    Great video and thank you for hosting the challenge!! We honestly didn't use as much pantry food or freezer meats and veggies as I thought we would. We did go through a lot of fresh produce, bread, and frozen fruits for smoothies. We did finish off a few things that I wanted that were close to expiring. Our area here in ENC has been hit with three weekend storms, so all of our grocery stores look a mess. Walmart Supercenter being the worst. Our Neighborhood Walmart and Lidl have bounced back the fastest but chicken, eggs, and dairy are still slim to none.. we are back to regular scheduled programming starting tomorrow. We will be going to Sam's Club and a couple of weeks and of course I'm still looking through the Flyers weekly to see what we can get on sale for the best prices. Thank you for sharing!!

    I'm doing a pantry challenge as well. I didn't make a dent in our food. I still have a large amount of frozen and home canned food. I'm doing a low spend year and I now feel confident I could go a whole year lol. I just canned some cowboy candy for the first time and I'm in love! It's so good, I'm obsessed!

    We grocery shopped after 37 days and spent $103 at Aldi on fresh produce, cheese, yogurt and chicken drumsticks (.89/lb). We were missing fresh produce but my kids didn't mind the whole milk from powder.

    I love watching other moms of big families show their pantries and meal plans! Stockpiling for a large family is so different to a small family or couple as there is a lot more to consider with varying needs and tastes. We also have to start early and keep going! I too, am a mum of eight, but with one in heaven (one of our twins passed). Keep up the good work! I have subscribed.

    Giant can of baked beans- toss in crock pot with a pack of hotdogs and let them slow cook a few hours on low. The hot dogs are tender and take on some flavor. I serve them in buns with the beans on the side and French fries or pasta salad. Easy meal for when you are very busy.

    We're in CA. We shop at WinCo and Walmart. They've been sold out of pasta's, canned tomato sauce, crisco, corn, yogurt, frozen pizza, fries, onion rings, beans, soy beans, milk, soymilk, dry milk, soy sauce, chicken, frozen burritos, quite a few seasonings, bottled water, oatmeal, tang, and rice krispies cereal. For non-food products, it's been really hard to find wet dog food, they're out of laundry soap, disposable plates, bar soap, parchment paper, plastic wrap, pedialyte, canning jars, and food storage containers. Walmart's website won't even let us place an online order because it's all out of stock and emergency aid comes to give out boxes of food once a month at the park, but there's cars lined up for blocks and fresh produce is easy to come by in our area, but without canning supplies, you can't preserve it all before it all goes bad. For a while there was a shortage on coffee and it finally looks like coffee is restocking, but now flour is starting to run low in our stores.

    • @Christen-G
      @Christen-G 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hit or miss here in New England, but I did a Walmart walkthrough just to scope things out last week - biggest areas lower than usual are fresh beef, baking goods, and cat food - cat food was biggest hit with maybe a half dozen bags of food and one flat of specialty diet wet food. Otherwise the entire aisle, both sides, was empty. Yogurt, cream cheese and eggs were about half full. Some things have been creatively re-arranged to look full; not as much of the “fronting” with just one or two items at the front of the shelf, but for example the flour section had been reduced from 1/3 of an aisle to a single width on 2 shelves. By making the section smaller it looks fuller with fewer bags. Cookies and prepared foods were at about 50% full, and prices definitely up - 30% or more on some items like eggs and coconut oil, others not affected, like cheese, canned goods and produce.

    I'm trying to cook from my freezer to make room for spring gardening dividends, but haven't made a dent. My zero-waste cooking practices take advantage of the freezer to store stock and chopped meat in packets, while extending the useful life of vegetables. Clearly, I need to make and can many gallons of soup during the coming snowstorm. We probably have 7 years of shelf-stable, one-ingredient foods stored, too . Can I stop prepping now or should I prepare to feed those who are not paying attention? I know the answer...I'll keep growing, canning, producing, and prepping. Nothing will go to waste.

    • @debbylowry7119

      I cannot imagine the space that 7 years of food would take! How and where do you store it all?

    • @GeckoHiker
      @GeckoHiker 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@debbylowry7119If you don't buy packaged convenience foods then seven years of real food doesn't take up much space. If you are picturing a typical full American weekly grocery cart times 52 times 7 years, that is not what we store. We also raise chickens and grow everything we possibly can. I might go into a grocery store a few times a month to take advantage of some loss leaders.
      We buy real food in bulk...like chickpeas, lentils, beans, rice, sugar, honey, molasses, canned fish, canned meats, barley, rolled oats, quinoa, amaranth, millet, spices, sea salt, coffee, teas, chocolate, flour, yeast, some canned tomatoes, pasta, powdered milks, ghee, coconut oil, olive oil, tallow, yard,
      heirloom seeds, (and more).
      Storage areas include the cellar, basement, and kitchen pantry. I make just about everything from scratch including condiments, drinks, desserts, stocks, soups, breads, tortillas, soy sauce, and vinegars. I'm practicing making miso now.
      This is an ongoing project for us, not a sudden idea. I grew up in a farming family and you just stay prepared, growing, preserving, planning, and cooking.

    I don’t know exactly how the stores look in our area. I’m not concerned about it. I have inadvertently been doing a no spend low spend challenge because I have felt the need to eat through our freezer to make room for the fresh harvest this summer.
    I have purposefully been picking things that we don’t particularly choose to eat first. Also with my kiddos getting older and working my pantry needs have changed over the last year or two. What normally we would have gone through quickly seems to go through much slower.
    It’s been fun using things. And watching how God multiplies what we have while we are using what we have been blessed with.
    I’d encourage you to continue to cook through your pantry especially the older things that wouldn’t be your first pick or have been sitting there a while. So you can keep your storage fresh. God bless.

    I’m doing a monthly challenge, but allowing myself $25 (in Australia things are not as bad as the USA but still not great - very hit and miss atm) to buy cream, fresh produce and lil treats. I’m still grocery shopping but only for the gaps I find in my stockpile and using the money I save by only spending the $25 to keep building it up and buy canning supplies. Hi! Just came across your video. We are a family of 4 and live in Wisconsin. I mostly shop at Aldi but get most of any remaining items at Walmart or even our popular gas station here (Kwik Trip) if something like ground beef or butter is on sale. I try and stick to shopping once every 2 weeks. The one thing I have noticed that our Aldi has been out of for awhile is raisins. I have no idea why. Sometimes something might be out when I go but the next time it’s back or I can get it at Walmart if I absolutely need it. But raisins have been out for awhile at Aldi. No idea why either lol. Where did they all go? Not a necessity but my kids like them as a snack. Some other things have been out but not enough that I can remember that I miss them. Seeing the empty shelves at your Walmart was really interesting as that’s not the case here. However - I also live in America’s Dairyland and so it would make sense why would not necessarily need to worry about dairy items here lol

    I do my pantry rotation (aka challenge) every winter to clear old stock into spring usually after Christmas for when our electric bill is the highest so balance it out with lower grocery bill.
    I hardly make any dents in my pantry (my pantry is only a 6-9 months when stretched, I go by my freezer stock). I still have 150 lbs worth in rice, didn’t touch my #10 cans of veggies, or even open any of our big bag of pancake mixes etc. Most stuff I touch is from my freezer like my last year’s free Turkey (had hubs BBQ it) and replenished it with 2 free Turkey (thanksgiving and Xmas), ham, chicken, fish etc. Didn’t make a dent in my 3 months worth of pastas either… Clam sauce I ate up a bunch so needs replacements. Barely touched my spam collection. Same with my tuna fish which we really should start eating.
    I buy depending on deals… like I scored 6 x 59cents VO5 shampoo that I dun need but to add to my still have a half years worth of shampoo.
    My store is out of some things but not as serious as what you show. Like my fav brands of toilet tissue made in USA is out, but there are lots of stock of the other brands etc. Meat prices still reasonable etc. I buy veggies else where because I find even Wegmans, their veggie products is no longer keeping fresh longer like it used to. Hubs says it’s a short of help so more products sit and rot which makes sense. So I shop at the Amish markets for produce since they are hardworking and not short of hands due to work ethics… and their veggies last 3 times as long than the grocery store. I know because I have Covid and went there the weekend before Covid strikes and have to stay home for 3 weeks and the salad greens I use to decorate my Chinese New Year (Feb 1st) hot pot display with is still not wilted.
    Buy local, support local so we all help fight inflation.

      I haven't seen them in my area either. Once in a while a specific size will be out of stock but entire shelfs are not bare.

      True, but if I’m going to buy corn tortillas, I’d rather just buy the tortilla chips.😁

      Thanks for your concern but if things get so bad that internet strangers are hunting down TH-cam pantries, we will have already shared what we have with our neighbors and there will be nothing left to steal.😉

    Question: Why can the beans? They're so quick and easy to make in a pressure cooker, so what makes the time and expense of canning them worth it? (Not trying to start a fight, just wondering what I'm missing from this equation)

    • @Pursuit.of.Simplicity
      @Pursuit.of.Simplicity  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mostly for convenience but also, dry beans don’t last forever just in their plastic packaging and I don’t use Mylar bags and O2 absorbers at this point so it helps me cycle through my dry beans on a regular basis.
