Hi, and thank you for your kind comment. This is quite an old video, so if you'd like to see my fish now, have a look at some of my newer videos. Thanks again, Terry.
Appreciate the video! You might find a drum filter even more convenient - it’s automatic, cleans water effectively, and handles even small particles that other filters might miss. The maintenance is simple, and the electricity costs are super low - around 50 cents a month. For those looking for efficiency and ease, this is an ideal solution for pond maintenance.
Cheers Wrighty for all these videos. You're right, we can't all afford to pay big bucks to buy these new bead filters etc. I've picked up quite a few tips watching these DIY clips, and to tell the truth, the way you put them across in a simple yet interesting way makes me quite look forward to watching your videos..... Happy, happy happy! Keep it up mate.
+velvetfathead Hi, Your very welcome m8 and thank you for your nice comments. Mind you I hate to here my own voice on video lol. Happy Ponding m8. Thanks again, Terry.
Hi David, this is an old video. This filter system has been updated quite a lot since then. You can see the upgrade in this video: th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html The upgrade from this video is the Pro Mk2 which you can find on my website diypondfilters.com Thanks, Terry.
I've watched your videos for a while and I take my hat off to you. Alot like my self I've got ponds filters and fish everywhere. I've got a nexus 220 on my main pond had it years. Absolutely pissed off cleaning it out every other day.Of course I got to many fish but I'm gonna do a filter similar to yours but thanks for all your videos .Well helpfull.
Hi Martin, and thank you for your kind comments. Glad you enjoy the videos. As you know this is an old video of the first filter I made. There has been quite a few upgrades to this filter since then, like the pipework has been changed and now all the tubs are on the same level. You can find all the details for the Pro Mk2 on my website diypondfilters.com Hope this helps, Thanks again, Terry.
@@Wrighty I know. I've seen the new design as well.looks good. I do a lot of welding and also fibreglass roofing.(my ponds fibreglass and 10 years old)never had a leak.if you ever need any advice please ask on either.im good at practical but not to good on computers as you must be (seen your drum filter design)thanks again for all the videos
Thanks Stephen, I've never uploaded a video to you tube before, but this filter system works so well I wanted to share it with other pond lovers. The worst part of having a pond has been cleaning the filters, all that sponge and bio balls. But now with this system that's all in the past. I see now they do a new K1 micro media for ponds they say is even better. I might give that a try next summer. Have you seen my second video cleaning the filters. There is a link at the end of this video. Thanks again. Terry
Hi, thank you. The media is said to last 15 years, so a bit to go yet lol. Glad to here all's well mate. You could always think about upgrading to the Pro Mk 2. Terry.
Best filter design, clearest explanation, and best quality audio I've found yet (and I have done my share of research). This system deals with both of my concerns (biotreatment and solids removal) in one design but I will probably experiment with some less expensive filter media. Thanks for your efforts.
Hi Wright, wanted to thank you for sharing your filtration setup. I will be building my first pond and filtration system this spring. I will be borrowing your ideas shared on your site. Very inspirational, thank you sir!
Hi mate, and thank you. Good to hear all is well. There has been a few upgrades to this filter since. Have a look on my website diypondfilters.com it's now been built all over the world. thanks again mate, Terry.
Nice video. I love DYI stuff. I tinker with things buying manufactured stuff is simply way too much money. With this as you said the biggest cost is the K1 media. Heck you’d need all that for a Nexus anyway. Now my pond is just under a 1000 gal. I have 2 bio falls but because of my unexpected 3 baby Koi my fish load is too high. So now I’ve made a nice size sieve filter. In it I put a UV light and the bottom has the K1. Gravity fed to the bio falls which I use fiber fill batting, cheap and I just wring it out over my plants and throw it away. Open the drain on the sieve and boom I’m done. Water clear, fish happy. Now I’ll share an idea with you. I notice you have netting lying right over the pond. Doesn’t ever look good that way. What I’ve done on mine and other people is I made big hoops out of long lengths of quarter inch dia, steel. Coat it back and then put the net taught over it. Looks great and I have a system to lift a section up to be able to get in.
Hi Lee, this is quite an old video, and I have a new pond now, but thank you for the tip. Very much appreciated. Good to hear your into DIY mate, Terry.
Hi, Unfortunately this pond is about to be filled in as where moving home and the garden here is about to be turned into a road. So I will be building a new pond in our new garden. I will be making videos for TH-cam so keep your eye on my channel. Thanks, Terry.
Great system, well done I appreciate you sharing. If you installed a Y valve (bypass) on the feed from the pump to the filter you can keep the water fall running while you clean the filters or repair one of the barrels etc.
Thanks mzmadman, Good idea, will look at the Y valve. I now have a pond heater to fit in the line as well. so will look at that at the same time. Thanks again, Terry.
This was a great video and thank you for sharing..everything you said made sense...ì love the easy cleaning facility and overflow...im constructing my third pond at the moment and in going to follow your principle ....
Hi mate, and thank you. This is quite an old video, and this filter has been up-graded a few times. This is the new design: diypondfilters.com/downloads/the-new-pro-mk2-filter-system/ hope this helps, Terry.
+ray sharman Hi Ray, And thank you. Depending on the size of your pond, I have done three sizes of this filter. You can see them on my website diypondfilters.com the instructions on how to build, plus loads of other info. It's well worth a look. You can also contact me from there if you need any help. Just give me a shout. Take care. Terry.
Excellent video and setup. I am going try and build something like this with my kids for our pond. I think we may be able to hide the three barrels in the trees and brush behind our house. Thank you for the idea.
Hi Anthony,Thank you for your nice comments. You can download the full instructions to build this system in the shop on my website. diypondfilter.com there are also different sizes of filter. Plus loads more about ponds and fish. Thanks again,Terry
Yes it worked whoo hoo! Finished the three tub filter and I now have clear water and only 15 minutes to clean the filter. it's only been running two weeks at the moment though. I had to empty my pond into a 24ft x 12ft x 3ft kids play pool and clean out all the gunk from the bottom of the pond, I put the pool water back in the pond Topped up with fresh water "AFTER" removing the chlorine etc .The old pond water that was taken out of the pond was reused even though it was really cloudy and still thick with algae but chemically good, no ammonia or nitrites etc. two weeks later and about 10 to 20% water changes every few days, its now Crystal clear. I have also uprated my UV and pump so I don't have the same problem of very green water again. Many thanks for your help Terry and for posting a real answer to green water and easy filter maintenance. Will email you a couple of photos for your website. All the best Tony
***** Hi Tony, It's great to hear everything came together. Your filter should start to settle down now, but give the moving bed a bit longer to kick in, but you're up and running now m8. well done. Time for a G&T Terry. HAPPY PONDING.
BRILLIANT! My hat is officially off Sir, beautifully explained and a joy to hear how proud you rightly should be for having sorted out a difficult issue. I am at the finding information stage and have seen so many tips and systems that seem to be half hearted in concept. Of course it’s not easy to hide three bright blue drums, yet maybe you can lean something like a fake climber in front later. The air stone pump that sends air to all three, how does it manage 3 lines?! Also, the final flow of water to the fall seems to be a lot from such a small pipe, l just don’t understand that. I would love to copy your system if I may. It’s so nice seeing a cheap system without any waisted intervention. Maybe you could have hidden those white pipes behind the barrels, yet you should know, my hat is still off! Well done and thx for the share. A lovely pond to have👍🏻🎖
Hi Steve, and thank you for your kind comments. There has been one or two up-grades to this filter since this video. You can see them on my website, diypondfilters.com The latest version of this system is the Pro Mk2 filter. Thanks again, take care mate, Terry.
To bad you have to look at that net. Every pond is different! Such a fun hobby. I am expanding my first years pond from 550"g, to around, well, I'm not really sure, but my new filter +pond plant resovoir, seems to add another 250, and my new area might be,600g>>? Hooking up a couple solar panels tomorrow, excited for that. cost, mitigation :)
Hi, Your modifications sound good. I am in the middle of moving house and the new pond will have no net as it's closer to the house. You are right I hate the net. Good luck with your new build. Terry
Hi Terry The pipe fitting with all the slots you said it's available on the Internet What's it called what do I search for It's good to see that a good working system that does the job can be put together without spending a Fortune Great video.
Hi Eric, No mate, the pipe with the slots (top filter cages) are homemade. The slots start around 1" from the top of the pipe and go down around 6" to 7" inches. You can use a grinder with a concrete cutting disc in it or a mitre saw to cut the 3mm to 4mm slots. Some people also drill 8mm holes instead. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
Very nice filter system! I plan to try a scaled down version of this for a small turtle pond. I'll let you know how it turns out. Very good video, thanks
Hi, Thank you. This system has been built for a turtle farm in the US. you can see it on my website diypondfilters.com/filter-builds/ also have you seen the latest version of this system the Pro System th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html thanks again, Terry.
Hi, and thank you. I have since re-built and updated this system. Have a look and see what you think. th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html Thanks, Terry.
Hi dear Wrighty, Thank you very much for taking the time to explain about the moving media. Now I have another question about the rate volume of the clean water come out from that filter system if we use, let say a 4000 Gal/H pump. Thank again Wrighty. David
Hi mr. Weighty will I finally built the filters with k1 and k3 bio media, and my pond is chystal clear. I made some mistakes. Yours is by far, way better I had a hard time cutting my 55gal drums. I'll email you some pictures of it. Thanks again for the idea.
Hi Stephen. If it helps m8 I cut the tops off my tubs with an electric jig saw. If you take your time you can get a good cut. You can also use an ordinary hand saw. Terry.
Wonderful video, and a great idea. My only concern is that if there is a blockage the overflow system couldn’t cope. The overflow, by gravity, probably wouldn’t remove water as fast as the pump is delivering it. Overflow would be safer if it was 4” pipe.
Hi Paul, With this system you can have what overflow is best for you. You could have a float in each tub connected to a cutout, so if the water level got too high, it shuts down the pump. There has been several upgrades to this system which can be found on my website diypondfilters.com Thanks for your comment, Terry.
Hello, Terry. Thanks again for sharing your great idea. I have made the project with 3 80-liter drums and it is fully operational now. It has been two days now and the water is slowly getting clearer, I have noticed that the bottom near the submerse pump is now clear of visible residual waste, however the other side of the pond which is a bit elevated has accumulated a lot of those green flocky residues... My solution to that is getting a second stronger pump twice as the volume of the pond and installing wave pumps to create some currents in the water... it would bring the dirt to one of the pumps placed in two opposite sides of the pond. Suggestions?
Hi Renato, Glad to here your all up and running. It will take the media a while to settle down but it's well worth it. The moving media will take about 8 weeks to work, You will see it turning brown and thats when it's starting to work. If your going to buy a bigger pump you could split the flow and fit a pond jet to get water circulation in your pond. That would help. Good luck with the pond m8. Regards Terry
Hi and thank you for your kind comments. There is an update to this system here th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html you can also find the latest filter on my website diypondfilters.com thanks again, Terry.
I'm pleased to say watching your video that i find your DIY filtration system the best i've seen so far and if it's okay with you i'd like to build one for myself because i find the big box store pond filtration system very expensive and,out reach for myself to purchase. my pond dimentions are as follows L 23' x W10'x W12' X D 4' x3' and your filtration design would be more than enough to do the job! again thank you so much for taking the time to post it on U-Tube, Yours Truly Michael from St catharines Ont Canada.
Hi Mike, No problem. I do supply the step by step building instructions on my website diypondfilters.com There is also a brand new up-date of the re designed system called The Pro System. I show it in this video th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html hope this helps. Terry.
Hi mate, this is by the best I have seen. I am looking to make one myself is there any way you could send me your plans / specs??? Can you also let me know where you got the valves for the air? Thanks very much
Hi Zak, Thanks, The air line I used is ½ inch domestic push fit water pipe. and ¾ inch going into the tub. The pipe and valves I got from my local DIY store (Homebase). I can let you have a drawing if you can give me your e.mail. Have you seen my second Video on cleaning the filters. The Link is at the end of this video. Just click the box. Hope this helps. Terry.
Hi John, I did mine with an electric jig saw. You can do them by hand with a normal hand saw if you dont have a jig saw. What I should have done is put a mark on the tub before I cut, so once I'd cut the lid off I new which was the best way it would fit back on the tub. but I didn't think. Hope this helps m8. Terry.
Brilliant filter system, been looking on Ebay for the media filter basket you used for the drain but am having no luck. What is it actually called to aid in the search. Thank you.
I am very impressed with your set up and your pond is lovely. What kind of pump are you using to lift the water from the pond to the filter? Does the water have to be under pressure entering the filter? I would like to use an airlift pump for this, if it would work. What is your opinion? How often do you clean the filter? Weekly, monthly? I was wondering if there is a reason you haven't connected all three clean out drains to one exit pipe with a hose thread fitting. Seems like that would make it easier to use watering your yard plants. Thanks for sharing your valuable information. I will go to your site and buy detailed your plans.
Sandra Lewis Hi Sandra, Thank you. I run a Blagdon Force Hybrid 16000 submersable pond pump. 15000 lph. I'm not sure about an air lift. It would depend on your pond size and how much water it would move per hour. As you may know you have to cycle your pond water volume every two hours, three at the outside for sucessful filtration. I clean the filters once a week as I have quite a heavy fish load. It takes around 15 to 20 minutes. On the new system I have all the drains connected into one. th-cam.com/video/baCbP55QsNc/w-d-xo.html Thanks again. Terry.
@@Wrighty Hey, I figured as much, but.......I'm converting my inground pool to a tropical aquarium style. Your design is most likely what I'll use as bio on the back of my sand filter. Thanks for you great ideas.
This filter has been up-dated 4 times since this video. You can find details on my website diypondfilters.com if your interested. It's now the Pro Mk2 filter. thanks, Terry.
Hi mate, I changed to a self cleaning DIY version of a Rotary Drum Filter I designed 2 years ago. The Pro Mk2 filter plans still sell on my website. Its still an excellent filter and It's been built all over the world. Thanks, Terry.
Great design, i'm going to set it up next spring. The thirt barrel thou i would go for sandswirling. It only takes a few kg white sand to get the whole pond on zero nitrits. It could be swirling by the same airpump i think. I use this technique for many years on my 400L chiclidtank. Just a bit of sand swirling in an old colabottle and it runs for years whitout cleaning. Do you think it would be an idea ?
Hi Ludo, Sorry but I've not had anything to do with sand swirling. I went for this media because I think it is the best thing on the market at the moment for pond filters. All filters seem to be going that way. If you look at the new Nexus 330 and the ones before it, thats all they use. I think if you try this system, you'll be well impressed. You can always add sand swirling later without a lot of problem if your not happy. Terry.
Cheers Terry, I'll start with your design for sure, and maybe the sand is not the best idea if it comes to cleaning like you do, or it will be drained out from the bottem, buit i'm surely going to try to apply it in a differnet way. I'll keep you informed after i tested. thx for sharing.
Hi Joel, I have my submersible Blagden 16000 ltr an hour pump at the bottom of the deep end (4ft). It is also stood on a block which keeps it 6 inches of the bottom of the pond. That way if I get a burst pipe or anything happens where it could pump all the water from the pond, it still leaves 6 inches of water for the fish to survive. I do have a pond hoover which I use to go over the deep end every two or three months in the summer. In the winter I move it up to one of the plant shelves (2ft) so the fish can hibernate in the real cold weather. Thanks for your question. Terry.
Thank you. Have you seen the new version of this system? th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html I also have a website at diypondfilters.com I think you'll find it interesting. Terry.
Hi William, I still do plans for this filter, but there is now an up-date. You can find them all on my website diypondfilters.com Hope this helps, Thanks, Terry
Hi nice one that works well i need to build this my pond is realy green like you said yours was the only time i see my fish is feeding time. Can i ask how deep is the k1 does it go all the way to the bottom and is that all you got in there or do you have any filter sponge or anything.
dennis hopkins Hi Dennis, The tubs contain 50 ltr of media which is just under half full. There's no sponge or anything else. If your pond is green the first thing you need is a UV light. The green is floating algae and a filter wont get rid of that. The filter will remove all the floating debris like fish waist and other particles. It will also condition the water for the fish to keep them healthy, removing ammonia and nitrates. All the information on this filter build and fish keeping are on my website. diypondfilters.com plus 6 other video's on this filter. It's worth a look m8. If you require any further help you can contact me on my website. I'm only to happy to help. Regards Terry.
Hi, Thank you. Have you seen the latest design of this system? th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html you can find more info on my website diypondfilters.com Terry.
Hi, Thank you. The pump has to circulate the water, but it's a combination of things. The mechanical filtration of the first 2 tubs which catch the solid dirt and the bio filter (tub 3) that keeps the quality of the water good. Also the UV light that kills off the algae bloom (green water). Terry.
Hi m8, It's about 5 deg bellow at night here at the moment and the system is still running. If the weather gets any worse, or really cold for a long period of time I will bypass my waterfall, but thats about it. I leave the rest running. I dont do any cleaning as you know, its not necessary winter time. Thanks for your question. Terry
Wrighty A Very ingenious system, indeed. I'd like to put one of those together for our pond here. It's a small one, only about 400 gallons. Thanks again!
Hi Wrighty, very well done. My pond isn't your typical pond, it's an old concrete tank that in years gone by was used to collect rain water from a haybarn. I estimate it holds around 4500 to 5000 gallons. The fish live away fine but my water can be very green. My question is, would the filter you describe be enough on its own or would I require a uv lamp?
Hi mate, This filter would be enough to filter your pond size. This filter has been updated 3 times as this is an old video. You'll find the updates on my website diypondfilters.com it's now called the Pro Mk2 filter system. If you've got green water, it's whats called bloom algae, and as it's only 3 microns in size, it's too small for any pond filter to remove. You do need what's called a UV Clarifier light to kill it, and it will also stick it together, making it big enough for a good filter to remove. If you think of buying a UV light, make sure you buy one bigger than the manufacture's recommend, that way you know it will do the job. Hope this helps, Terry.
Hi mate, The Evolution Aqua Evo range are a little more money, but very good. Make sure you get a UV Clarifier and not the UV Sterilizer. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
The thing with the K1 media is, you do have to shop around and find someone with an offer, I usually get mine on eBay or Amazon. Trouble is everything is going up in price at the moment. Terry.
Nigel Dixon Thanks Nigel, Yes I have a 55w UV. I have just moved it to after my filters. I show it in this video. diypondfilters.com/barley-extract-take-2-uv-gets-clean-water-feed/ Thanks Terry.
Hi Mate, what connectors have you used on your barrels? what sizes are the connectors? I cant seem to find them on ebay as unsure of the propper name for the barrel connectors, could you maybe post a link or 2 relating to you connections you have used? cheers once again for another great video
Mark Dauncey Hi Mark, Thanks for your nice comments. All the parts and the sizes and also where you can get them, are on my website diypondfilters.com under the Filter Parts tab. Plus all the information you need to build the filter is there m8. I also show step by step how to build the system under the Filter Build Information tab. Hope this helps, Terry.
Thanks for the video. I'm starting a 7000 gallon pool to stock about 300 - 5" small koi for the next 6 months and looking into filter types. Most filters I seen have mechanical pads in the 1st tank, can you tell me the difference, is it just to ease cleaning? Thanks.
The K1 filter media once mature, is a really good mechanical or biological filter media. It gives great water clarity, and it's so easy to do a filter clean, you don't even get your hands dirty. Cleaning foams and filter pads can be a hard and dirty job every week. Hope this helps, Terry.
@@Wrighty Thanks, looks I'll leave out the mats also since cleaning would be easier. I have a 7000 gph pump and never thought about it being to big so maybe i need to down size my pump also?
Hi Terry, Brilliant set up my friend. I'm quite near you here in Cleethorpes. My Question is. Do you think I could convert my 4 bay filter into this system? It has brushes in the first bay , Jap mat in 2nd , K1 moving bed in the 3rd And filter floss in the 4th . Do you think its feasible to have the four beds with K1 and the last to with air moving? Thank you Chris
Hi Chris, this is an old video, there is a much newer version of this filter on my website diypondfilters.com/ For this system to work you do need a good depth of water. You will need around a depth of 30cm (12") of media in the top of the chamber and around 46cm (18") of water below that. The water will need to enter each chamber at the bottom and exit at the top. If you can get this, it may work. I've never tried it so I don't know for sure. Hope this helps. Terry.
@@Wrighty Hi Terry, thank you soo much for reply. Yeah I dont it think would work, as my existing filter doesn't feed from the bottom on all the Chambers( only two ). I have added much more air to my moving bed of K1 in the 3rd bay . Do you think I could replace my filter floss bay ( 4th ) with K1 ?
Hi Chris, It's usually best if the moving bed is the last filter chamber. Is it possible to change them round and have the moving bed as the last chamber. K1 or K1 Micro would be ok, or even the new K+ media. That's what I'm using in my new up-flow fines filter, and I find it a really good media. Have a look mate. th-cam.com/video/D_kfXF4j1Ow/w-d-xo.html Terry.
Brilliant , Your systems look superb Terry. I would love to swap over to one . My filter system is drawn from a raised pond from about 600 mm into the filter house that is 1500 mm in length, 700 mm in width and 900 in depth. The return from the filter to the pond is the same height as The draw from the pond . I'm wondering if I have the space for the 3 barrel system and I'm not sure if the return water would get back upto the right height, if that makes any sense.
Hi Chris, It depends on your pond water volume as to what size tubs would be needed. If your over 3000 gallon you would need the 220 ltr tubs which would be s tight fit in your filter house. If your under that you could use the Midi or Midi Pro system which is on 120 ltr tubs. You can have the Midi Pro or the Pro Mk2 as a gravity fed system so your water is pumped from the filter back to the pond. Hope this helps. Terry.
Great job my man. I too looked at the nexus etc and think they're over prices for what's essentially a barrel and some piepwork/media. I'm a practical man myself and would rather build this myself DIY style, then pay through the nose for the off the shelf deal. I assume this is pump fed? I'm building a gravity fed pond. What modifications would be needed for this can you see? To my mind, I just make sure the water levels match the pond level (so I guess all 3 tubs would be same hight) and then put the pump on the outlet?
Hi Rob, This is an old video and this filter has been updated a few times since then. The filter is now called the Pro Mk2. You can find details of it on my website: diypondfilters.com Thank you and hope this helps, Terry.
thank you for your information it was really helpful and hopefully I will show you what I have done based on your idea , can you kindly post a link to this filtration medium ? it seems that everything on eBay is expensive , thank you and God bless
Hi Terry, On the swirl tub, You have the two 90 elbows directing water in an anti clockwise direction, and you mention that there is 6 inches of media, does that mean that the elbows are in amounst the media or are the elbowsjust below the media so you generate maximum swirl and the water is free to move around the tub?
Hi Cate, In the original design there was no media in that tub, but as an after thought I added the media. I would have made it so both elbows were just bellow the media if I'd have thought of it earlier. as it is, one of the elbows are bellow the media and the other one is just in the media, but it works ok, because it pushes the media out of the way and works ok. Hope this helps. Terry.
Hi Agus, this is an old video. This filter has been up-dated 2 or 3 times since then. This is the video of the up-grade to the Pro system: th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html It has now been up-graded to the Pro Mk2 filter. You can find details on my website diypondfilters.com thanks, Terry.
Wrighty Hi. i have seen all your videos. Brilliant work. My question is, Are u only using the media balls in all 3 filters, and not other matting or brushers?
ricky roopnarain Hi Ricky, There is only the K1 media in the tubs. No brushes or foam, That's why it is so easy to clean. If you look at the Nexus 300 they use a similar system. They dont use brushes or foam anywhere. There is now a new K1 micro media out that they say polishes the water. I will be trying that after the winter and will post my findings on You Tube. Hope this helps. Terry. PS Try this link www.coldwatercollection.com/Kaldnes/Kaldnes-K1-p-326.html or this one. www.koienterprise.com/Koi-Pond-Filter-Media/K1-Micro-p-931.html
Wrighty Hi. thanks for the info. Do u by any chance have any pics of the inside of the tubs without the media in there, i like to see ur airstone setup and drain setup mailto: team.venom@hotmail.com. Also what air pump do u run to agitate the media to that extent. I am in South Africa and i am battling to get hold of this Kaldnes media. There is media that look like Kaldnes but not sure if it will work. Thanks again Ricky
Hi Ricky, Did you get the drawing I sent you of the filter? Sorry but I didn't have any drawings or photo's when I was building it. So hope that one helps. Terry.
Hi Wrighty, I went about purchasing the 63mm pipework and valves online for the barrel filter and it was coming to 1200£ , especially expensive were the tank connectors . I've decided to go down to 2inch (50mm) in size . Have you any better place you could recommend for these fittings?? Any help would be much appreciated... Love your channel. Great work.
Hi mate, prices on everything have gone through the roof lately. I don't use 3" tank connectors as they are really expensive. I use Uniseals that work out a lot cheaper and work really well. Just make sure you get the correct Uniseal for your pipe outside diameter. If your using 3" pressure pipe, I use: www.pipestock.com/pvc/pvc-pipe-fittings-metric if your using normal 3" I use www.discountleisureproducts.co.uk/pond-supplies-c1/pond-pipe-and-fittings-c20 Hope this helps. Terry.

Dear wrighty, I wonder why the K1 media on the last tank have to be moving. I thought the bacteria colonize better if the media is not moving. Please explain. Thank!
Hi David, The bacteria your trying to produce in the moving bed is what's called aerobic bacteria and as the name suggests, needs plenty of air to help it colonize and grow. With having the media moving and knocking together, it knocks any dead bacteria off the media making room for new healthy live bacteria to grow and thrive. This is also what makes it a self cleaning media. This filter requires very little maintenance. You will find lots of videos on a moving bed that will explain it better, but that's the principle of how it works. Terry.
very nice video, was wondering if the input of the water by water pump and output of water by gravity fed was the same and if i use a powerful water pump to recirculate the water more times per hour is there any possibility of overflow of water from the tank if no blockages in plumbing. hence will the outflow be same equal to inflow? thanks in advance
Hi Bobby, Thank you. If your looking for more flow through the system you need to look at my new re-designed Pro system as it's on 3 inch pipework and can cope with a much greater flow. You can find it on my website diypondfilters.com It can also be built as a gravity fed system which may be better for you. Terry
Hi terry i picked a drum up on ebay the same as yours and when it came i realised it had a white creamy substance init and i tryed to wash it out and it dont seem to do nothing you wouldent by any chance no what that mite be and have a idea how to get rid of the ohder thanks dennis
dennis hopkins Hi Dennis, Oh! wow m8, that could be anything. I would be very careful using that on your pond m8. Is there any chance you can contact the seller and find out what was in it. The ones I have had an organic liquid plant feed and were pre-washed, but I still gave them a good going over with my power washer a couple of times first. They usually state when they are selling them if they can be used as a water butt. I would get back to the seller m8 and find out what it is. Sounds like some sort of cooking oil or fat. but you have to make sure what it was before you use it m8. Terry.
I got your channel reference from suggestions, I visited for it by watching thumbnail, I believe you have done a good editing work in video than thumbnail. well everyone has a different point of view. the things that I can mention is your hard work and patience. I appreciate your efforts. I am also a creator and I have an idea that how hard it goes in off-scene part so best of luck for great success. #Entrepreneursring #Scepticismdream #Skepticismdream
Cheers for getting back I'm looking to build new pond 18ft by 12 ftby6ft deep do you reckon that your filters sytem would keep up with the task of filtering as this will be the last pond I'm building so must be spot on as some of your videos have inspired me
+Lee Wilson Hi Lee, The new Pro system would be ideal. 18 x 12 x 6 is around 36698 ltr that's just over 8000 gallon. That's the sort of pond I built it for. I'm moving house soon and that's the sort of size I will be looking at. At the moment I have 25000 gallon and I have the Pro system on mine and it's only ticking over. Now with the new Sieve Pre-filter I've just fitted keeping all the large waist and algae out of it, I have to say it's the best setup I've ever had. You can check it out on my website: diypondfilters.com Good luck with the new build. If there's anything you need to know just give me a shout at pondfilters@gmail.com Terry.
Great video, couple of questions if you don't mind. Do the buckets need to be so big ? My pond will be a lot smaller so i had similar thoughts to you but with varied medium through 3 or 4 drums dependent on size and wanted to add a UV to mine. The drainage pipes? is the size due to the pump? Although you explained it very well a drawing of it would be wicked as it would be interesting to see it on paper as such. Great work and thanks for posting the video and keep us posted on how they do . Regards Das
Hi Das. thanks. If you go to my website diypondfilters.com (just click the link). all the information on the media and everything you need to know about how to build this filter system and drawings are there m8. and all my video's. Plus lots of other info to. This can be scaled down to suit your pond, but do keep in mind, you can't over filter a pond but it's very easy to under-filter. If you need to know anything else you can contact me from my website as well. Hope this helps m8. Terry.
Hi Huw, this is an old video. This system has been up-graded a couple of times. This video is the Pro system: th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html and if you go on my website, diypondfilters.com you can find details of the Pro Mk2 filter. Your pond pump size depends on the water volume of your pond. You need to cycle your pond water volume every 2 hours for good filtration, you can go to 3 hours on bigger ponds. I was using a Blagdon 16,000 lph pond pump in this video. Terry.
hi again terry I have just been whaching this video on how u clean your filters great job looks really eazy to clean but I have 1 question when u turn the air line on on them ehite pipes could u tell me wer the air is cumming from I can see u running the same white pipe into all free barrels but I carnt understand how it works can u please describe how thnks terry thus as boggled my head
Hi, The air comes from my Air 2000 air pump to the taps on the tubs. The pipe then goes into the tub and down to the bottom of the tub and out to the middle. When a tap is opened, the air is released in the centre of the tub and rises up through the media dragging water with it that then stirs the media. As the air bubbles are quite large it circulates the water in the tub and the media. This turbulence stirs up the dirt and knocks the media together knocking of the dirt which is then removed by the bottom drains. Hope this helps. Terry.
@Wrighty Hay Mate! Amazing pond filter set up! I'm currently building my own and am wondering if you have the UV filter situated before or after the filter system? Thankyou, Harry
Hi Harry, and thank you. you will find some say the UV is best before, and some say it's best after. So it's really a matter of choice mate. I have mine before the filter for the simple reason, any algae the UV kills off is taken out straight away by the filter and not going back to the pond. Hope this helps mate. Have you seen my new RDF build that I use now: th-cam.com/video/wFeaF2E7-uk/w-d-xo.html you take care mate, Terry.
Hi Richard, this video was up-loaded 9 years ago, so cost wouldn't be relevant now. I can tell you, there has been thousands of this filter system built all over the world. I use to sell the build plans for it from a website. Terry.
Mr. Wrighty, Regards from Brazil... I loved your design and I'm definitely making this project on my one-month old fish pond... My biggest problem here is the hot weather as the algae proliferates quite fast, even with the UV light filter the water is always greenish... any suggestion?
Great pond filter, I have a pond but my filter is a pain to clean so I was thinking of building this for my pond witch is 22 feet long and 10 feet wide 4 1/2 feet deep one end and 3 1/2 feet deep the other end
Hi Chris, Thanks. It sounds like you have a slightly bigger pond than mine. As you will know it’s not so much pond size with filters as the load you are putting on them (amount of fish and there size). I had over 40 fish in my pond for a short time and with this filter system my ammonia levels were still only a fraction above zero and crystal clear water. I did clean the filters once a week at that time, but it only took less than 20 minutes so that was no problem. But it did prove this system does work very well. I have found homes now for the fish I was fostering so I’m back down to my own 20 fish again. Terry.
Hello, what is this pure pond or solution that you clean to the moving bed barrel filter, and what is its importance, and are there alternatives if it is not available in my country, thank you very much
al chalk Hi Al, Thank you. You do need 11 inches in the top of the last tub for the drainage to maintain a good flow through the system unless you can think of a modification. If you do please let me know m8. Thanks Terry.
Hello Wrighty, getting everything ready to start my pond again. Trying to find your air pump, with no luck. How many cubic inch/minute is the one you are using? Love the video, the pond looks great, and I think you have the best filter system I've seen on TH-cam.
Hi Ron, Thank you. sorry I've taken so long to answer, but been working. The air pump is an air 2000. 230 Vac. 20 watt. 2000 L/h. 0.028 mpa. Hope this helps. Terry.
Just purchased the instructions. Really well explained. Cant wait to get building. Will keep you posted. Cheers, John
Hi John, thank you for your purchase. any problems give me a shout on pondfilters@gmail.com Thanks, Terry.
Thanks, Wrighty your instructions are perfect for my tilapia pond in the mountains in the southern Philippines.
Just building my first pond and am find your videos an endless source of great information. So I've decided to start right at the beginning
Hi Anthony, thank you, and glad to hear you enjoy the videos. Good luck with the pond build. thanks again, Terry.
Fantastic design, very thoughtful and cleanly executed.. Best I’ve seen for a DIY filter system. More pictures of your fish!
Hi mate, this is a very old video from 9 years ago. Have a look at one a bit newer th-cam.com/video/QzQvSzczJrw/w-d-xo.html thanks, Terry.
Thanks again,
Terry.
Thank you. You showed me stuff I needed to see. One thing to consider, is painting your barrels and pipes.
Hi David, this is an old video. This filter system has been updated quite a lot since then. You can see the upgrade in this video:
th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html The upgrade from this video is the Pro Mk2 which you can find on my website diypondfilters.com
Thanks, Terry.
@@Wrighty
I know.
Your very welcome mate, and thanks for the kind offer. Might take you up on it one day. Thanks, Terry
That my friend is genius, I turned my above ground pool into a pond I'm going to try your system. Thank you..
Thanks Stephen,
I've never uploaded a video to you tube before, but this filter system works so well I wanted to share it with other pond lovers.
Terry
Four years old and still functional. Thank you.
Hi mate, Thank you for your kind comments. Have you seen the upgrade of this system: th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html
Thanks, Terry.
@78tag what did you use as your less expensive filter media? and how did it work?
Hi Wright, wanted to thank you for sharing your filtration setup. I will be building my first pond and filtration system this spring. I will be borrowing your ideas shared on your site. Very inspirational, thank you sir!
Hi Kevin, your very welcome m8. If I can be of any help just contact me through my website and if I can help I will. Good luck with the build.
Terry.
I still keep coming back to this video, since I made my filter based on this my water quality has been amazing. Thanks again tel 👍
Hi mate, and thank you. Good to hear all is well. There has been a few upgrades to this filter since. Have a look on my website diypondfilters.com it's now been built all over the world. thanks again mate, Terry.
wonderful design, I am def going to incorporate this in my pond upgrade this spring!!! thanks for posting and the well detailed tour!!!
Wonderful !!! Thanks so much for taking time to tell us.
+Ajay Anand Hi Ajay,
Your very welcome.
Terry.
Good to hear your into DIY mate, Terry.
nice pond , like the filter system . i am in the middle of doing my own filter system from 2 header tanks with separation for different media
Hi Keith,
Thank you, I would be interested to see your filter when your done. If you put it on You Tube please let me know.
Thanks again.
Terry
Great design. You could use all the dumped water for a garden, landscaping, trees, rather than a down the drain.
Loves this pond they look so much better than all these nowaday ponds with no feature in 👍👍
Thanks Ryan, check my TH-cam channel for my new pond build. Take care, Terry.
@@Wrighty yes terry I have git to say I cant believe you make everything yourself massive thumbs up to you everything looks amazing 👍👍
nice pond sir! someday when i get rich i will build a big house with a huge backyard with a pond.
Hi, Unfortunately this pond is about to be filled in as where moving home and the garden here is about to be turned into a road. So I will be building a new pond in our new garden. I will be making videos for TH-cam so keep your eye on my channel. Thanks, Terry.
what a waste of such a nice pond! goodluck on your new pond! make it bigger!
The garden is a lot smaller where we are going but you know me. It will be a big as possible lol
ok, goodluck man!
This is the new design: diypondfilters.com/downloads/the-new-pro-mk2-filter-system/ hope this helps, Terry.
great advice, easy to follow. very informative indeed! Good job!
Thanks mate, much appreciated, Terry.
Just brilliant Wrighty, I'm right at the start of a project to clean up my pond and this looks like everything I need. :-)
+ray sharman Hi Ray,
And thank you. Depending on the size of your pond, I have done three sizes of this filter. You can see them on my website diypondfilters.com the instructions on how to build, plus loads of other info. It's well worth a look. You can also contact me from there if you need any help. Just give me a shout.

All the best
Tony
***** Hi Tony, It's great to hear everything came together. Your filter should start to settle down now, but give the moving bed a bit longer to kick in, but you're up and running now m8. well done. Time for a G&T
Terry.
This is awesome Mr. Wright. You explain things really well. Thank you. 👍😊
Terry
+Wrighty That sounds like quite the undertaking! Did you sell your property with the pond installed, or did you have to remove it?
My house is being turned into two houses and the garden will be a roadway to a housing estate. So it will be bulldozed I'm afraid. Terry.
Hi Terry
The pipe fitting with all the slots you said it's available on the Internet
What's it called what do I search for
It's good to see that a good working system that does the job can be put together without spending a Fortune
Great video.
Thanks for downloading this video. very useful technology.Nice job.Use ram pump to make it more economical.Namh shivay.
Thank you Sunita, very much appreciated. Terry.
Very good thinking and design!

Hi dear Wrighty, Thank you very much for taking the time to explain about the moving media. Now I have another question about the rate volume of the clean water come out from that filter system if we use, let say a 4000 Gal/H pump. Thank again Wrighty.
David
If you want to use that size pump, I would recommend going to 3" pipework. There is a newer version of this system on my website diypondfilters.com
Well done mate, really helpful I am just about to make a pond and your filter system is excellent. Thank you.
Hi Mark, Good luck with the build. If I can help give me a shout and thank you, very much appreciated. Terry.
This is a great design, how much k1 do you put inside the mechanical drum chamber?
Thank you. 50 ltr per tub. Terry.
@@WrightyThanks for the info, I'll check out the site. I do believe that most filters you can buy are very overpriced.
Really good video, cheers for this I will definitely give this a go.
Hi Tim, This filter has been updated mate. It's now the Pro Mk2 filter. Checkout my website for more info. diypondfilters.com Thanks, Terry.
Hi Renato,
Glad to here your all up and running.
Great video thanks for sharing your tips ☺lovely pond ☺👍

Wrighty Yes mate I have watched them both. Thanks for this. My e mail address is zacpacker@live.co.uk
Zak, I have sent drawing. Let me know if you get it. If not I'll send again m8.

Hi Terry, great pond filter. What is the best way to cut the tops off the plastic drums please ? Thanks John

Brilliant filter system, been looking on Ebay for the media filter basket you used for the drain but am having no luck.
What is it actually called to aid in the search.
Thank you.
Hi Ross, have a look at this ebay link, it might help. Terry.

Thank you very much Terry.

Nice set up....Im thinkin though, you might use that dirty water for your plants. That organic matter might be really good for them.
Hi, I usually do put the waste water on the garden or the lawn, but this is difficult to do when doing a video. Thanks, Terry.
@@Wrighty Hey, I figured as much, but.......I'm converting my inground pool to a tropical aquarium style. Your design is most likely what I'll use as bio on the back of my sand filter. Thanks for you great ideas.
@@Wrighty Oh how's it running now since it's been so many years? Thanks again, Scott
Brilliant video bud
Thanks mate, there is an update to this system on my website diypondfilters.com if it helps mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty definitely give it a look 👀 👍👊
Ludo De Groote Hi Ludo, Your very welcome. If I can be any help just give me a shout. All the best m8.
Terry.
Fantastic system. Maybe I missed it on your video but where do you have your pump placed and where is it drawing water from the pond?
Hi Joel,
I have my submersible Blagden 16000 ltr an hour pump at the bottom of the deep end (4ft).
Terry.
Fantastic filter .
Thank you. Have you seen the new version of this system? th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html I also have a website at diypondfilters.com I think you'll find it interesting. Terry.
Great video! We need to replace our existing koi pond filter. Where can I purchase the instructions for this set-up?
Hi William, I still do plans for this filter, but there is now an up-date. You can find them all on my website diypondfilters.com Hope this helps, Thanks, Terry
Wow amazing filter! Im definitely going to build something similar to this!
Thanks for your nice comment.
Terry.
Hi nice one that works well i need to build this my pond is realy green like you said yours was the only time i see my fish is feeding time. Can i ask how deep is the k1 does it go all the way to the bottom and is that all you got in there or do you have any filter sponge or anything.
dennis hopkins Hi Dennis,
The tubs contain 50 ltr of media which is just under half full.
Great setup I'll give it a try
Hi, Thank you. Have you seen the latest design of this system? th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html you can find more info on my website diypondfilters.com Terry.
Awesome stuff!!! What makes the water crystal clear? Is it the bigger the pump? or the bigger the bucket? Thanks for the info...
Terry.
Thanks....
Very interesting. Thank you for showing and explaining your system. Do you shut off the whole thing in the winter to avoid damage from freezing?
@@Wrighty Is there any particular uv clarifier you would recommend?
Hi mate, The Evolution Aqua Evo range are a little more money, but very good. Make sure you get a UV Clarifier and not the UV Sterilizer. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
@@Wrighty Hi Wrighty . Where would I get the k1 and K2 media, I'm finding crazy price differences online
The thing with the K1 media is, you do have to shop around and find someone with an offer, I usually get mine on eBay or Amazon. Trouble is everything is going up in price at the moment. Terry.
awesome filters, do you have any uv lamps in the system?
Nigel Dixon Thanks Nigel, Yes I have a 55w UV. I have just moved it to after my filters. I show it in this video.

Hi Mate, what connectors have you used on your barrels? what sizes are the connectors? I cant seem to find them on ebay as unsure of the propper name for the barrel connectors, could you maybe post a link or 2 relating to you connections you have used? cheers once again for another great video
Mark Dauncey Hi Mark,
Thanks for your nice comments.
All the parts and the sizes and also where you can get them, are on my website diypondfilters.com under the Filter Parts tab. Plus all the information you need to build the filter is there m8. I also show step by step how to build the system under the Filter Build Information tab.

What is that green mesh stuff you are using on the top of your pipes please
Keep in mind mate, usually, the faster you push water through a pond filter, the less efficient they become. Take care, Terry.
Hi Terry, Brilliant set up my friend.
I'm quite near you here in Cleethorpes.
My Question is. Do you think I could convert my 4 bay filter into this system?
It has brushes in the first bay ,
Jap mat in 2nd ,
K1 moving bed in the 3rd
And filter floss in the 4th .
Brilliant ,
Your systems look superb Terry.
I would love to swap over to one .
My filter system is drawn from a raised pond from about 600 mm into the filter house that is 1500 mm in length, 700 mm in width and 900 in depth.
The return from the filter to the pond is the same height as
The draw from the pond .
You can find details of it on my website: diypondfilters.com Thank you and hope this helps, Terry.
thank you for your information it was really helpful and hopefully I will show you what I have done based on your idea ,
can you kindly post a link to this filtration medium ?
it seems that everything on eBay is expensive ,
thank you and God bless
Hi Nidal, The K1 media is not cheap I'm afraid. It's usually in the UK around £50.00 to £55.00 for 50 ltr. I usually get mine on eBay. Terry.
Ingenious !
Hi mate, and thank you. Have a look at my latest DIY RDF build: th-cam.com/video/wFeaF2E7-uk/w-d-xo.html thanks again, Terry.
Hi Terry,
On the swirl tub, You have the two 90 elbows directing water in an anti clockwise direction, and you mention that there is 6 inches of media, does that mean that the elbows are in amounst the media or are the elbowsjust below the media so you generate maximum swirl and the water is free to move around the tub?
Hi Cate,
In the original design there was no media in that tub, but as an after thought I added the media. I would have made it so both elbows were just bellow the media if I'd have thought of it earlier. as it is, one of the elbows are bellow the media and the other one is just in the media, but it works ok, because it pushes the media out of the way and works ok.
Hope this helps.
Terry.
Thank you, you made my inspiration

Thanks for your question. Yes I have a 55w UV light.

Wrighty Hi. i have seen all your videos. Brilliant work. My question is, Are u only using the media balls in all 3 filters, and not other matting or brushers?
ricky roopnarain Hi Ricky,
There is only the K1 media in the tubs.

Hi Wrighty,
I went about purchasing the 63mm pipework and valves online for the barrel filter and it was coming to 1200£ , especially expensive were the tank connectors .
If your using 3" pressure pipe, I use: www.pipestock.com/pvc/pvc-pipe-fittings-metric if your using normal 3" I use www.discountleisureproducts.co.uk/pond-supplies-c1/pond-pipe-and-fittings-c20 Hope this helps. whats the thing called that you put on the top of the drain to prevent the media from going through? @11:18

Can you use storage totes for this if you wanted?
Hi, I must say I've never tried it with totes. I don't see why not. Terry.
Can you say more about why it's important to successively raise the barrels?
Terry
Hi terry i picked a drum up on ebay the same as yours and when it came i realised it had a white creamy substance init and i tryed to wash it out and it dont seem to do nothing you wouldent by any chance no what that mite be and have a idea how to get rid of the ohder thanks dennis
dennis hopkins Hi Dennis,
Oh! wow m8, that could be anything.
Terry.

Cheers for getting back I'm looking to build new pond 18ft by 12 ftby6ft deep do you reckon that your filters sytem would keep up with the task of filtering as this will be the last pond I'm building so must be spot on as some of your videos have inspired me
+Lee Wilson Hi Lee,
The new Pro system would be ideal. If there's anything you need to know just give me a shout at pondfilters@gmail.com

Hi wrighty. What's size pump use needed for these?
Hi Huw, this is an old video. This system has been up-graded a couple of times. This video is the Pro system: th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html
and if you go on my website, diypondfilters.com you can find details of the Pro Mk2 filter.
Great info .thanks..would be helpful if you added up the total cost of what it cost you and let us know the price.thanks
Hi Richard, this video was up-loaded 9 years ago, so cost wouldn't be relevant now. I can tell you, there has been thousands of this filter system built all over the world. I use to sell the build plans for it from a website. Terry.
Wrighty, how many gallons per hour is your pump? And is it a submersible pump?
Jeffrey Pinard Hi Jeffrey, I use a Blagdon Hybrid 16000 submersible. It pumps about 15000 lph less head pressure.
Hope this helps.
Terry.
Terry.
Great video
ThePepperford Thank you. you can see all my videos at diypondfilters.com plus the brand new midi filter.

Hello, what is this pure pond or solution that you clean to the moving bed barrel filter, and what is its importance, and are there alternatives if it is not available in my country, thank you very much
Hi mate, If you mean the liquid bacteria I add to the moving bed, I use Evolution Aqua Pure+ these days. Terry.
Great set up there. Can I just ask can the return from the final chamber be placed near the top?
al chalk Hi Al,
Thank you.
