    As Potato repeatedly admits, he got way too greedy here by forward settling an AI and stealing their natural wonder, especially when he was an easy target with no military. But I think the game could still be won if he had kept his head and played rationally. Sweden repeatedly offered him peace and reparations of 19 GPT if he ceded the city. Potato should have realized that he couldn't beat the AI to crossbows when his science was in the single digits. So he should have taken the peace deal and used the gold to kill Dido and build up his economy. Then he could have returned and killed Sweden. I'd love to see a video where he reloads a save from the war and gives this strategy a try.

    Around 16:40 Potato covers one of my least favorite things about playing on higher difficulties in civ. The AI at the start of the game has HUGE bonuses. Multiple settlers. You really can't compete against them for early wonders. And then those bonuses don't scale and the AI just becomes a bowl of mashed potatoes in the mid to late game where the player just runs them over even with the bonuses they get to science/production/etc.
    I hope that moving to civ 7 they find a way to create more of a happy medium, where players can't compete for early wonders, always have to watch for a forward settling diety AI that just bum rushes you with settlers from turn 1, and in return the AI scales better into the late game
    EDIT: Dido with 69 science on 2 cities (only one campus) on turn 124 proving my point

    • @Jack_Rakan
      @Jack_Rakan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +44

      I agree, the AI players should get less starting bonuses, and more scaling bonuses. Something like a third of their starting bonuses in the Ancient era, and then another stack of the bonuses every era after that. It gives the player more breathing room in the early game and makes the AI more challenging in the mid to late game in situations other than 'haha 2 of your neighbors locked you down in a forever war while someone on the other side of the map steamrolled out of control'.

    • @ascii_9727
      @ascii_9727 2 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      scaling bonuses are so much more interesting than flat bonuses or starting bonuses, I hope more 4x games consider implementing them, I'd love to play against an AI that starts with modest bonuses but stacks up to +300% yields in the lategame

    • @Jack_Rakan
      @Jack_Rakan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @@stevedhondt That's an idea too.... if you want to wait around for 2 hours after every turn in the late game while the game simulates every single one of the million possible combinations of actions it CAN take for every single AI and decides on the best course of action.

    • @ianking7511
      @ianking7511 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I think it would be really interesting to explore the possibility of variable ai.
      What I mean is, I want a 4x game where the ability of the ai to play the game and make good decisions changes over the course of the game. Or ai that's good at some things, but bad at others.
      The problem with civ difficulty is that it's all based on production bonuses and free stuff, rather than computer players actually being any good at the game. Perhaps it's genuinely not possible to code an AI that can beat human players at Civ, at least not while running on home hardware, but given the capabilities of modern ai it feels unlikely.

    • @Jack_Rakan
      @Jack_Rakan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      @@ianking7511 while the idea is very interesting, the problem is that, technically there are too many posibilities in a 4x game like Civ that the AI needs to process through for it to be viable for home PC's. Every turn every city has anything from 20-50 different things it can build, from districts to units to city projects, and the AI needs to have the ability to shift from the currently built target to another one. However each individual city of a 10-15 city empire needs to work together, and not be treated separately, otherwise players will discover this and abuse it against the AI. And that's only taking into account current turn availability.
      A good AI would also need to be able to take into account future options: for example, new districts being unlocked, that a normal player DOES take into account when planning cities. A good AI would also need to take into account stuff like trades that can influence it's options: For example a city can build a +3 Campus near the city center. BUT, a human player will also see that if they sell some resources for flat cash, they can now afford to buy two tiles out and that would give them access to a +7 Campus on the edge of the city.
      Every extra possible action exponentially increases the amount of iterations of possibilities the AI would need to go trough to reach the best outcome possible, which would lengthen turn timers for the AI to unreasonable levels.
      The alternative would be to create an AI that 'learns' to play the game, like how an AI capable of playing Starcraft 2 was created, that eventually was able to compete with the best players in the game, but that 'solution' comes with it's own set of problems.

  • @kindrogue5586
    @kindrogue5586 2 ปีที่แล้ว +152

    Problems I see with deity:
    1- Early game:
    A: Ai starts close to you and you get into a at least 100 turns war, and ai has so much spare production and science there's literally no way for you to keep up, by the time you clear ai's starting army usually they have walls/crossbows. They literally send units down the drain just to keep you from progressing.
    B: You try settle, and keep up with the ai in terms of science and culture and until you keep up, forget about any offensive interaction.
    2-Mid Game:
    You can build wonders ai doesn't prioritize, like petra, colossus, mauseloum, sometimes kilwa etc. You catch up with the ai and this phase of the game is actually decent. If you conquer any ai city though you'll be surprised with how crap it is compared to what they have been pumping out from that city. Ai may attack you sometimes in this phase, but usually doesn't, early wars happen way to often compared to this phase of the game wars. (I'm talking 100-200 turns)
    3- Late game: If you have your gameplan established ai doesn't stand any chance against you, doesn't declare wars pretty much at all. Their stupid bonuses start to fall of, since they don't get governments and usually have crappy cities. Ai is super slow on victory conditions, it usually never gets religion victory on it's own even if you take no part in it, pretty slow on science, ocasional civs try culture victory but you can defend against it. There were so many times I was winning mostly because ai decided to not use it's gdr's they have built against me and let me have a peaceful endgame.
    Summary: Deity early game is a menace, you hate to have it near you, it ruins games by mindlessly attacking you with sheer power and you never had the chance to do anything. Mid/late ai doesn't attack you usually, and lets you win. Their bonuses aren't enough in the lategame to cover up the stupidty they have. I'd like for the ai to have scaling bonuses through the game so they have more bonuses they have from the standart deity ai in the late game. But they don't start with 3 settlers and 5 warriors they can forward settle + rush you down in the early game, but have a better late game. Also it'd be cool if they tried to actually win. Rather than "let me research every tech I don't ever need before winning".
    Basically: problem isn't how hard it is, problem is why and how it is hard.

    • @megamax898
      @megamax898 2 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Oh yeah. Taking AI cities sucks. Like I tried to take a city that had no production, and they just put up mid walls like it was nothing. I ended up getting this forward settled city through loyalty, and it was just painful how long it would even take to get a monument. And the AI only improved one tile...

    • @Savaris96
      @Savaris96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      kinda reminds me of stellaris difficulty, where you they basically scale from default to your set difficulty over the course of the game, getting the highest bonuses by the endgame start year, it keeps the AI kinda relevant, unless you play some kind of tryhard tech-rush build and clown on everything because you are years ahead in technology
      Even the better players suddenly start struggling once they cannot gain the tech leverage by the midgame, and every OP Strat involves maxing out technology in one way or another, which of course is fair, but the AI doesnt know that, on Grand Admiral its just ahead by nature due to the 2x modifier on almost everything

    I’ve been going back and watching some of your old civ 6 videos and stumbled across your recreation of the roman empire playlist and loved every second of it. I was wondering if you would be interested in doing another large scale tsl europe on marathon speed with all the new updated civs. maybe do it as scotland, norway, hungry, spain, or a central europe civ. I think it would be super entertaining with all the updates civ has made in the past 3 years!

    Forget about coastal flooding. Blizzards are so ridiculously devastating in this game for now on I am putting disaster intensity on zero when I play Canada or Russia. I used to think it was just apocalypse mode, but when I played Canada on disaster intensity 2, within 10 turns all of my districts and tile improvements in my biggest cities got pillaged or completely destroyed. I feel like the game persecutes me with the weather sometimes, and those crippling blizzards are ridiculous. Like how am I supposed to compete with deity AI Babylon when all my districts need to be rebuilt?

    • @niallreid7664
      @niallreid7664 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I completely agree. Blizzards are absurd in this game. And you will notice that they deliberately aim themselves at all your improvements. It's the reason I turned off apocalypse mode. If you are Russia or Canada a blizzard can just cripple you.
      Three in a row is basically starting a new game out of frustration. Are blizzards that damaging in real life?

I panicked when the doomsday reached 3 and declared war and now I'm at war with like 4-5 people at once, while being in a corner of the continent.

    Reminds me of a recent start as Alex on a TSL Earth map with Poland, Ottomans and Basil also in the game. Poland and Ottomans both declared on me before turn 20. It honestly was worse than this video, since I only had room for one more city and had really poor production and growth. Even though I held on for a bit (since my capital was fairly defensible), I ended up losing to loyalty pressure.

    Don't give up on this playthorough, Potato! It was awesome seeing a hard game for a professional youtuber, cus usually every game is just ridiculously easy.
    Beeing stuck in infinite war with strong neighbours is basicaly the history of Europe. I truly think that you can change the tide of the game by occupying other continents, developing a strong scientific and industrial infrastructure, and than having your revange on late game war.
    Come on, man, you can do this!

    Just an observation, but in every game where Sweden spawns next to me, they will declare an early surprise war without fail. They will be friendly later if I choose not to annihilate them, but spawning next to Sweden is an immediate warning that I need to prioritise military early on.

    We need a tab that shows your military breakdown. That way you don’t have to go hunting for units later in the game when you’re looking to upgrade them. Open a page and it lists all your units and their ranks and where they are.

    This game reminds me of my own last game: Played as the Khmer and spawned in a pretty good place, got early faith from a luxury and could grab the production on Marshes pantheon. Then Cleopatra decided to forwards settle and box me in from the north even though she had hundreds of empty tiles to the north of her capital, she went and settled 3 cities to the south and declared war on me, and because she kept it up for so long with her stupid chariot archers, Cyrus who spawned to my Southwest also started forward settling me. I finally managed to get a peace with Cleo on turn 80, but now I'm stuck on three 3 population cities (because of course natural disasters constantly hit me), with barely enough land to my south to possibly settle 3 more... if Cyrus doesn't claim them before I get a chance.

    Potato, you take the right side of the archer promotions for the bonus strength against districts. However, the second left side promotion ALSO applies when attacking districts, while at the same time giving more strength against units. I don't think that's how it's SUPPOSED to work, but it does. As a result, the left side are almost always better, unless you're defending from districts.

    I wish there was a difficulty mode where you can play vs Diety but without them starting with extra settlers and settlers cost more for AI to make them take the same amount of turns to build as the player.
