  • How to Use Lateral Thinking and Generate Brilliant Ideas
    The concept of lateral thinking emerged from the work of Edward de Bono on how the mind works and it is de Bono who coined the term Lateral thinking in 1967. It was first promoted as an insight tool that could be used for problem solving and it can be useful to you also.
    In this video, Dr. Baker explains the benefits of lateral thinking.

    One trick I use to get myself thinking laterally is humor. Like how funny a situation is if you look at it from another perspective or misunderstand it. It helps me recognize and empathize with others and clear up misunderstandings. It's not judgemental either so it's a very good interpersonal skill.

    For all my life people judged about me as "being strange". Remarks like: "What has that got to do with it?" Like: "You go from this subject to that subject." A few years ago there was an article in the Huffington post: Are you a high creative person? with 20 questions. My score was 19/20. And no doubt about what to choose as answers. Thanks to Todd Sampson and this video I know that I am highly creative. I see solutions for problems everywhere and I don't understand why people don't see the solutions. Many great inventions were already invented by me years ago and I did nothing with it. I give you an example of my lateral thinking. During my law study at Leiden university we had in the college room a discussion of the structure of thinking during penal law class. I made a remark that I did not understand why the way we think about the same issue in penal law class is different from that during civil law class. All 200 other students looked at me strangely........ Then the professor said: "We are here in penal law class not in civil law class.."
    Later one student came to me and said: "I never thought about that way, but I think you are right. Why is there a difference. It can't be justified." What I mean to say is this. I think that highly creative people are treated very poorly by other narrow minded people. And the term "narrow minded" nails it precisely.

    Awesome explanation!
    My thought process has always (and I'm old now!) been what I considered "idiosyncratic." But thanks to your explanation, I suspect I tend towards lateral thinking. Why? Because I often have a weak hold on "existing patterns." For example, I got into trouble in Sunday School due to numerous objections to lessons as taught. One Easter I found "The Greatest Story Ever Heard" appalling, thinking it "The Most Horrible Story Ever Heard" -- greatest man on earth murdered because people didn't want to listen to him. PLUS he died, then came back to life! I feared this would allow my fellows to take unnecessary risks, like jumping off the roof of their house: "If I die, I'll just raise myself up like that Jesus guy." I realize my understanding of religion was perhaps flawed, but I stood up and objected. My instructors (who my wife likes to remind me were not theologians but rather farmer's wives) were shocked and never fully were able to restore order.
    AND finally, I'm a great "brainstormer." I get LOTS of ideas -- most of them terrible, but if quantity is the goal, I'm the guy.
    Thanks for the inspiration!

    Lateral thinking is very interesting for brainstorming. That’s for sure. The difficulty is when you have to deal with people who want quick and “reliable answers... This is the dilemma I’m currently facing.... As far as I remember, I have always thought lateral and I’ve always gotten a hard time dealing with the more common way of thinking....

    I am just now, at the age of 61, grasping the difference between the vertical and the lateral. Occupy your mind with other interests that run parallel to the subject that stymied your mind. Perhaps a fresh approach will reveal itself. Does that make sense?

    So from de Bono's teaching it seems that he is saying we should try to be both Vertical thinker & Lateral thinker as well, the former one as traditional common majority of people, while the latter a supplement way for more and possibly better ideas, instead of being just one of the above two. He didn't mean that we should give up the usual and common Vertical thinking way, but meaning to add more way of thinking which is more effective and creative one, that's Lateral Thinking.

    It is sometime problematic whe the scool teach people to follow "the right way" the moore you do the moore scors you make, and I hear - I gaind 120 points, by doing this examina - doing what you have been told, and getting rewarded - does not make people creative - I do not mean wee schould turn everything upside down, just get out of the "box" so wee find new ideas,
    fx in technology. Best from Sweden.

    First principles thinking (FPT) is great. Is fPT same as lateral thinking?

    • @quincyalfonz
      @quincyalfonz ปีที่แล้ว

      First Principles mainly encircles around the idea of breaking down complex situations and problems into their most basic parts, and THEN using lateral thinking to come up with different solutions or outcomes.
      In a sense, they could become compatible with one another, I suppose it depends on what puzzle pieces of the problem are left over.

  • @arquiteq
    @arquiteq 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    in my experience "problem solvers" use both. lateral for new problems and vertical for known problems. switching between, i think, depends on knowing or being to identify the pattern. if known use logic, if not, take the gloves off. you are going to be here a while...

    Put the problem on paper. List all possible solutions. Choose the best solution and see what happens. If it doesn't work, does it need more time? If it still doesn't work choose a different solution. Finally, pick other's brains as to a more workable solution. ("in a multitude of counsellors there is wisdom" (Bible) If it's taking too much time and your desire is waning, time to think if the desire was worth it in the first place. Get rid of the desire!.

    Everyone has both Lateral and Vertical thinking. We are suppose to use both. Would that mean that people who can't or wont use both are mentally under developed or crazy? Remember that time the Lateral had to convince the Verticals that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around?
