  • We installed a few Cardo Packtalk sets recently so I figured it would be useful to put a more complete video on installing on for any hesitant about installing one. It’s fairly straight forward but a few things we learned on previous installs might help out if installing for the first time or looking for a good way to install.
The reason we chose Cardo over the Sena is mainly the waterproof rating of the Cardo, and the Sena units that just had mesh that I was looking at getting had a bit of negative reviews.. these I got for a good price and they paired up perfectly and automatically paired when turned back on with the CARDO DMC mesh. The cable organized tabs I bought off Amazon, I can post a link if interested.
Having working coms in tree work is a huge safety and efficiency gain!

Thanks for making this video, I hope to get a couple of these this year. Been running SENA for years but these Cardos look way better. I’m always collaborating with other tree guys and if we waste so much time connecting the Senas it’s ridiculous and on top of that we can have more than 4 guys on a job which sucks to not have everyone connected

No problem! I hear you. I’ve been using these Cardos for a little while now and only remember a couple times that I ever had a small problem and I think it was user error because someone changes something accidentally lol. 99% of the time It’s as simple as turning them on and everyone is talking.

Excellent video of a really clean installation. Thank you! Do you know if the Packtalk units will pair with Sena users?

      Thanks!
I’ve seen videos of people pairing the sena and PackTalks but haven’t had the time to figure it out yet. I work with a guy sometimes that has a Sena and I’m going to try to figure that out soon

    Hi mate. Great video.
I see Cardo has now changed their software to allow you to connect with Sena units via Bluetooth (not mesh as I understand).
Do you know if Cardo can now connect to Protoss Comms??

I like how clean you have your mic installed in the muff, where it comes out. Mine was drilled further from the padding. I used silicone to seal air gaps, for potential compromised hearing protection.
I installed everything inside, because I didn’t want any bulge outside; and to give it a cleaner look. The device sits at the back between the muff and middle back part. The muff no longer sits back in the helmet; but that’s no big deal to me. It barely fits, but there is no contact on my head. Only downside is no access to buttons while wearing it. I don’t use them much, so it’s worth it to me.

Thanks! Appreciate it. I do like the idea of the device being protected on the inside of the helmet. On the Packtalk, since using the voice commands via the “hey Cardo” function is pretty good, the buttons probably only really need to be used right before you put it on anyways. Only think I could see being a drawback might be less range if the antenna can’t pop up.

There is no pop out antenna on the Edge that I have; but ‘might’ have a little less distance capabilities.
“Hey Cardo” works pretty good most times. Only challenge is getting it to stop consistently at a low volume voice when listening to podcasts, when someone talks to me. “Hey Cardo stop music” isn’t 100% on first try. Answer calls is flawless, with “Answer”. I might mount it on outside, but I love how protected it is: hearing how people have wire concerns with brush poking it at. I feel like I deal with poking brush a lot - thus the reason of my choice.

I hear ya- set it up best for what you need is always best! With the way I have it, less than an inch of wire is accessible from the outside and I ended up putting a 3M cable holder on it in the middle of that, and they are wrapped with reinforce tape, so it’s pretty stiff! Love it so far still!

@pierce vaughn can you post a link for the small cable organizers you used? After1.5 years are you still please with the setup and install or have you changed it up?

Hey! Sorry just seeing this. Here is the link I used:
      www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07JCVY58M?psc=1&
They are self adhesive wire clips

Curious how many people or headsets you can connect with and if they disconnect randomly or how well the sound quality holds up over long distance.

According to the specs, it should connect up to 15 units on the DMC mesh connection. The most we typically have connected at the same time is 3. So far it has connected flawless after the first time we paired them! We'll just turn them on and are immediately talking, only time it hasn't is when I accidentally swapped it to Bluetooth intercom when I was using it by myself the day before haha. The connection they say is up to a mile in perfectly open terrain, and they will go farther if you have units in between since they relay through all the devices and give it more range. Typically, on a tree job they have reached as far as we've needed to but have occasionally got some breakup when its through a lot of trees and a larger distance. I usually only pop the antenna up if we are getting farther away. Usually, the only reason I can't hear someone is if they pushed their directional mic out of the way and forgot to put it back down lol. All things considered, I'm really happy with these and would hate to be working without them!

I run The kask helmets with the fighter jet lenses, I run the Sena SMH10 and I link 3 and they run flawlessly. these pFanner helmets look like pain-in-the-ass helmets. pluse they are way hoter then the kask, I run the SMH10 SENAS on one earmuff, everything is on one ear muff, nothing is connected to my helmet. Everything is connected on to the left ear muff and I can take that ear muff flip it up and set it on top of the helmet when it's charging, way easier to maintain and clean and work on!!. the kask helmets versus these helmets, it's a no-brainer, plus we have a way nicer-looking visor and you can get different levels of earmuffs. and visors. kask all day long for the winner 🏆

Have you tried the Protos? They are very light and comfortable. I’ve worn several other styles of Petzl, Kask, Black Diamond ect that are the lightweight rescue or climbing helmet styles and they are also comfortable too so I’m sure those are great. So far I’m really happy with these and haven’t had any problems with them!
