    I've heard that sometimes the left hand plays different chords (not just a different voicing or inversion) in a bar ( or more) that is supposed to be just one chord, and it sounds awesome! How do they do that? using different chords rhythmicly in one measure instead of just one? are there some comping tricks?

    Just curious: Why left-hand voicings in PDF written in Treble Clef vis-à-vis the Bass Clef ?

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      +irProteus Good point. I did it in treble clef because most people don’t read music at all. And of those who DO read music - most don’t read bass clef, only treble. I didn’t want to make the pdf useless for vast majority of my viewers, so I decided to write it in treble clef, even though it technically should be written in bass clef.

    Hi Ruslan, would you use these voicings when playing solo piano? If so, would you have to play them differently? Or would you use different voicings??... or a totally different style? ...I look at a lot of videos like this to try and get my solo piano moving, but mostly the tuition presumes you’ll be playing with a band.. Great video thanks

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would not use them exclusively, but yes.. I would use them! I would maybe slap a bass note underneath some of them, here and there. Because there's not bass player. But yes. Any voicings that outline harmony as useful in any context of playing.

    Like you said "we"" always should be in the middle of transcribing song\solo. Id love to see the way you're doing this.
    Thank You for your channel, its amazing job and so helpful for musicians !!

    • @ruslanpiano

      Daniel Michałek my friend... I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I still haven’t found a good method to REALLY help people with their relative pitch. I was always lucky. Since I was 6, I can hear intervals clearly and I have great relative pitch. This is what allows me to transcribe easily. I hear everything through intervals. But I have no idea how to teach it to other people, because I never had to learn it. I don’t have perfect pitch but I have very strong relative pitch. And I was just lucky to have it. So if you see a video of me transcribing, all you will see is me pressing play on an MP3, then pressing stop after 4 bars, and then repeating exactly what i heard because i hear it very easily... because I’m a lucky son of a bitch, and I was born with a good ear that I did not deserve and did not work for :-/
      I need to be able to teach this to other people!!! I’m going to think about this and ask my colleagues too. Relative pitch is more important than ANYTHING. And I need to figure out how to help people develop it. I’m really sorry I don’t have the right answer for you yet. I wish I had something better to tell you at this point. I apologize.

    Hi man another great video. I have recently started transcribing jazz solos. I can tell its going to benefit me as I can now put what I practice into a musical sense. Thank you for suggesting this. I would like to know how to take the licks and vocabulary I learn from these solos and apply them to a different context. I would really appreciate a video where you walk us through transcribing a solo and transforming licks learnt.

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      First of all, i recommend learning the solo in 3-4 different keys, not just in the original key.
      Then you can write out bits of language that you really like and run them across the modes. I explain how to do that in THIS video: th-cam.com/video/0H4W6FweTn8/w-d-xo.html

    Hey Ruslan! I have seen a lot of people saying rootless voicings start on the guide tones (3rd or 7th). Why is that ? Is it preferrable to jump to a guide tone or to play an inversions with a weaker chord tone as the lowest note to keep a nice voice leading?

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eden Puder 3 and 7 are just safe bets. They are strong and important tones in every chord. One tells us whether the chord is minor or major. The other tells us whether the chord is of the maj7 variety or of the dominant7 variety. Is it ok to NOT play voicings from those two? Sure it is. It’s just safer to do it that way. If you know what ur doing, you can bend rules, because you will know when to do it and how to. If you don’t really know what ur doing - 3 and 7 are always a safe place to build rootless voicings from. Because it will always “work”.

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eden Puder and voice leading doesn’t have to be SUPER SUPER CRAZY tight in your left hand throughout the piece. So sometimes you will need a weaker bottom tone maybe, but usually it will be fine to ignore it. The focus is after all on your RIGHT hand improvisation. Voice lead the left but.. it’s not THAAAAAT big of a deal

    • @anonymousbrowser4448
      @anonymousbrowser4448 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ruslanpiano Thanks for the quick response! I didn't mean not playing them I just meant starting from an inversion. If my rootless chord is 3-5-7-9 but the previous chord makes it so that the closest voice leading is 5-7-9-3 for example can i use the 5 as the bottom note or should i always use a guide tone as the lowest one? I'm thinking more about doing it for comping in a group setting rather than for my solo ( not there yet with one hand haha)

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Eden Puder for comping you should be playing much richer chords than 4 notes voicing. But sure, it’s ok to start on the 5th too

      Both hands comping??

  • @divepeace1
    @divepeace1 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Ruslan, thanks so much for the awesome content! I have a question concerning your recent "Left Hand" exercises. For a C dominant 7, you have Bb E and A in the left hand, but the A natural in C is a 6th. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks a million my friend!

    • @ruslanpiano
      @ruslanpiano  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dave Pierce Very good question. The A natural is both the 6th and the 13th! But how do we know when it’s what? Simple! If the chord already has a 7th (Bb), then the A natural above it is considered a 13th. If the chord has no 7th (Bb), then the A natural is considered a 6th in that chord.

    • @playtf2
      @playtf2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ruslanpiano then the chords you are calling the 7th (e.g. C7) are not actually 7th but the 13th (C13) which is a reharmonization which can cause problems when there are several instruments keeping harmony (e.g. guitar and piano). If only one of them uses this 13th substitution (unknowingly, just using your voicing advice) and the other for some reason considers different reharmonization or no reharm at all this would be a dissonance, no?

    • @SIRUS80
      @SIRUS80 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      lazyWyde Adding a 13th to a 7 chord is not a substitution. Adding available (i.e. legal) tensions to a chord is not a substitution. It’s just adding proper tensions, and enriching the 7 chord. If one instrument plays C7 and the other plays C7(13), no harmonic clash will occur.

    • @playtf2
      @playtf2 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SIRUS80 I understand the reasoning and stand corrected, however by that logic you can just play the whole scale on each bar of something like Autumn Leaves and call it "chord with all available tensions". Except the avoid notes, I guess. So, every bar would be the same. I know I'm going to the extremes here, but there's a reason that player when seeing C7 should picture C7 in his mind, enriching it as he sees fit and not because he read that this particular voicing is C7 (when in the meantime it's actually C13)

    • @SIRUS80
      @SIRUS80 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      lazyWyde It sounds counterintuitive, but u can in deed play the whole chord scale on every chord, technically. On C7 you can play any note from Mixolydian. The reason one doesn’t is because of aesthetic preferences, not because the notes are wrong or will clash badly. All the notes are fine to play and it’s just a matter of how much pepper or how much paprika you want to add to the dish, figuratively speaking. There won’t be any negative clashes if the notes ur adding to the chord are from the appropriate chord scale, one that corresponds . No advanced jazz pianist plays “triad + 7” (C E G Bb) at the sight of C7. There’s no need to exaggerate with the additional tensions, but again - that’s a matter of taste not a matter of wrong notes
