I would like to mention this, in case anyone has trouble - That if you end up having your pi behind NAT and setup a port forward respectively. Unless you have a static IP on your home network, this can change frequently depending on your ISP. I believe something like dynamic DNS would allow you to make calls to your webhook, without having to constantly update your WAN IP/Port Forward on your router. Food for thought! Thanks for the video Chuck. Best wishes!

Thank you for this very informative video. I've got a few questions about pi.hole though.
Why do you run it in the cloud? What's the benefit? Or is it just for easier IFTTTTT demonstration?
I've been running pi.hole from a raspi for about a year now and I'm very happy with it. But you got me hooked on to docker. I'm thinking about running pi.hole from my Synology. Is there anything specific I need to check on the Synology NAS?
I already run another docker on it. I just don't want to slow down my network if the bottleneck is the NAS. However when I check the raspi it's pretty much idle all the time despite handling about 20 devices' network traffic.
I also use pi.hole as my DHCP. I don't know why exactly. It's just happened to be. On which device would you recommend to be the DHCP?

awesome video chuck! pihole is great for blocking ads on mobile devices where you can't really setup an ad blocker to block ads in a mobile game for instance. i've been wanting a video like this - ppl rave about pihole but all the videos out there tell you to buy a pi, when i really just want to run it locally on a server but don't want to dedicate a whole pc to do it, so a container is perfect. thank you for this video i can't wait to try it.

Yes, it does work for blocking ads on mobile devices - which is great. But the downside is that when you try to play an ad supported game, it refuses to run saying the internet is down.

Another amazing guide. Thanks. This is almost what I'm looking for, but is there a way to modify the scripts so the RegEx are only applied to certain group in Pi-Hole please. I've this set up manually in Pi-Hole, under Group Management > Domains, but need a way to quickly toggle via webhook. That way I can deny, say Facebook, per device, rather than for all. is the doable please?
Could you also make the 3 scripts available separately please. As I already have pi-hole installed.

Nice video... One question though. What changes did you made to the standard pi-hole docker container?

Why not use sudo su and put in the commands that you want and exit from it? Sorry if it's been answered before just getting back into linux and that's what I always used to do.

3:35 Thank you so much for this - this was cauisng me problems using a local LAN and local DNS (basically just a HOSTS type file) on my Mikrotik RouterOS router. Thanks! It caused some problems that were very difficult to identify.

Wow, this was fun to do!
I was able to get my linux server up and running with Docker and Portainer. Then Pi-hole.
I have been slowly learning and building our home network.
This was by far the most exciting. Especially learning more about docker.
Thanks a bunch Chuck. As I've said in other comments; You were born to teach this stuff!

Thanks a lot for all your tutorials. I want to set up a Raspberry pie and pie hole on my Network. Is it necessary to set the dns server manually on every single device in the network in order for the ad blocker to work?

This is a great video and we want more :D Could you do an extended version or just a part two of this, where you go through how Docker networks should be set up and set up a reverse proxy to host all your different apps (running in their own Dockers via docker-compose) on you home network through Pihole's local DNS - hope this makes sense :)

NetworkChuck! Thanks for the great content. One question: in a Docker container, is it feasible to run something like John the Ripper in the cloud and assign multiple logical drives for world class password cracking?
