  • Watch the gorgeous Scimitar-Horned Oryx, Dama Gazelle, and Addax!! One of the Exotic Wildlife Association's greatest success stories is that of the 3 species. Nearly extinct in the wild, these 3 amigos are absolutely thriving in Texas. Hear more from EWA's Executive Director, Charly Seale and EWA Member, Jimmy Gregory.

I am sure there are areas in these animals' native lands where reintroduction into the wild would just lead to poaching to extinction. So glad you guys are doing this great work.

yes and a lot of other area in the native habitat were we could reintroduce them and try to have a growing population
      it's quite "normal"
you create a reserve or put somes rangers into a reserve and that drasticly reduce poaching, at least for non really profitable species unlike elephant and rhino that can bring so much money that even with rangers arounds, poacher will hunt those
it's pointless to try to have a viable population in captivity if you don't reintroduce these animals in the wild
and america don't really deserve to be acclaimed for this effort (which is a really good one and will, i hope, save theses species), we can't say congratulation USA you mannage to do one good things for nature when
american are amoung the biggest importator of wildlife product from Africa (with a lot of them that go to Africa to hunt giraffes, antilopes, lions, buffaloes, even rhinos and elephants) and have a lot of captive big cat such as tigers, jaguars, leopards and lions as well as bears and wolves in captivity in cage or in "ranch", people can buy a tiger or a lion and have one in bad conditions like if they bought a cat
      (tiger king for exemple)
and is a big part of poaching
scheme (to import and export "products" of all continent, and US are also a big client of those products)
USA have a lot of private zoo that are quite bad and doesn't respect the codes, recommendation and minimal ethic toward the animals
USA have i think one of the record for extinct species
passenger pigeon, Carolina parakeet, eastern puma, ivory billed woodpecker, Californian gryzzly, Mexican grizzly, Sea mink etc
and the plain bison, forest bison gryzzly, wolves, puma, prairies dog, Californian condor, somes deer and bighorn sheeps as well asyour icon the bald eagle all passed at the edge of extinction and are still generally very low population in just a fraction of their former range
in three hundred years you mannaged to do nearly as much dammage to your wildlife, and drive more species to extinction, than Europe in 5000years,
      what a performance
      sorry for the bad english

And the American cheetah, was not an African/Asian cheetah that happened to migrate to North America, but it was closely related to the puma/mountain lion, and evolved many true cheetah characteristics. The pronghorn antelope developed it's great speed to get away from the American cheetah.

And be ready to pay $10k USD for the privilege to hunt one on private land, eat the meat, and mount the horns. Not that I’m against that. Hunting and conservation are well and thriving in Texas. However, it can be expensive. In fact, they would not be thriving if not for U.S. (Texas!) hunters and conservationists in the first place. They were brought to Texas ranches in the first place, with the expressed intention of being able to hunt them here instead of traveling to far away lands.

especially for a species that is the symbol of endangerde wildlife
it's already really discutable to do that with antelopes
it's still killing for the pleasure of killing, it's not a sport (in captivity, no fear of human, they can't escape, you are in a car with a gun), it's just barbarity
it's even worse than that, it's raising animal in captivity to kill them for the fun of it
i know that it save the species but
doing a photo safari is also an option even a better one
those game hunting reserve can still be usefull for zoo if zoo have the right to take any animals they want in these park to have better genetic in their population
and also zoo can place animals when they're overcrowded, like somes male southern white rhinoceros (yes somes species only reproduce if they're more female than male but it's 50% chance to have a male so zoo often have to many male of somes species such as lions, gorillas, elephants etc)
the hunting park can't kill them but it gave more "real safari adventure" vibes

Opposition by animal rights groups needs to be overcome first, so reason isn't relevant. Any successful reintroductions will be welcomed by the local population as on the hoof dietary supplement and hunted and devoured as soon as possible, the cause of their extinction in the first place. By reinstating colonisation and the game protection and hunting managemnt systems that historically protected these species from the natives exploitation they might nave a chance Butt such forward thinking virtue seeking progress would be politically unacceptable. Principles preferring extinctions predominate.

They are absolutely being raised so that we can hunt them and if they are not being hunted they are going extinct. That is how all conservation efforts are funded. Are you going to pay for it with never ending payments so that a tiny percentage do not have to be shot by hunters?
These are prey animals which is why they are inherently skittish, fast and breed like crazy and mature very quickly. The vast majority escape predation and go on to breed multiple times. You are welcome to buy thousands of acres and some of these animals and ban all hunting. How you fund it I have no idea, that's for you to figure out.

The only, ONLY reason these species as well as species of rhinos, lions, elephants, and other African animals as well as animals in north america and Europe haven't gone extinct or arent extremely close to it is because people will pay to hunt them, that money they pay goes towards protection from poachers, land for them to be on, food and medicine for the animals, etc. There is nothing wrong with the hunting of animals, if you abide by the laws and regulations put in place. Poachers do not abide by said things and want the animals to stop being commercialy hunted so they can kill them and take what they want at the animals expense. Legal and sport hunting shows respect to the animals and allows them to further live on.

The reason people "trophy" hunt is you want to take the oldest, most of the time the biggest, individual out of the herd because they've spread their genes already. You don't want to take whatever comes in front of you because that will diminish genetic diversity and fitness of the local population. I don't want to seem like I'm talking down to you just want to inform you. No one who willingly abides by hunting laws and regulations trophy hunts.
