How does a company make $ when open-sourcing their code ?

    • @panpiper
      @panpiper หลายเดือนก่อน +4

They make less money than closed source, potentially, it is risky. But it can also make their model a LOT more popular than it otherwise would be, and if other people use their software to build utilities on that require data centres running the opensource LLM, it is most probable that it will result in greater usage of the data center that runs it, and 'that' would generate revenue if the company that created the open source also owns the data center that runs it.

Not to the people who want to tweak it and use it. There are things I and others need to talk about with an LLM. Things I cannot even mention on TH-cam. Things that an LLM will shut me down for in seconds if I try. Things that could get me locked up for if I mention to a human being. And the consequences for not being able to do so can be drastic in the extreme. An open source, uncensored, permissive LLM would be a godsend to people such as myself. Existing AI LLMs are next to useless as they stand for the likes of me.

    John,
Elon has always been concerned about large corporations taking over AI. At this point, because XAI is playing catch up, for XAI to exert the control over the AI space Elon hoped to see from OpenAI, XAI will need to release Grok as soon as the models are deemed to be stable and relatively safe. In addition, if he is true to his word, then the models should only be censored to meet the legal requirements of each country where it is released. Hopefully it will work with Fabric and with AI Agent.

Two 3060 12 gig variants can together run 30 billion parameter models. Bigger even if you use quantization. The 'red team' censorship in LLMs makes me angrier than virtually anything. Elon's LLM gives me at least a bit of hope. If I cannot talk about the truth that is in my mind, in freaking private with a piece of software, then what is the point? There are things I need to externalize and converse about, that I absolutely would never share with any human being, no matter how many assurances they give me. I don't trust people as far as I could spit to not decide to utterly destroy my life, "for my own good" of course. I could and would talk to an LLM (a good one anyway), but there is not a single LLM out there that won't shut me down within minutes. Thanks for nothing red teams. I wonder how much blood they have on their hands.

Why would you do it from the Start? Makes no sense
Grok won't make money even if it's a subscription because xai is a for profit company
. but Xcorp is X or formerly twitter
      .it's two separate concepts

@@TheMagicJIZZ That’s what Elon wanted with OpenAi… at least that’s what he said publicly. Now we know he didn’t really want that, he just wanted to control OpenAi using Tesla as its piggy bank. There are many open source llms out there. Seems to work for many.

I just don't understand why a dipolar view is always used in these situations. For example, yes, we could assume any corporation is going to want to keep its secrets secret but that does not run opposite of the claim that there are many good reasons for secure environments to exist. In other words, using secrecy to obtain more power is not exactly in the best interest of most people, however, security is the most important issue here and so assuring security in an open environment may prove impossible to attain.
In my own view I cannot imagine a world where Musk or any one else for that matter has the key to securing this tech and yet in an open source community it is still very unclear if that security can and does exist at all.
What then seems weird to me in this new AI world is the fact that the tech gets rolled out just like it is a new version of an OS or a new vehicle design and yet some basic things like "seatbelts" just aren't in existence with it yet etc. Aren't we all getting way ahead of ourselves? I mean I don't think as a society we even have the concepts in place let alone the techniques or tools to know when AI is present in any number of important transactions of information. The average person still assumes a human is always checking behind the scenes etc. That's pretty naive.

How big of a deal is it, really? Unless they open-source the training data and full weights (if they will do that, then it is really great), it's not truly open source, and Grok in general is subpar. This is just another Musk show because his childish worldview can't accept OpenAI's success. I would try to look at this from a positive perspective, but knowing Elon and how he behaves, it's hard to see it as anything more than his obsession with OpenAI's success. His narrative will likely be, 'Hey, look, I open-sourced Grok, now do the same, OpenAI!' But let's not forget that most models were derived from the ChatGPT API, and it took many years for ChatGPT to reach the stage it's at now. Meanwhile, Grok hasn't shown anything novel, yet they boast as if they've made significant contributions to transformer language model research.
By the way, OpenAI never stated they would open-source everything. In fact, OpenAI is not synonymous with "open source." I'm concerned about the direction OpenAI is taking, especially with their strong alignment with Microsoft. It seems they are transitioning into a fully for-profit company. However, one could argue that OpenAI is still "open" to some extent, as anyone can access ChatGPT 3.5 for free. Meanwhile, Grok is not available for free at all. So, the question arises: who and how is open in this context?
And btw OpenAI made huge contributions to other open source projects, for example Whisper.
My main point is that Elon just doing Musk things and pretending he is planet savior as always. I would not jump so fast into conclusions as Grok is "good guy" and OpenAI is "bad guy". Time will tell.

I like your post but you are conflating open source with non-profit. They are not the same!
