    Bravo, Bovington! I was fortunate to have been able to attend TankFest 2019 last year; who knew the pandemic was coming? This is the next best thing, and I really enjoyed the virtual visits to the other military museums. I didn’t even know about the Royal Netherlands Military Museum and the Austrian Military Museum until I viewed this video; now I can add them to my bucket list. Thank you, Tank Museum!

    Canada never got rid of its tanks. It had been in the plans to replace our Leopard C-2's with a LAV-3 based vehicle armed with a 105mm cannon. But war in Afghanistan showed quite clearly that we still need them so about 20 German Leopard 2A6M's were rented from the Bundeswehr. Then a deal was struck with the Royal Netherland's Army to buy 80 Leopard 2A4's of which a number were converted to Leopard 2A4M CAN a special Canadianized version of the Leopard 2 that incorporated the shorter L44 120mm smooth bore cannon intended for battle in more built up area's as was found in the Panjwai district of Aghanistan. We also have a number of Leopard 2A6M CAN's intended more for tank on tank warfare and more for training we retained a number of you could say more plain Leopard 2A4's with Canadian modifications like machine guns, smoke grenade dischargers, radios, etc. Another small of Leopard 2's were purchased from Switzerland to be converted in to dedicated engineer and recovery variants like the Wisent which has an excavator boom and bucket, dozer blade, winching equipment, and I believe can be fitted with minefield breaching equipment. So in other words no the Canadian's in the end didn't give up on heavy armour......Thank Goodness!

    Love the post-war Soviet tanks, especially when they're not armed and coming at you. For reference, 'glacé' means covered in sugar - not particularly useful for the front of a tank. 'Glacis' (pronounced 'glassis') refers to the sloping ramp placed in front of a fortification to deflect shot, subsequently adopted for the sloping front armour of a tank.

    Please make a video on German WWII tank production errors, such as producing heavy tanks (and too many types!) that were too expensive, too complicated and too costly and unable to cross certain bridges, as opposed to the strategy of producing more late model upgraded medium PzIVs and Panthers.
    Also an associated topic might be a discussion of the anti-aircraft war and panzers, either anti-aircraft units accompanying panzer units and/or the consequences of the loss of air superiority.

    The Dutch tanks in service are technically speaking German tanks as they are owned by Germany and not by the Netherlands. They do have German crews mostly although mixed crews are a thing so far I understood. None of these tanks seem to have a full Dutch crew at all. Funniest thing is that the Dutch military doesn't seem to realize what a tank is and what a IFV type vehicle is as they called the CV-90 a tank while the Dutch variants are not even close to being a tank by definition. The Dutch CV-90's are IFV's by definition. They seem to have similar issues with aircraft and ships, they can't seem to train their own people to understand what they actually have in front of them. haha
    Also it's the Netherlands, not Holland. Holland is either North-Holland province or South-Holland province, neither holds the museum. (Could also refer to a town in the US or one of many old forts or ships trough time)

    "Went from a VW Beetle to a Ferrari, as far as we were concerned"
    If the Chieftain had so many reliability issues, which is pretty common for Ferraris as well, I wouldn't compare the VW Beetle, which was very reliable, with the Chieftain. That also means that comparing the Challenger with the Ferrari isn't saying much about the Challenger's reliability. Not a very good comparison, IMO...

    Didn't you mean the IS family instead of the KV? The KV 1 and 2 were in production just before the war started.
    You probably meant the IS1 (which was in very few numbers) and IS2 that was leading the charge in 1944/45

    • @HanSolo__
      @HanSolo__ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      IS family is in fact a following of the KV family. At the time KV13 came out the designer Kliment Voroshilov got out of political favor of the circles surrounding Stalin. Therefore his 13th model with the redesigned turret became a predecessor of the first IS tank. Not even called IS -1. Because Soviet heavy tanks were built on kind of evolution schema you can see the parts of IS tanks taken straight from KV family. I wouldn't doubt that if not the politics the IS tanks would follow with the KV designation after Voroshilov name as the chief and most successful designer of those vehicles.

    • @darthcalanil5333
      @darthcalanil5333 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@HanSolo__ I know that, but the point is that the two tank specifically mentioned (one in "few numbers" and the other "at the late war") seem to be the IS 1 and 2, and not the KV 1 and 2 which are completely different regardless whether you group then in the same family or not.

    Excellent the Australian Army has spent $550,000 to buy 59 M1A1 Abrams. It's nice to think we have museum quality armoured vehicle exhibits rattling around flying the flag. I know it's for logistical commonality with the USA but against modern vehicles, I'm wondering if they're going to be literal death traps being 35yr old technology. I'm thinking that the Leopard 2 A7 may have been a better choice but it is what it is.🤷

    • @vanlao6367
      @vanlao6367 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are a lot come to play here:
      Politically speaking, Australia can't purchase a good tank with reasonable price from Russia without getting on the U.S nerve, because such action undermine the alliance between the two nations.
      Economically speaking, M1A1 is the only reasonable tank to buy. Sure, its armor structure is quite old for modern warfare, but it still has good fire power and good usability, but the most important thing is - it's cheap buying from the U.S. German Leopard 2A7 is the superior tank in many aspect, but it is way several times more expensive because Germany could not mass produce that many tanks to lower cost, same with the Japanese Type 90. The U.S on the other hand just spent 10-20 years at war in the Middle East, so they have a lot of surplus armored vehicles that can be purchased for a low price because shipping them back to the U.S is more expensive. Given that the U.S has its interest in Asia, and Australia being an ally in the region, the U.S is also more than happy to given an additional discount to strengthen its allies in the region.

    On the topic of reliability, I don't know if comparing a Volks Wagon _Beetle_ to a Ferrari, and favouring the Ferrari is a good idea.
    The Beetle's reliability and longevity are legendary.

    • @HanSolo__
      @HanSolo__ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Who told you Volkswagen Beetle is a reliable car? If it's not one of the last production types it is gonna be an absolute nightmare. Any old Beetle overheat constantly, and that's only an entrance to the world of issues and problems with this car. Ferrari may not be a good idea but considering how complicated and how capable the car is - it is definitely a reliable piece. In many cases, it's a racing car with regular service periods. While racing cars are ALWAYS stripped to the last part and put together before the next competition. Regular road-legal Ferraris are not. Consider this.

    • @walthanas
      @walthanas 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HanSolo__ Ferraris have a well earned reputation for spending a lot of time in workshops or standing next to the road waiting for a mechanic. Having owned several older models of VW Beetle (1200, 1203 and 1302) I don't recognise your "overheating constantly" claim.
