    Love the craftsmanship you showed us (especially on the motor), like the music, however it was easier to replace the motor with a brand new one (or brushless one) with some adjustable dc/dc converter attached to it? Replacing old parts with old parts is just a matter of time to fail again. The constant running motor must be a simple problem but I guess you must know a little more about electronics. You don't understand everything you do, am I right? It is no blame however could be handy to solve all kind of problems, this puppy is repairable.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi, Code. Thank you for your comment and advice. I replaced inside of the motor parts since I wanted to know the reason why the motor kept spinning. So the replacing inside parts was one of the way to determine the cause it was the motor or not. Anyway, as you said I do encounter many things which I do not understand at all. But it is a kind of mystery solving journey and I enjoyed every step of I took regardless I was able to solve it or not. Thank you again!

    If the electric motor drive on this Sharp GF8989 has the same voltage, then there is no need to dismantle it. You only need to check the voltage he has. You can do this easily with the aid of a multimeter. If the voltage is the same, then it's enough to wrap the wires and transfer it to another electro-mechanism. The cylinder number is not as important as the correct voltage is. I hope it helps. You need to see where the switch is that has a constant electrical switch. Have you tried to check the power switch that is at the play button you press when you want to play the tape? Maybe a contact is created that allows the electric energy to be transmitted to the electric motor.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Daniel. Thank you for the great input. Yes I checked most of the parts and switch, non of gave me any ideas what is wrong. I think somewhere in the motor control units had malfunction for powering up the motor.

    You can't save them all Teddy. There could be another little switch inside the cassette deck itself. But if it was sent to me to restore, I'd throw it out, as the cockroaches were everywhere ...Good job on the motor mind. I've never seen one where the commutator has failed like that, and suspect it ran far too fast when the regulator went pop :-)

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, River. Thank you for the comment. Like you said the commutator was completely broken off. I can not imagine how hot was it to ignite the fire inside of the motor. Anyway, because of the hundreds of cockroaches, I needed to encourage and force myself to keep restoring this boombox until I find the skin allergy reaction on my hand. LOL

  • @gregoryacevedo2940
    @gregoryacevedo2940 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Ted. Did you try putting on all the belts to see if the motor shuts off. Usually the reason the motor is stuck on is when you press play the motor will turn on and engage to the play and raises the play and record head to operating position. If there are no belt present the motor continues to be on. But this does not happen on all radios. This is most common with full logic or soft touch controlled decks. That is usually why you see the motor running even if the radio is off. Try turning the main flywheel a bit so the play and record will drop into the park position and the motor might turn off. Hope this helps. I know you’ll bring her back to life. Cheers Gregory

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Gregory. Thank you for the comment and advise. As you said, that soft touch cassette deck has the system that all the time motor is spinning. Like JVC M-90. But even such boombox, when the main power is off, the power to the motor will be off and motor will stop spinning. This boombox, it is not the type for soft touch or full logic. It will engage the motor power only when the cassette deck buttons are pressed down. Besides that, this boombox's motor keep spinning even the main power button is off. The motor has 3 wires which I did not check each of them, but I guess they are hot, ground and common. And in some reason the hot is bypassing the cassette switch (ON/OFF for the motor) causing motor keep spinning.After spending some time with other boomboxes, I may get back to it and try to restore again. Thank you!

    I was getting frustrated for you. I would step away and come back to it after a little time to come up with ideas. The last straw would be find a really physically beat up 9292 or 9494 that has a good radio and power source and take the insides of that and substitute the parts you need into the 9696. I know you will win eventually.

    No defeat here Teddy - just a project that "tried" to frustrate you in the beginning - I've tackled hundreds of products like this in my lifetime that, along with the original faults, were full of roaches (dead and alive), spiders (dead and alive), money (mostly coins), cake, half-eaten vegemite sandwiches, a novelty ring (those kiddie ones you get out of a 10-cent machine), hair clips, and so on. VCR's, tape decks, tuners, amplifiers, CRT TV's, even turntables all had their share of 'foreign objects' which often took several hours to clean up and/or remove before any repairs or restoration could be undertaken.
    At least the boombox wasn't full of live redback/black widow spiders! That would really bite.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow and I understood how you felt when you open up the body of the items. I also remember that when I was starting to restore the turntable, inside there were unbelievably many of the left over from the past. It was kind of fun for me to look at the each of them imagining how the old life was back in there. Thank you again for your comment.

    Similar issue when I replaced a motor with erratic speed on my Sony. Bought a new old stock motor with identical part number. New one runs continuously as soon as I power on. I've given up for the bit. It seems something in the circuitry is telling it to run continuously, but why? I haven't touched anything on any of the circuit boards.

      The original motor had 3 wires from power and speed adjustment units and other 3 pins for cap. Total of 6 pin mysterious motor. I could not find exact same type of the motor so I tried to test original circuit on the motor even it has burnt mark. By the way, I strongly suspected that there was a problem for powering motor system. The current comes to motor without any power switches were on, and I also suspected this malfunction caused motor to ignite the fire. But Actually I do not know the true reason for this thing right now.

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, even the main power is off, the motor won't stop spinning unless remove the AC cord from the body.

    • @avkarlos
      @avkarlos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teddyhashee that is try to say when did. You change the control tape from radio is stated the motor work wait for press play. Other wise if change for radio is only the way on in off ?

    • @teddyhashee
      @teddyhashee  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This cassette deck, whenever you plug the AC cord or put the batteries in, the motor start spins without pressing main power switch, nor pressing any button on the cassette. Only way you can stop spinning the motor is remove AC cord or batteries.

    If you had an ohm meter you could have looked for the short that was feeding juice to the motor, that's probably why the motor burnt out in the first place

      @teddyhashee  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you for the great advise. I had no idea where to start. But your suggestion gave me the hope to find the real problem in this machine. I will research and learn how to use ohm meter to find out the problem. Thank you again.

      The first ever mono boombox was created from AIWA in the end of 60's. It was super simple cassette deck with 3-band radio. Then 70's Sony made it stereo. Then the quality and size of the boombox rapidly evolved and end up to the "The Searcher W" from Sharp. People wanted to put huge boombox on their shoulder and walk with loud music. 80's Sanyo made a very stylish mini boombox, then Sony made again the Boombox with CD player. Around this time all makers changed their design from just huge bombox to high quality and reasonable size with super power sound. That's what I heard about the history of the Boombox evolution.

      Thank you for your encouragement. The original motor has 3 wires and other 3 pins for the cap. So total of 6 pin strange motor. I could not find same exact motor, so I decided to use original circuit board on the motor even it had burnt mark on it. By the way, this non-stop motor symptom, I suspected it was not from motor malfunction, it was from the malfunction of main circuit board or main power and speed adjustment unit for the motor. Thank you again for your support.

      Yes, it has a flywheel.

    • @Michael-w8v
      @Michael-w8v 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@teddyhashee There are many different reason why it won't stopped. It is normally like the flywheel in car are always running. Switch can have been crossed to each other. (I have a Pioneer DT-540 with rotary issue. I found it has been crossed to each other until I clean it and it gold'd) Wire melted to each other. Or defected transistor that drive the motor. It can be happened because the housing is not back together. Ever more reason that can have been causing this issue. So, I would suggested to check it out this link I found, it is on page 2. www.hifiengine.com/hfe_downloads/index.php?sharp/sharp_gf-9696_schematics.pdf HiFi Engine have more information on it.
