A fascinating history of the Marantz brand - from its creation by Sol Marantz in New York to its move to Japan and the arrival of the legendary Ken Ishiwata. A video about the company's key moments, innovative products and significant figures, that have made Marantz a cult in the world of audio.
How the brand has travelled through the ages, adapting to new trends and continuing to delight audiophiles around the world.
Been waiting for Marantz definitely deserving of its own video. Request for next video be Quad, Sennheiser, Harman Kardon, AKG, Wharfedale or Grado these are all interesting companies to look into too!
Overlooked in this story is that in 1980, Marantz Japan was spun into three entities: Marantz' line of pro-audio gear remained with Superscope until 2013 (when it was sold off to ION Audio), Marantz in Europe was under control/partial ownership of Philips, and Marantz in the Americas drifted between different owners. Many Marantz products available in Europe and Japan were not available in the US. The US Marantz products of the 1980s included some mediocre low-price "rack stereo systems" and "boom boxes" sold at discount retailers, spoiling the reputation of the Marantz brand name.
I've been using a Marantz PM230 Stereo Amplifier for decades and even though it's only 30 watts per channel at 8 ohms it has one of the best sounding Phono stages.
Kew Gardens is not a suburb of New York City. It's located in Queens, New York City. Still, many neighborhoods in the outer boros still holds that suburban-like ambience.
I would have been interested in hearing about this company's line of automotive equipment as well as their equipment used by movie theaters!!! 🤠👍
The 8B from the early 60s was an even more advanced design than the Model 8 or 9s as it used unique linear phase output transformers and a special feedback network that (unlike the Model 8 or 9s) was able to reproduce perfect square waves. The Legend of Marantz ended when it was sold to Japan in 1966, and so Sidney Smith, Dick Sequerra and Mitch Cotter moved on.
The much missed Ken Ishiwata met him at a few hi-fi shows over the years rest easy Ken San
I've seen Standard stereo gear on ebay. Had no idea it was closely connected to Marantz.
16:00 Nice to see a 510M amp. My dad still has his, but he sold the matching 3800 pre and 150 tuner several years ago.
So according to the narrator with the British accent, everyone has been pronouncing the name Marantz incorrectly.
So phonetically Mare (like the female horse) and ents (like the tree beings in The Lord Of The Rings) it's "Mare-ents"(?) Huh... Learn somethin' new every day. (lol)
Actually, Marantz being orginally an American Company it should be pronounced the way it has always been pronounced, not with a British accent.
RIP Ken Ishiwata
I just installed a new Marantz AV receiver in my system last week. So far, so good. Still getting used to it.
Spectacular vídeo
Always good story thanks!
At 12:20 a projector is mentioned, but a HT receiver is shown, an SR880mk2 to be exact.
Please pronounce the name correctly..Hard R.
They also had a killer sales dept you could buy Marantz at a auto parts store in the town I grew up in.
Do Avery 'Fisher' next.
Yes . They were in Long Island City in their early years just like Marantz. Besides Fisher others in the area were Eico and Harman Kardon. Later in the 70's Sony had an office on Thomson Ave. in L.I.City also. I was fortunate enough to meet Richard Sequerra at his location on Sanford Avenue in Flushing , Queens when he ran Pyramid Speakers. NYC and the area around it has a solid history in the hi fi scene and why not. Edison was in NJ and in Manhattan was the early Bell Labs where movie sound was perfected and research was started on the first transistor.
@3markaw great information, thanks very much.
The picture at 7:47 I think is Fisher.
No hablaron de los altavoces clásicos.
