I saw this opening night in a packed theatre. Everyone was chatting and that opening phrase shocked the audience into submission for the rest of the film. It was amazing
That's the best. The first time I saw it, nobody said a thing throughout the entire film. The second time, I actually ended up completely alone in a big 4DX theatre. That was an incredible experience, I cherished every second of it.

You could literally feel your chest pouding because of the sound in the theater, watching this preview through small screen doesn't do justice on how well this film was made.
Agreed, although I think it's still extremely good even on a small screen. It's unfortunate for those who didn't take the chance to see it in the theatre though, it's one of the fairly few films where it's essential that you experience it with a great audio and visual system at least once.
I agree. This film is meant for the big screen. I'm glad I was able to catch it on a premium screen in Dolby Atmos. I'm listening to it on headphones and...whoa. I got some really good headphones because I forgot that I was watching it on a small screen.
I was lucky to go to Dolby Cinema with the immersive sound. And also I took a couple of my cousins who had NEVER in their life been to a theater. So they were absolutely bombarded with new emotions and experiences. Everything aboht the intro is perfect. We recently got a home theater system and my parents (who weren’t able to go) finally got the true feeling of the movie (we had watched it on an ordinary TV with them)
Did anyone else notice how the transitions between scenes in these 10 minutes are really well done? As soon as a subject is spoken of Denis shows them, and the subject is always related to the previous one. Paul thinks about Chani - Fremen - Spice - Imperium and guild - Herald of the change. Such a smart move to make when adapting a rich story like Dune.
As someone with zero knowledge of the Dune franchise, the exposition is masterful throughout the film. The only flaw is that characters have hushed voices, and I sometimes can't understand what they are saying.
1:18 That shot has to be one of my favourites in any film, it looks like something straight out of concept art. Seeing that for the first time on the big screen made me instantly realize that this would be great.

Seeing this in IMAX was probably the most perfect experience I’ve ever had in a theater. The crowd was dead silent. You could tell that the entire audience was laser-focused on the film because of how unbelievably outstanding the sound design, score, and visuals were for this film, and how seeing it in the IMAX format made it a practically spiritual experience. When I watched it for the second time on HBO max, I cranked my soundbar volume all the way up and turned all the lights off. I just can’t watch this movie without the maximum settings of whatever it’s being displayed on. I love this movie so much.
Watching this in IMAX was like a psychedelic experience. The film grips you and doesn't let go, from the very first second with its message of dreams all the way to the end. It drags you into deep, dark places without the refuge of lightness typical in Hollywood films. I felt like I left my body and when the movie ended I came back and had a hard time processing my feelings and what it meant, but I knew it was deep and profound. It was also, of course, incredibly imaginative and beautiful visually.
Makes sense it was like a psychedelic experience, Frank Herbert was a big user of mushrooms and he hung out with the pioneering psychonauts of the 60's. His experiences heavily influenced the Dune universe.
After seeing this at the cinema, watching this opening here has let me appreciate a lot more of the details. Stuff like the fact the Emperor's herald has a ship shaped like the glowglobes they use for light just seems to be a nice little insight as to how they see themselves, and that closeup of Leto's ring as a badge of office is a good way of letting us know its importance without beating us around the head with dialogue.

Exactly! Usually when scifi/fantasy movies open with one big narrated exposition dump its almost always terrible and boring but lotr and dune knew precisely what needed to be said then and what could be kept hidden for later on, kept it short and had amazing visuals. Truly stunning can't wait for part two!
One detail I didn't notice is that at 5:05 you can hear The Reverend Mother's voice. The Voice is meant to sound to each listener like the voice of the person they're most intimidated by. To Lady Jessica, that person is Gaius Helen Mohiam. Consequently, that's who we hear.
6:47 This was the first shot (of many) that completly engulfed me with the scale of this sci fi masterpiece. I'm shocked that it still works even on a phone screen
Everyone's talking about the ceremony or the Harkonnens leaving Arrakis, but I just LOVE the intro of Caladan at 3:39. The soft melody and the distant thunder is so pretty.
I’ve seen the movie four times: twice IMAX, twice standard, although I would’ve seen it all in IMAX had I been able to, and just reading everyone’s comments about it gives me goosebumps…
9:22 my favorite shot from this scene, something about the candle wax dropping on the paper while the Atreides chant is in the background whilst Hans’ score plays is just hypnotic
It's called a filmbook in the world of Dune. Computers were practically outlawed after an uprising against AI in the past so now they only have highly developed analogue technology, or very rudimentary computers.
In ten minutes, I’m already swept up in the story even though I’ve read the series many times. I love the lack of exposition in the film. The story is moving right along. Smart move when your dealing with such a large story. I’m sure there will be a few more details in the next film.
We need the mentats explained and Paul's training as a mentat. We need Feyth Rautha, which is confirmed already. The one scene I'm worried about is Jessica's initiation. I don't know how they'll be able to do that well, including how it affects Alia. Well, I have the same worry about Paul's "coma".
@@pseudonymousbeing987 I mean the visions, the inner experiences of Paul and Jessica during the "coma" and her initiation. The movie was extraordinary but that was one of the few things I thought was not good enough in the film. Denis can do better than that and I hope he does.
@@abstractnonsense3253 Well I think part 2 is the place those visions will actually happen on a grand scale and that's the reason we didn't see them in part 1. The spice agony and water of life are completely different beasts to sniffing spice in a tent. I agree it's a shame that we didn't get a taste of it in part 1 in the couple spots we could have. But since part 2 will feature many scenes where it's absolutely pivotal to the entire narrative I hope we get some thoughtful visuals that build on things like the storm vision which I think had some nice sand imagery with the eyelash lense flares. I'm excited for it because the combination of image and sound can do wonders and they have the opportunity to go absolutely bonkers with it, and furthermore they have the talent that can accomplish those wonders.
This is what happens when a director truly cares about the material. I don't necessarily dislike David Lynch's _Dune_ (except for every appearance of the Harkonnens), but, even without the 35 year disparity in special effects, this film is far better. The difference is love.
6:36 okay this sequence of shots blows my mind. The frigate is tiny compared to the maw of the Heighliner, but when it lands you find that it's actually as big as a skyscraper. I'm trying to guess how big that makes the Heighliner and I'm guessing it's _at least_ a hundred km long. Jesus.
I just love how we see a what looks like a tiny ball come out of this massive Guild Ship, then on Caladan, this tiny little insect is revealed to be taller than a mountain. This movie creates scale like nothing else in the world.
Watching Dune in IMAX with Hans Zimmer score thundering around you with outstanding visuals and direction is one of the most rewarding cinematic experience I had in many years, thankyou director Denis Villeneuve

Usually when scifi/fantasy movies open with one big narrated exposition dump its almost always terrible and boring but lotr and dune knew precisely what needed to be said then and what could be kept hidden for later on, kept it short and had amazing visuals. Truly stunning can't wait for part two!
@@deathless_freak don't forget the soundtrack. The narration keeps it simple and straight to the point. Some films drag on for far too long
An eargasm and an eyegasm.
And a mindgasm!
Best Movie of 2021
One detail I didn't notice is that at 5:05 you can hear The Reverend Mother's voice. The Voice is meant to sound to each listener like the voice of the person they're most intimidated by. To Lady Jessica, that person is Gaius Helen Mohiam. Consequently, that's who we hear.
wow i didnt know they were generous enough to give us the first 10 mins of the movie
"When is a gift not a gift?" - the Baron
Any dealer will tell you "The first hit is free...you want more, you gotta pay!"
It's a win-win situation for both sides
I love how the technology is advanced and yet the culture is so ancient
6:47 This was the first shot (of many) that completly engulfed me with the scale of this sci fi masterpiece. I'm shocked that it still works even on a phone screen
One of the best cinematic experiences ever! So glad I watched it on the theatre
Great opening 10 mins.
The opening scene is masterfully filmed
This is one of those films you have to watch on the big screen. Having dolby surround the shakes your chair and thus you too is also an added bonus.
Every film is better on the big screen.
And quite frankly, the film is still fantastic to watch on the small.
As a huge Dune fan I’ve expected a lot from this film. But it exceeded my expectations many times. The cinematic masterpiece!
Everyone's talking about the ceremony or the Harkonnens leaving Arrakis, but I just LOVE the intro of Caladan at 3:39. The soft melody and the distant thunder is so pretty.
I like how the Harkonnen's harvesters look like giant tics. Really "hammering the sucking life out of the planet" metaphor
I’ve seen the movie four times: twice IMAX, twice standard, although I would’ve seen it all in IMAX had I been able to, and just reading everyone’s comments about it gives me goosebumps…
9:22 my favorite shot from this scene, something about the candle wax dropping on the paper while the Atreides chant is in the background whilst Hans’ score plays is just hypnotic
the little exposition scene with the holographic display of Arrakis is such a cool little detail for me in this scene.
It's called a filmbook in the world of Dune. Computers were practically outlawed after an uprising against AI in the past so now they only have highly developed analogue technology, or very rudimentary computers.
I love the cinematography in this film so much, you can pause this film at nearly any moment and it looks like a masterful painting
Villeneuve is the Kwisatz Haderach of science fiction.
@@abstractnonsense3253 i have the same worries, because they went over relevant details in the first part. Still, i trust denis!
@@abstractnonsense3253
What about Paul's coma? I can imagine it being a fantastic sequence with parallels to the resurrection of Jesus.
@@pseudonymousbeing987 I mean the visions, the inner experiences of Paul and Jessica during the "coma" and her initiation. The movie was extraordinary but that was one of the few things I thought was not good enough in the film. Denis can do better than that and I hope he does.
@@abstractnonsense3253
Well I think part 2 is the place those visions will actually happen on a grand scale and that's the reason we didn't see them in part 1.
I love this movie. Up there with Blade Runner as a masterpiece.
6:54 but like this shot of Paul looking up is just gorgeous
2:04 has gotta be the one of the coolest slow-mo scene I have seen.
Seeing this on a huge IMAX screen with the towering aspect ratio was one of the best cinematic experiences I’ve ever had.
I love Dune so much
Seeing this in IMAX was something else entirely.
3:00 That shot (By accident or intentional) gives off a great tribute to old Sci Fi cinematography like 2001 or Alien....just love that shot!
I love the music around 5:40. Perfection.
4 times in Theatre ! Masterpiece
4 times for me as well! I went in my first viewing knowing nothing about the source material, but now I’ve become obsessed
@@RShadow12 I was broke so had to watch on laptop lol
Me too 😂
I only saw it 3 times
I've seen it several times and love it. My 1979 reprint paperbacks have been dusted off also. Here we go again.
This is what happens when a director truly cares about the material. I don't necessarily dislike David Lynch's _Dune_ (except for every appearance of the Harkonnens), but, even without the 35 year disparity in special effects, this film is far better. The difference is love.
the difference is studio interference
6:36 okay this sequence of shots blows my mind. The frigate is tiny compared to the maw of the Heighliner, but when it lands you find that it's actually as big as a skyscraper. I'm trying to guess how big that makes the Heighliner and I'm guessing it's _at least_ a hundred km long. Jesus.
Best film I've seen this year. A wonderful homage to the big screen.
I hope they'll re-release Part 1 when Part 2 will be on the screens.
I just love how we see a what looks like a tiny ball come out of this massive Guild Ship, then on Caladan, this tiny little insect is revealed to be taller than a mountain. This movie creates scale like nothing else in the world.
3:00 this shot is mesmerizing
Watching Dune in IMAX with Hans Zimmer score thundering around you with outstanding visuals and direction is one of the most rewarding cinematic experience I had in many years, thankyou director Denis Villeneuve
Right after that chant I audibly said “okay, I’m sold”
i cannot stress enough how glad i am i saw this in imax as many times as i could
Nah cos I was not ready for that voice to come out of imax speakers on first watch, was like a jump scare
I watched this again at home today, and I’m so glad I did pay the extra to see it in a theatre in imax first time round, the sound shaking my chair and the floor underneath me elevated the movie immensely. Amazing experience, and still a very good film to watch at home afterwards
I’ll never get bored of this film
Every time I watch Dune, I say “ beautiful “ this movie is just beautiful
1:10 God I love the sound of those harvesters.
One of my all time favorite books and had all but given up on screen adaptions. Didn't expect much from this one either though was absolutely blown away by the attention to detail and special effects. Characters are excellent. This is extremely well done and eagerly awaiting more.
I love how the opening sequence sounds like the music from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Eerie.
Right form the get go, you are IN the movie!
2:55 Kubrick vibes
The more Dune books I read, the more appreciation I have for how fcking epic this movie is.
8:12 Whoa, I've somehow never noticed that you can see the Guild representatives faces and blue eyes peering out from behind their visors.
I noticed that while watching last night and I've seen it like 8 times at this point crazy how u always discover stuff
2:47 I remember in the theater (we watched in Dolby Cinema) it was so eerie and beautiful to see the ships leave with the soundtrack. I always get a weird form of goosebumps lol
My God this movie was a visual masterpiece.
To me this truly is space theatre at its purest. You really have to pay attention to everything that is going on as the movie tells the story through visuals mostly but the dialogue is just as important but not the primary focus. Everytime I watch it again I find something new after diving down a Dune lore rabbit hole
