      The thing with MicroSd is that, in this case, this is not a "creative person" oriented laptop, and the vast majority of people that do not make YT videos, or work with professional cameras do not even have contact with full size SD cards. And that's the biggest portion of people. But, a lot of people use microSD cards for expansion in their smartphones, and some other stuff (most smartphones), and having the MicroSD card slot it's a great way to get the stuff from your smartphone card to the pc really fast.

    At least he checks things like going to sleep when it's closed. Reviewers don't seem to check some of those actual real-world issues that drive us crazy, and we buy laptops not knowing them, and next thing you know, you wind up with a laptop that drains itself when powered off, only to have it be 20% battery left every single time you power it up. Similar to cell reception on phones - wifi speed is great, but that doesn't help much when I have no service at half the places I hang out because of lackluster reception.

    • @mini9503
      @mini9503 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      That issue isn't really specific to this laptop. Since Microsoft removed "S3 stage Sleep" from Windows, almost every laptop has the battery drain and random wake-up from sleep issues unless you put it to Hibernate.

      Many reviewers only whine about what they can't have with new releases. Always makes me cringe because this is the first time that I'm purchasing a gaming laptop, and I happen to like this particular laptop here. Just makes me scared to buy what too many reviewers deem as a "trashy" laptop. Hell, I just want to get my feet wet and jump from playing games on my networking laptop to a powerful gaming laptop. Hey Josh, just got my Alienware x15, seems like the sleep issue can be solved by unchecking fast startup in "change what closing the lid does" in the control panel seems to be a problem for many alienware models so probably a case of windows and alienware's lighting not playing nice.

    Sorry, but 4 Hours of battery life and 50C chassis temperature ... ARE what I consider as Deal Breakers, they're not "mere nitpicks" at this price. This is not a budget system, it's x3 times as expensive as your average $800 gaming laptop. Low battery and high temps makes the Alienware X15 a *_Desktop Replacement,_* not a laptop.

      I am looking videos about gaming laptops for a week now, because I would like to buy one. Therefore I have seen a lot of reviews made about actuall 2021 gaming laptops.
      Alienware X15 and X17, Lenovo Legion 5 and 7, Razers machined, Asus and their g15 and m16, HP Omen and so on.
      ALL of them reached 45 to 55 degree celsius during stress tests of gpu and cpu.
      ALL of them had somewhere between 5 to 6 hours battery time max, unless you started to dimm the monior, switched to 60mhz frequency, switched on every possible power saving mode, undervolting and so on.
      So for a gaming laptop no, this is no deal breaker, if you try to be objective of course (and don't forget: The X15 is VERY thin on top of it).
      Show me one which is considerably better in this areas WHITOUT using several tricks. I am waiting, because I might buy it if it exists ;-)

    This is a very good and accurate review, everything is right on the nail.
    I am an x17 owner here,
    I can say that this laptop is really really good. It's really fast, excellent performance. The quality is great, every inch of this laptop feels premium, and it is gorgeous looking. The screen (mine is 4K 120Hz) and Keyboard feel are amazing too.
    On the downside,
    totally agree with Josh. No LED light on the 2nd key is frustrated and the micro-SD card slot is... stupid. Port selection is better here in x17 (I wish they give some more ports on x15 as well). Other than that, I have got some BIOS and driver stability problems, which is understandable since this is an all-new model, but Dell fixed them after some updates. It is pretty stable and fast now.
    I like it so much that I want another one.
    If they address all these issues in the next version, I may get x15 R2 (if my budget still allows), so that it does not overlap with my current x17 R1.

      Same issue with my x17, very annoying high pitched noise even when it's idle. Seems like a common design defect as I talked with many other x17 owners have the same issue. Someone asked support to replace the fan, but the high pitched noise is still there. Some owners told me they fixed it themselves by taping some part of the air intake on the back. I'm surprised that none other x17/x15 youtube reviewers mentioning this problem at all except Josh.

    I watched this review plenty of times before purchasing my laptop and I always thought that I could live with those negatives and that it wasn't a big deal. Until I actually experienced it. The micro-SD decision has to be one of the stupidest things they could have done. The non-lighted secondary functions on the keyboard drives me nuts at the night when I'm using my laptop on my bed with the lights off. Also idk what's up with that sleeping thing but it just won't work. I have to turn off the system every time because there's some bug that won't allow the laptop to sleep. And the speakers, oh my god, why on earth does my $400 phone has better speakers than this $2800 laptop? How much did they save by using this absolutely awful speakers? Not only they're quiet af, but they actually sound whiny and awful. I just don't get it. I definitely don't care about the battery life tbh. But those other things I mentioned are just stupid. Like why?? What an amazing laptop with such annoying and awful things that could have been easily avoided. Oh and I forgot, I agree about the ports on the back barely visible because of the light but I can live with that, what annoys me so bad is that every single time I want to plug in or plug out something, I have to turn the laptop around. Every single time. Idk who's idea was it. Like ports on the sides? Nah too comfortable, let's put them on the back LOL

    My G15 has the same issue. It is awful and will drive most people bananas. The fans can be a quarter as loud as any other laptop but they'll always be ten times as annoying. If a good reviewer says the fans are irritatingly high pitched and you don't work and game with headphones on all the time or are sensitive to acoustics, just spare yourself the disappointment and look elsewhere.

So to have a rear USB connector would allow me to place the hub at the rear and under the rear of a desk and hide all the USB device cables etc giving me a cleaner desk appearance and imo was a stroke of genius

    The poor battery life and single USB-A port were the big issues for me. Like you said, Dell was so close to making the perfect laptop. I loved it, but couldn’t deal with the single USB A port on a 15in gaming laptop. There’s more than enough room for 1 more at the very least.

      So, why is it that my $3000 15in gaming laptop is limited to 1.

    This laptop like most gaming laptops has integrated intel Iris Xe along with the Nvidia.
    I connected 4 external monitors (3 usb-c + 1 HDMI) and intel Xe supports all of the,m with gaming on one primary display.
    However, when Nvidia surround was anabled, (for multi monitor gaming), games span on only 2 external monitors. One on HDMI and other on the USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C with Power Delivery and DisplayPort.
    The builtin screen and any monitors connected to the other 2 usb-c thunderbolt 4 ports go black. No one games on 2 monitors because of the monitor bezels join in the centre (nvidia surround is better with 3 monitors). This renders the dual monitor support by this 'gaming' laptop useless.

      @@pkmachinegun Not to mention is that the x15 (not the x17) has soldered RAM and who knows what RAM is put on there (probably that x16 memory with bad timings EVERY BRAND uses, although on other laptops like Lenovo Legion laptops, you can just replace it and be set to go; here you're stuck with it). Also, Legion laptops have a MUX switch, so after a reboot, you can choose between max gaming performance or better battery life. Dell's MUX is glitchy when using Advanced Optimus; you're often stuck with the same manual reboot as Lenovo (which defeats the purpose of Advanced Optimus). Finally, the Legion 5 Pro and 7 are the only AMD gaming laptops to have a 16:10 QHD screen (the Triton 500 SE and ASUS ROG Zephyrus M16 are Intel based), which is night and day compared to 16:9.

    I've been using my x15 for a month now and I just saw this video. First off all this is a great laptop.
    Here are some stuff that I can think of about this laptop;
    I had a lot of glitches when I first got it but it was fixed after the Windows updates. I never used a laptop with a black keyboard and I would prefer a white one definitely but is not a big deal. It gets dusty very quick. About the sleep timing that was mentioned, I never experienced that much of a long time. Sure, its definitely longer than the super fast macbooks but its still fast for me. It takes like 30 seconds to turn off the lights and another 35-45 seconds to turn off the fans. That is not a big deal for me. If I have a hurry I just turn off the lid and put it in the bag without waiting it. About the ports on the back, yes, having a side usb/type c port would be great but in terms of looks this one is really really clean and good. I think even though having a USB port on the side would be better I would go for this design just because of the looks. Also it was told that the speakers were good in the video and no it isn't, its absolutely trash. It's okay in terms of volume of the sound but the quality is really very bad. My older m15 R2 had better speakers. I think these are what I can tell about this laptop as of now. Im very happy with this laptop. If there is any questions that anyone want to ask just ask them, ill try answering them.

      Thanks for giving us an insight into your laptop. I'm looking to get the x15 R2 version for my first gaming laptop but am concerned about issues like some people have mentioned about keyboard failures and other quality control. I looked at this model at the store and it's gorgeous and the build quality is superior to the Asus, Lenovo Legion, MSI, Acer and HP gaming laptops. Only other brand that is sleeker and more modern is the Razer Blade 15 but that model on display had a very dim screen (nits) and for that price is crazy.
      My question is how loud are the fans when they kick on during intense gaming sessions? Any current issues that you are having lately?

      @@Goalier95 so about the failures, if you have any problems with that you can always contact support, and I know there are loads of Alienwares with problems, but as I said, support is really good.
      About the fans loudness, I normally play with headphones so I dont hear them while playing, but without them they are so loud. You can turn them to be balanced rather than full speed which is fine in terms of loudness.
