  • I take a look at the availability and cost of Tritium in order to refuel the carrier and return it back from the Pleiades Star Cluster. Players can use the Tritium Depot at the Fleet Carriers in order to achieve this.

    Is there any part of this entire update that isn't exclusively a credit sink?
    So far carriers simply seem like movable stations that force you to return every so often to sink even more credits into them. There's no incentive to buy a carrier aside from bragging rights, masochism or extreme boredom. What kind of developer releases an update of this size, that's accessible only to the very most dedicated players right from the get-go, and then discourages everyone from bothering with it by introducing even more mechanics like having to wait literal hours to move between systems and weekly upkeep costs that are in the tens of millions?
    I'm still really hoping they'll revise this content eventually, but this completely makes me lose faith in Frontier.

      @GiRayne Supposedly youd take the carrier out that far for the coveted 500 ly jump range it has, to reach areas that were unreachable even by a jumpaconda in neutron mode. Id be down, but the upkeep needs to go as well as the charge up/ cooldown time frame. I agree that it all can't be positives to the player tho, otherwise no adventure. But it needs to be different negatives. Frontiers just too lazy about it. They just want to deal in numbers and typed out paragraphs with this game. Hopefully after beta will make sense, but i doubt it. It's not like they have anything up their sleeve. All fdev could do is subtract completely or lessen.

    I just don't really understand what the actual point of a fleet carrier *is*.
    It's clear they don't want everybody to own one, it's an end-game prestige ship that's supposed to act as a focus for you and your online buddies, right. That's cool.
    Except your buddies don't get any stake in the ownership and can't contribute to it in any way except buying parts from it, or fueling it up.
    You could set it up as a trading outpost, but its overheads are so high and (player only) traffic to it will be so low there's no way to turn a profit there.
    Plus you can already trade at stations, so...
    There's no way for carriers to interact with other carriers. Can you imagine two rival squadrons facing off with their carriers backing them up?
    Seems like a carrier exists just so you can jump you and a few of your buddies ships 500LY, but then you get there and...what? mine for fuel?

      You just spent 5 billion on the carrier. 20 million is nothing. I’m sitting on a half a billion myself right now. If you got the money to own one, 20 million is cheap compared to the total cost. 47 million a week to run a fully kitted carrier never mind the cost of goods sold in it or ships for you to buy. Nobody who owns a carrier is crying over 20 million.

      @cmdrodimir7742 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      GokouZWAR true enough. If it was the only running cost, there wouldn’t be much of a problem. The point is that it is a single jump that still takes 2 hours, which can be made for free (with a fuel scoop) in about ten minutes. Every new piece of info just adds to my disappointment.

      How do they even look to be something great?
      Even ignoring the absurd costs, FCs are basically just a menu and a copy/paste hangar/landing pad. No cockpit, can't even watch the ship jump, can't use it as a new way of making money, can't actually fly them except for jumping which takes ages. They don't do anything except sit there and eat money. They don't even look nice, they just look like reused landing pad assets slapped together on a big scrapheap challenge frame. It took them 2 years just to give players a personal landing pad and a new menu to throw money at.

    However, having played this game hardcore since GPP on XBox, and though I may not have been procuring credits heavily, if at all, consistently, I do personally feel that my insane dedication to the game - I RARELY play anything else - SHOULD be rewarded by allowing me to freely maintain a carrier without having to pay the calculated SEVEN BILLION credits a year, assuming I'm using every service. I currently have just over 10 billion, and I plan on acquiring more, but if I have to spend that much money a year on the carrier, then it simply will not be fun.
    YES, I most definitely probably sound petty and like I'm asking for everything to be handed to me, but that's not the case.
    They clearly want us to play more, but I HAVE been playing... A LOT... and I don't believe charging 7 billion a year is the way to keep people "grinding", let alone bring people back to the game.
    The upkeep should be reduced. FULL STOP.

      140 mil a week is nothing for someone who just spent 5 bil on the ship itself. Most people who own them will have 20 bil or more already. I think this is pretty cool cuz now we can mine for players who will actually use something we harvest instead of selling stuff to the ether just so the system can hand us money, and it’ll be player cash that is redistributed to other players. It’s an ACTUAL economy. I wish we could build our own ships from materials harvested instead of buying them. Go out and harvest titanium, copper, all those metals and build a ship from it, just like in Eve online. Have players build them, sell the ships from their carriers... this could be the best thing they ever made if they do it right.
      This thing has been out less than a day and everyone is basing fleet carriers on the beta build youtuber’s are playing on. Why not let them finish the beta before you go criticize them?

    • @smkks
      @smkks 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Criticism is exactly the point of the beta, besides the technical testing. Also I've seen enough betas in my life (not limited to ED) to know that not much will change between the beta and what will go live. You can quote me on that the moment the patch goes live.
      140mil per week is objectively absolute insanity. The only reason I could see for anyone to defend this is if they made trillions from credit exploits in the past - which is totally fine. At least until FD introduces credit sinks like this which then basically exclude most of the player base from the only meaningful new feature in ED in over a year. Whats even more insane is the suspended upkeeping cost. People do take breaks from playing ED, sometimes weeks sometimes months. Have fun paying 70mil/week for literally nothing.

    good thing theres really no reason to have to mine tritium because itll be nearly impossible to maintain a carrier very far away from the bubble anyway. since thats the case youre better off jumping back to the bubble, mining LTDs, then buying tritium with the profits and doing a couple runs to get it all on board. i suppose you COULD theoretically send your carrier out into the black and stay behind to fund it, but then you would need other people to go with it to keep it fueled. and of course there is no reason for anyone to do that aside from the bragging rights of "my carrier is the furthest from the bubble hoorah". as far as actual gameplay loops, i dont really see any.

    I think the cost of Tritium is actually okay. The problem I have is how much is required per jump. I really think that a 500ly jump should never cost more than 100 units in case you are mining while exploring. Otherwise it will take way too long for somebody trying to refuel while mining to get the carrier ready for the next jump. Ideally, with a good ring to mine from I think gathering 100 units should never take more than 20-30 minutes and I think that the jump warm up/cool down period should reflect that expectation with a 20-30min jump cycle.

  • @JG27Korny
    @JG27Korny 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    There are several ways that could make those ship worth.
    1. To reconsider that they should not affect power-play. If there are multiple types. For example the military type should increase security in the system. So instead of making missions you can choose to position military ship.
    A mining ship in extraction economy should passively increase the prosperity. The same for a tourist mega-ship in touristic beacon. Or trading ship should boost trade and prosperity.
    2. To make things more efficient for individual players. For example you position your ship right next to an extraction site. You are more efficient that way instead of going towards a station you can give the bounty hunting information right there, rearm, refuel. Why not just call the ship like in NMS right next to the ring and take cover with it. Or in a conflict zone call the ship in the conflict zone to get extra help.
    3. Or make that only a player group can own this kind of ship in that way the costs can be shared.
    4. If those 3 options are not deemed OK. just divide all costs by a factor of 5. Those ships could be 1 billion instead of 5. Or just make everything just one time costs, not a continuous credit sink. If it is a continuous credit sink that it is possible to think a way to gain credits with the mega ships instead of loosing. So the mega-ship could earn you money, by some game mechanic and you can have a return of the investement. Also consider the possibility to take credits to buy one and using the proper management to pay it back. For example if you have a high ranking in the Federation or Empire you can get a credit line to buy one and by proper management to pay it back. FD should really hire an economist in this project so the mechanic reflects real market behaviour. This is the moment to improve and make a real market in Elite and dangerous. Those fleet carriers are an asset for corporation type of gamplay failing to implement that mechanic will be a huge missed opportunity.
    There are a lot of things that can be done, but everything should offer an immersive game play, or at least merge into existing gaming mechanic. A pure credit sink is the worse way to go.
    All those ideas can make it work. Several just require a simple adjustment with few lines of code. Others require a lot of thinking but have the opportunity to make the game a challenge again.

      Tritium seems to be relatively common, I'd say maybe in 1 out of 15-20 asteroids. It can be obtained mostly by laser mining, but also through sub-surface deposits. Didn't encounter any Tritium cores or surface deposits yet.
      The awful part is that you seem to only get little over 50% in Tritium compared to the amount of limpets you take with you. Granted, this was under usage of prospector limpets and flying alone, I recon you can get that rate up by just randomly shooting rocks to check and/or by mining in a wing.

    20 million credits for a 500 ly jump. If the average jump range is 10 ly that is 50 jumps each way. To move the 16 ships on the deck that is 33 trips each way with another player. That is 1650 jumps, at about 10 sec a jump, 275 minutes or about 4 and a half hours. This means for two people to move their fleet, it costs 9 man hours. The fleet carrier drops it to 1 man hour (spooling time) so you are paying 2.5 million credits per man hour to cut 8 man hours, or 1.25 million per ship moved. There are six ships in elite dangerous that cost more than 1.25 million to move 500 ly, if you are not transporting those it costs more the transport in a fleet carrier than use the in game ship transfer. So, under optimal conditions for the fleet carrier, the fleet carrier is not efficient except for transporting a few ships (anaconda, corvete, ferdelance, cutter, python, type 9 heavy).

    Off of my to do list, affording one is one thing, that fuel upkeep is too much for me. It would be cool if you could pool money between players, like in a guild or something.

    Theory: the outrageous upkeep price is there to justify the unbalanced economy and gold rushes of the base game.
    Discovered void opal mining? The broken Sirius Atmospherics mission board? That's your new normal! Grind those exploits to unlock the endgame content!

    FDev: You need all the credits ever to make this viable.
    Also FDev: we've nerfed the ways to obtain credits so people can ”enjoy the game for longer”...
    Fuck me...

    I kinda blame the gaming industry as a whole, especially console game devs. I wonder how many people play ED because it's the only option besides NMS. ED doesn't feel the need to add content because theirs no competition in their genre.

    Instead of grinding for a carrier in ED.
    Grind the same amount of time in your job as overtime and buy an idris with life time insurance ( zero maintenance )
    In Star citizen

    Mining tritium is as hard as LTDs, so FDev really doesn't want to take it into black.
    they would need to boost mining for that, or give us another mechanic (park near neutron star and have it refuel over time for increasing upkeep that week)
    While 20 Mil for 500ly jump is quite a lot I don't have problem like with upkeep, cause you do something with it.

    I don't understand what fleet carriers are going to add to the gameplay besides being a small base of operation, out way beyond the bubble?

    Does 1T of Tritium correspond to about 1LY of jump range?
    Edit: Checked the video - looks like 1T of Tritium will get you about 1.6LY

    How the f do capital ships get fuel if it costs this much for fleet carriers?

    • @GokouZWAR
      @GokouZWAR 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The question you should ask is how do you spend 5 billion on a ship and can’t buy 20 million in fuel? 500LY will take you from one side of the bubble to the other. You don’t have e to use 20 mil on EVERY jump. A short jump may only cost you 500k

    • @Br3ttM

      @@GokouZWAR What if people actually want to use their carrier as a carrier, and not just stick to a small area? At that fuel cost, it's a cargo barge, not a carrier. It would probably be cheaper to buy a whole new fleet of ships in Colonia, and use a long range regular ship to travel there, than to move your ships there. That 20M is just fuel, there is also maintenance and repair costs.

    500 Tritium will cost 20,000,000, if buying from a station... Jesus, Frontier have dropped a massive turd (overall) with the Fleet Carriers.

    I think I'd rather get a root canal than buy a carrier and continue to grind. If this is direction that FDEV is going then they shouldn't even bother with the paid content that they are supposedly working on.
