  • After a visit to the doctor, I had to take a step back and seriously ask myself, "Am I drinking too much?"
    Is there such a thing as drinking too much without being an alcoholic? How much should I be drinking? How does over drinking effect your health? In this episode I open up about my health journey as well as share my thoughts on how much I was drinking.

    This is one of the most important episodes. I've been like you, drinking 7 days a week, 2-3 drinks a night, discovering new whiskey, not alcoholic, but habitual & unhealthy. Also - going through stress and having anxiety and high blood pressure and not great sleep. My conclusion was the same: I too have been deciding to drink during the weekend. One of my friends has a theme: "Everything in moderation." I used to poo-poo that, but I think it is an important theme. Here's to your health (and everyone who enjoys your videos!)

    Hi Randy, Master Blender Nancy Fraley here. Wow, this is hands-down THE BEST whiskey-related TH-cam episode I have ever seen! I cannot thank you enough for addressing this issue so openly and honestly. As someone who has to work with alcohol every day, often analyzing anywhere from 120 to 200 Bourbon & other whiskey barrels at cask strength per day by nosing and tasting, the negative physiological effects of alcohol can be cumulative over time. It does not matter if you are tasting and spitting. One does not "get drunk" doing this over the course of a work-day as long as one is spitting, but a compromised immune system as well as the depletion of overall vitality and strength over time are the long-term effects.
    I've had a number of health issues in the past few years which I know are directly related to my work. For many years now, I've wanted to address this issue and reach out to others of us who work in the industry and whose job entails working with high proof alcohol on a daily basis, who quite often experience the negative health effects (but who are not necessarily alcoholics either). I haven't known exactly how to go about this, but this is inspiring me to find some sort of way to address the issue. At any rate, I commend you for squarely addressing this topic for the Bourbon connoisseur world. While not a "fun" topic, it is truly a matter of life and death. Many thanks my friend! Here's to your good health and longevity! 😍

    • @BourbonRealTalk
      @BourbonRealTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@maddevil7474 If you are tasting and spitting 120-200 cask strength barrels a day you are still investing enough ethanol to have an impact on your health. I have done just 25 in a day and started to feel buzzed, so 200 would be enough.

      @@maddevil7474 There are most definitely negative health effects if you taste and spit for your work every day, and they are cumulative over time. Sorry if I didn't make that clear enough.

    When I first saw this title I was thinking I wasn’t going to watch. Then thought I probably need to. I have enjoyed bourbon for years but was more into IPAs etc. Then the pandemic hit and I discovered whiskey tube such as the Bourbon Junkies, Mash and Drum etc. I started collecting and drinking. Even though I didn’t think Covid would get me there was a certain fatalistic “drink up today because tomorrow we may die” mantra in my head. And that mantra was still there by late 2021 when my life was back to normal. So I started to back off. But the habits had become engrained. Your video gave me the clarity that I needed. What is ironic is my wife is 31 years sober. And yes she puts up with me. I don’t want to tip that scale to the point that I have to join her. And even though I really don’t think that would happen, my sleep and my heath have suffered. Sipping a little less makes sense.

I’m a marathoner, father of 4, and superintendent on a busy jobsite 5-6 days a week. In the past I’ve been good about not drinking during the week but I was definitely binge drinking on the weekends more so before I got into bourbon. Believe it or not becoming a bourbon drinker has helped me drink less because I focus on quality more over quantity. I appreciate this real talk and shared with a few friends that I know can relate to it as well. Keep up the good work

  • @popskull42

    People get very hung up on the label "alcoholic." It's simpler and better to ask if you have a problem with alcohol. If it affects your health, your work, your family, or your happiness, you have a problem. This is better in many ways because even if you drink once a month but that one time you get blackout drunk and drive, it's a problem. Or if that one time you wreak havoc on your marriage, that's a problem. Plus, problems are relatively easy to fix compared to managing alcoholism and can usually be done on your own or with therapy if the reason for the problem is emotional/trauma-based.

    • @BourbonRealTalk
      @BourbonRealTalk  ปีที่แล้ว

      Solid points! I think this is why I wanted to do this piece. If you compare your life to what you read about alcoholism it is easy to dismiss your drinking as not a "problem", when you really should make some changes.

    • @BourbonRealTalk
      @BourbonRealTalk  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jpvidrine It is a marketing term not a legal description, so it can mean anything. In the case of Old Forester it means they are using a recipe that was from before prohibition, or mimicking some process that was from before prohibition. For instance the 1910 comes from a warehouse fire that damaged barrels. They rebarreled the whiskey to prevent leakage, so 1910 is aged in two barrels. It is more marketing than historically accurate because the second barrel they use is just a toasted barrel, and the original 1910 second barrel was not. Sometimes it means they use a process that has gone by the wayside, like a pot still or cypress fermentation tanks. If there is one in particular you are interested in let me know and I can give you a specific answer.

    I drink three pours of approx 1.5 ounces per night and absolutely no more than that. I also don't drink to get a buzz or for any stress/anxiety relief but simply to enjoy the taste. Some days I drink less or not at all but it's never more than three

      Just make sure you are having you blood work done regularly, and be honest with your doctor about your intake. 3 drinks a day and 21 a week around the equivalent that I was drinking, and it did have an impact. Cheers!

      @@BourbonRealTalk What my idea was is to take my random generator app (I use one called Randomizer) and create a list named "How many pours?" with 3 options: Zero, Two, and Three. Have it set to display one random result per day and that will be how many pours you can have on that day. That way it's totally random and a lot less cold turkey than going weekends only.

    Thank you Randy. As other have said this is such an important topic. Another important thing to pay attention to is what a Portion Size is for your drink. Filling the glen to the top is not 1 drink... but more like 4. I made a personal rule that on bad days when everything seems to go wrong and I say I can't wait to get home and have a drink I purposefully DO NOT drink. I don't want to fall into the habit of reaching for alcohol to sooth my stress. I have seen what addiction can do to family and friends and I want to be conscious of what I consume. Keep up the great work you are doing. And know that we all love you and are her for you. ❤

    I'm following your lead. I'm a middle-aged guy who did 20 years in the Army. Drinking became natural and whiskey became an genuine fascination. Now I need to manage my consumption. I locked my goodies up and my wife pops it open on weekends according to a schedule. This is preventing me from casual sipping throughout the week. So far so good.

    I️ love bourbon but it has caused some issues for me including elevated heart rate, I️ now have issues with sleep apnea, I️ have elevated liver enzyme, bloating and water retention, and high blood pressure. I️ still have a pour or two during the week but I️ have cut way way back. bourbon/whisky is enjoyable but you HAVE to drink it responsibly because it will without a doubt have negative downsides on your health if you over do it.
