A few interesting updates: 1) The WIIM app has firmware release notes in the FAQ that says the 2/17/222 update has increased the optical out put to 24/192. 2) The new update also has an option for fixed 100% volume, but it doesn't seem to be working right, at least via IOS. 3) Mine also came with a power brick, which Mayhem2505 says it now ships with.
I haven't tried the optical output yet, but will be ordering a Topping E30 DAC soon--it will be interesting to A/B it with the aux. output to see if the sound quality gets noticeably better, and also see what the Topping displays the output as.

@@mayhem2505 Good to hear. Yep, I got my Topping E30 the other day, and it's working very well. I do feel like it made a difference in the sound quality for the better--though it's a little hard to tell how much because I also improved my speaker placement/angle right before. I'm using the HiFi tier of Tidal which only goes to 44.1 KHz, and I usually use Airplay which upsamples it to 48, but the WIIM has it's own test tracks which does display on the Topping up to 192 KHz, so it I believe it has the capability via optical now if your data source is that high. Very happy--the WIIM plus the Topping is a very high value combo. Also, those zeros and ones have to go through a lot of to get to the DAC--servers internet provider's infrastructure, my modem and router to name a few. So I'm not going to fret over the quality of the WIIM as a transport as long as I have a good DAC and good equipment.

I compared this unit with my Raspberry PI I build and there was no comparison. The optical output of both was used into a Audio Engine D1 DAC (very nice unit, by the way.) The WIIM Mini sounded "tinny" compared to the PI. The Pi was much more "full bodied" and sounds really, really good. I'm using a HiFiBerry Digi+ Standard hat with the Pi.

I'm commenting a little late on this video, but after all the updates this WIIM is a pretty good device. I own a $1300 streamer, but if you get a WIIM and hook it into a decent DAC or integrated amp or AVR thru toslink you can get a bit perfect signal depending on which streaming service you use. For $99 bucks you can get quality streaming to your stereo. Not a bad deal.

Randy, I was using the DAC in my old iPhone 6s to stream free Spotify and free Pandora from wi-fi through that phone into a 2-channel stereo, (because I’m cheap, too!😉), and that DAC is pretty good for $0; but then I found that my old ZTE tablet had an even better quality sound into my main stereo. Thanks for this video, because now I know that for $99 I could get a unit that I could work an app from my newer phone and not have to move from my listening position,
and it will sound good enough. 👍👨🏻

I received the S.M.S.L SU-1 DAC a couple weeks ago and love it but when I connected it to a cheap highly rated android tablet sold by amazon I can't use the USB for the DAC and charge the tablet at the same time, like i do with my iPad. I wrote to the seller and they say it is not possible. But none the less, audio playback has come a long way since Edward Kellogg co-invented the dynamic loudspeaker 100 years ago as of next year.

Timely review, Randy. I had just procured the Amazon Echolink, and was generally satisfied, but then saw this. I'll be sending the Echolink back. Setup was very easy. The one peculiarity that I've noticed so far is that if music is selected from the app, I am unable to exert further control via Alexa (e.g. to stop or skip a song). Got this yesterday and love it so far! Playing Tidal and Spotify through it, plus a few TuneIn radio stations. Only thing that is perplexing is getting it to play nice with Alexa via my Amazon Echo Dot. If someone ever makes a video on how to set it up to *easily* play music via voice control I'd sure watch it! Just sayin'... ;-) Tried the internal DAC and thought it was OK. But I ended up with it connected to my AV Receiver via Toslink. Right now it still resamples everything to 48kHz but heck, not bad. Hoping they'll rollout that firmware update for "bit-perfect" Toslink output. I might have misunderstood years ago, but I thought Toslink was bandwidth limited to 96kHz - still should do CD quality just fine though even if that is true.
Thanks for reviewing this device! I hope it causes all others to have to up their game in functionality. If the Arylic S50 Pro+ could ever incorporate gapless Spotify Connect or Tidal Connect it might well be a Bluesound Node killer at less than half the price.

I have an Echo Link at home and the WiiM Mini for the office arrived yesterday. I use Spotify Connect and various other radio sources. For me, the key to voice control from Echo to WiiM was to connect them via Bluetooth. WiFi isn't enough. Before I figured this out I deregistered the Echo and the new setup procedure updated it as well; might have been a factor.

@@RobertHartmannJnr THANKS. That might be part of the missing piece of the puzzle. When I got the WIIM I went through their set up routine involving Alexa, but it didn't work. I'll mess with it more this weekend. Thanks again for the tip. I'm trying to get Alexa on my Echo Dot to control the WIIM so I can say, "Alexa, in the DEN, play the album XXX by YYY on Tidal." @@RobertHartmannJnr Well, the Dot still doesn't show up in the WIIM Home app or in Tidal's PC app as an end point to choose (like it does in Spotify's PC app) but, I was finally able to get the Dot to control the WiiM Mini.
I called the WiiM Mini speaker group the "Den" and set it as a speaker group in Alexa and as the default speaker in that group. That was the key to success.
Now I can tell the Dot, "Alexa, in the Den play the album XXX by YYY" and she'll do it.
She can even control the volume, but usually I have the Dot turned up all the way, so the WIIM Mini is at full "pass through" volume, then I control the "real" volume using the Denon remote.
At least that part of the puzzle is gone, but I still don't know if the Dot should show up as an end point. It works so well, I might get one for my bedroom system to upgrade from Bluetooth now that I'm using Tidal.

When I connected the WiiM via optical into the c50 DAC and set up Amazon to play 24/96 then I played Dylan in hirez the c50 DAC showed 96k was playing. Is it weird that I much prefer the sound via APT-X Bluetooth through the Aiyima T8 (Spotify) vs the included Optical cable from the WiiM to the same DAC? Optical sounds more veiled and harsh in comparison, and seems to lose some of the air. With APT-X, the treble is absolutely smooth and inoffensive, but also crisp and much more forward . Optical is showing a 44.1khz connection via Spotify. Is it worth upgrading the TOSLINK cable included with the WiiM? I'm actually thinking of returning the WiiM and continuing to use the built-in BT on the T8.

Powernode you are one-stop-shop and done. Convenient at first, until you want to upgrade or change something. You could always do the Schiit stack with this, and upgrade a media player later if you want something more. While Amps/DACs/Pres/ect are improving, they don't improve nearly as fast as streaming tech, which seems to get significantly better every year. Gives you the option to upgrade, or even price side grade, when more or smoother features become more standard.

I just like knowing things like a good amp hold value and fulfill their purpose for decades if they can survive, vs a streamers lifetime being part of the draw. I would go based on what sound you are looking for then. Can't really go wrong either way these days with reputable reviews.

Randy, you always do great videos but can I ask you for one thing? I am tired of watching videos of streamer devices as they are always about the hardware, and that's important, but I never see anyone review the details, and I mean details, of the software. I am a 2007 Sonos user and will not buy anymore of their expensive hardware after they dropped my product support but I do like their software. I need a few things, 1 Gapless (BTW I have the Andover Songbird and that's a a big problem but excellent at other things with no version 2.0 in sight) 2. A program that allows a queue for "play next", "Add to queue" "edit queue" no matter whose stream you are using, 3. Can run on 5 as well as the 2.4 wifi band. 4. A way to search your music library on a DLNA even if it's just alphabetical like the sonos software (3500 CD's are on the DLNA). I've searched for third parties that add on to the manufacturers software to give it much more flexibility and features for e.g. Sonopad which adds features to your Sonos (Only on Apple iOS). So please when looking at streamers tell us the detail in the software. Thanks and keep doing what you are doing.

I'd be perfectly happy if it would output an incoming 44.1kHz/16-bit file "bit perfect" without any resampling. Yeah, there is a place for high rez but as John Darko makes plain, most people on most equipment can't hear much if any difference beyond CD quality - that the biggest jump anyone will ever notice is going from lossy mp3 or OGG to lossless wav or FLAC or ALAC. According to some, the resampling of everything to 48/16 is a "default" in the Android operating system, so maybe there will be a firmware workaround. I sure hope so. Some reviewers have said that the resampling to 48kHz caused the sound in the midrange to be "soft" whatever that means. But for $99 wow. Even with it's limitations it might be fine for use in a bedroom or other system for non crazy critical listening. As others note below, I was under the impression for years now that Toslink optical out was limited to 48kHz or 96kHz. The fact that the WIIM Mini is gapless is a huge step in the right direction for low cost devices.
It makes me wonder though. if the $99 WIIM can do gapless and be a Spotify Connect and Tidal Connect endpoint, why can't Arylic (the parent company of WIIM) make their $220 S50 Pro + streamer (with a better DAC inside) do the same, and fix it so it passes through the native resolution of files too? If they would do that, it might be a legitimate Bluesound killer for those with decent external DACs.

Hello, Randy thanks for the review I have the WIIm mini myself and have it connected to a Schiit audio multibit DAC and find its sound to be not as good as my $35 Chromecast Audio doing the same thing. Apparently I am the only person on the planet that is not just blown away by the Wiim Mini's sound quality when connected to a DAC. The Wiim Mini just sounds dry and lifeless to me. I have it set to its highest resolution and I am testing it with both Tidal and Qobuz. Pop music that is recorded and compressed to be loud sounds distorted. The EQ feature adds distortion and cymbals sound a little like like tin cans. I have Dunlavy speakers that can be a little revealing at times so maybe that is my problem. So many folks whos opinion I trust (like you) rave about the sound quality of the Wiim but personally I just don't get it. I also did not like the sound of Roon, no matter how I implemented it, so maybe I am sensitive to things others are not. My Chromecast Audio sounds sweeter, more musical, and correct to me. The reason I am Trying out the Wiim is because the Chromecast suffers from drop outs when playing hi res music. So far the Wiim plays flawlessly it just doesn't sound good. Is there something I am missing? Just curious about your thoughts...also my unit did come with the AC adapter.
    Thank you.

I have to tell you, honestly, I'm a bit surprised and a bit mad......that I spent $550.00 on my Node 2i. I'm not trying to tell you not to buy a Node, because the Node does sound better, and I like Blue OS better (not by much). Hooked up via optical into my Emotiva BASX-TA100, the sound is pretty f'n awesome! So the other good thing about this test is that I found out the DAC in my Emotiva BASX-TA100 is actually pretty good!!! I did not bother to connect the 3.5mm adapter out to RCAs, utilizing the DAC in this streamer, because I'm pretty sure it is terrible. Using the DAC in the Emotiva, it sounds like CD quality to me, the software is very nice, easy to set up, just like Blue OS, and the sound is VERY comparable. I used Alice In Chains MTV Unplugged, Adelle "Easy On Me", and my favorite Jazz Album by New York Jazz Lounge "Smooth Jazz Songs", and speakers were Wharfedale D310 bookshelves. Music service is Amazon Music HD. Gaplesss playback was great (with MTV Unplugged Alice In Chains), and moving from song to song was quick. I'm very happy with this little guy. I faired VERY well compared to the function and sound vs. the Node 2i. The company commented that there should be a firmware update coming soon that will improve the output resolution via the optical output. I can't wait for that which looks like it will bridge the gap even more. Buy this with confidence. It works great!!!!! In conclusion, I think the best compliment I can give this unit, is that if and when I need another device for another room, I'm going to buy one of these, not another Node, because frankly, this is too good of a deal for what it does, and it is just plain GOOD ENOUGH.

You didn’t mention if it works with Roon. Does it?

The $50 Chromecast with Google TV also offers gapless playback on any platform, with a digital signal out (HDMI). Rokus also do it. You can watch movies too! Apparently there's some "problem" with how audio signal can be digitally processed on some android based devices, but I can honestly say I have never been disappointed with the sound quality on any of my modest systems. Maybe on a system costing thousands there would be a noticeable disadvantage, but for the very low price and the versatility, I feel like this is a definite cheapaudioman candidate.

Can you connect it to a vintage receiver?

@@tassostsoutis601 with a $10 HDMI to coax/optical adapter yes. Works best hooked up to a screen. Comes with a remote

Help!!! After years of researching (and finding a great sale), I have finally purchased some speakers (Revel Concerta2), and i think I've narrowed down my amp choice, but I keep hearing wifi is the best way to stream from hi Def music services. Would I just plug the Wiim into the back of the amplifier? Looking at Yamaha s701 or 801 and Cambridge Cx61. Thanks!

Isn’t Amazon music HD gapless? Does this do that gapless?

Our recent firmware has enabled the gapless playback for all streaming options including Amazon Music.
