful - they should have perhaps inform the audience of the randomness of her picking earlier and separate from when Himmel received and inspected the ring. When the audience realized the meaning of the mirrored lotus, everyone was guessing that Himmel must have purchased this ring to profess his love (which was actually not the case, but still it got the audience ready in that direction) - it constituted an unintentional spoiler of the final scene.
Notice that Fern's bracelet the Lotus is in full bloom, showing that love has or will blossom fully into it's full form. Frieren's ring, however, is still a simple bud and hasn't bloomed yet, showing that Himmel's love will never fully come to fruition, even if it still exists and is still eternal.

It wasn't, actually. Spoiler warning tho . . . . . . . . . . . The current arc of the manga rn was where Frieren got transported to the past. They(the hero party), got ambushed by a powerful demon whose powers dragged it's target into a dream about what they truly desire. We first got the pov of Himmel being wed to Frieren, so us readers thought that it was such a sad thing too. But then it got revealed that the Frieren in his dream was the REAL Frieren. Which subtly told us readers that Frieren liked Himmel too and that Himmel became aware that Frieren liked him too in the future. When it was time for Frieren to return to the future, Himmel thanked her for the good dream, subtly telling us readers that he realized that Future Frieren liked him too. Then when the Past Frieren woke up and asked them why they're so beaten up, he told nothing about their encounter with Future Frieren in order to not change the future.
So this isn’t a huge deal, but Crunchyroll messed up and mistranslated that the ring was a reward for defeating the demon king when it was Himmel offered it for just a subjugation side quest.
