samurizzy They did not put much effort into it. The whole game was a junk port from PC version anyway. And I don't appreciate the heavy under steering in early NFS game, it is almost a signature of the game, and there is no correction to it.

i was so happy when this came out for psx. i was considering buying a 3do just for this game back in the day. Automatic transmission felt like it played faster on the psx version. i remember having to drive a standard transmission in the 3do version to get any sense of speed. there's also glitch in the Lost Vegas track where if you hit a jump at a certain angle it records a faster top speed for your car in the air. i got the diablo up to 271 mph :)
This game pretty much got my dad to buy a surround system and some bucket car seats for his little game room. Which he also bought a playstation for specifically...haha Need for Speed..
I remember buying this game in those big huge PS1 boxes before they went to the smaller normal sized CD cases. Man the boot up sound and intro.. nostalgia overload! I want to go back!!
Back when NFS didn't needed ultra realist graphics and any generical cop story F&F wannabe, but a natural sports cars competition race, which it lasted until High Stakes and Underground 2.
Videogame soundtracks used to be so memorable. We no longer have nearly as many classic game soundtracks anymore even If the game turns out great nowdays the soundtrack Is boring over-dramatic orchestras ( Witcher 3 was great tho ). I miss that catchiness In the 90's when electronica was at It's peak and all over PS1 games , the soundtracks were extremely diverse and memorable.
Yes...! I have that same feeling about the 90s games on playstation. That all had that techno upbeat playing. Battle Arena Toshindin. Tekken. Ridge Racer. Etc etc The music is very memorable.
When I was a kid, this was the only racing game I have no clue how to win or get 1st place but I can get first place in Ridge Racer and Gran Turismo no problem.
Autumn Valley was hands down my favorite track. Other tracks in Need for Speed were far better. But for some reason I fell in love with this track. I could pull off some pretty mean track times back in the day.
Oh me too! I would play the 12 lap course with my sister and we would have to stop on lap 7 or 8 because our fingers hurt from pressing the button non stop. Good times man.
@@50kenel I had the mad catz steering wheel and pedals. Which made it really fun. I know Grand Turismo was the big racing game back in the day and was probably far better. But I really like the feel of need for speed.
The 3DO and Saturn versions looked better than this one. Also, the framerate is uncapped at 33 or 34 unstable fps, lower resolution (even more pixellated than the 3DO original) and texture warping. But still, i love this game better than the shit released today.
rob jackson i'm talking about the console versions. I know that was released the Special Edition for DOS and W95, but its an unfair comparison because is really obvious that performance and graphics are superior on PC. Console wise, the 3DO wins for the graphics and Saturn for more stable framerate and a little bit better graphics than PSX.
Retrofan 99 I had the PC version of the first one but played the SE in a friend's house back in those days. Although PC version had better graphics with the 640 x 480 setup, it's a shame you couldn't change the color of the cars in either versions.
I worked on the PS1 version. We ran our physics at 100 Hz but you are correct that the FPS was only 33 FPS. We ported the game from the PC version to the PS1. That was 15-bit art but on the PS1 the artists used 4-bit and 8-bit palettized textures with a 32-bit color palette which allowed us to get more colors. We lost in resolution but had a wider color gamut.
Man back then I thought the graphics were amazing on my CRT and thought the potential of games were unlimited. Never did beat this game though. Always loved Alpine because it was just pure flooring the pedal no real turns :D
Playing this on mobile thru epxse and it's very interesting to see and study this game I líke the first person idea it's a shame that didn't stay for every NFS game after !! Retro gaming is amazing
Ok I have no idea what I'm doing wrong but I can't even place 1st in the first damn race lol. What the hell is up with the difficulty scaling on this game? It makes absolutely no sense lol.
@@Bammer2001 I worked on _Need for Speed_ (PS1). One day I over heard Brad (and Laurent as well?) talking with Sheila (who did track modelling) about looped tracks and misc. track stuff. I saw that she had an SGI box at her desk. After we shipped us programmers also did an Post Mortem and I got some details on how the tracks were created. The center of the road was modeled from splines and extended outwards which is why you couldn't drive very far off road in NFS 1. Sheila is also listed on Moby Games.
You've to play with manual transmission, at the start avoiding all cars and surpass the first one. After that you have only to worry about not letting other cars passing you by staying in the middle of the road and not making mistakes. That's it, do not try going extreme speeds, the AI will always beat you in speed. The initial segment will take many many tries. I won the tournament.
