I have been pleasantly surprised by Brady's play. She has really upped her game. Her hands, footwork and confidence have improved a lot. She has been doing things that don't show up on the stat sheet, like screens, keeping balls alive by tipping ball to her teammates, hustling for loose balls.etc. With Jana and Strong in the fold it no doubt has inspired her to improve. That's what competition does for a team.
    Nice take brudda.

I have to disagree about Ice. Her hands are pretty bad, at least through the first three games. She has a hard time receiving the ball under the basket. She often bobbles the ball and gets stripped. She isn't scoring in the paint as a result. Three turnovers last game and that's more than you'd like to see from someone who isn't a ball handler. No complaints about what she's doing outside the paint. She's playing with lots of intensity and hustle. So far, they haven't been able to post up Ice, Sarah or Jana effectively. I'm hoping all three bigs will become more effective in the paint in time but of course, they all come in with very little experience. I'm kind of afraid that all of them will keep looking for outside shots, since that's mostly what they are doing now.

@@jwa725 Fair assessment. I did notice that, like you said, they struggled as a team to work it in cleanly, but I'm not sure if that's a guard-passing issue or a big-receiving problem.

I was able to dig up HS footage of Cheli on YT and she played basically a point forward. And she was a very prolific scorer (when on the court) she had an injury her senior year but she still wanted to play so they limited her min, hence she did not have crazy stats. I am not sure she passed Q yet, but in the UNC game with Foul issues for Ice I think her size (Cheli is 6'2") was wanted, and her defense in HS she was a very good defensive player. Her HS has not really tracked stats the last 2 years but as a sophomore she average 3 steals per game and shot 38% from 3pt. Time will tell when they play smaller teams if she is still ahead of Q. She played on basically one of the top 2-3 teams in her state (California) yet she was the primary engine along with her teammate Woliczko who is the #6 player in the class of 2026. Cheli often ran point when on the floor.

  • @glarris1

Eventually, Azzi will start over Ash. Shade struggles to play at her own pace against certain types of guards. Cheli is already ahead of Q because she can impact the game in more ways than Q. Q was clearly in the doghouse against UNC, otherwise she would have played as she is a true sniper. The problem is that she makes mistakes a sophomore should not make (not boxing out, not cutting, missing assignments on D), and it doesn’t yet feel like her game, focus and skills advanced over the off season.
I think Geno likes using KK and El Alfy as game changers off the bench. In their own way, each of them has that instant impact and energy that AG always brought to the floor. For that reason ( plus the fact that the big girl gets a lot of fouls called on her), I think Ice will steady the ship (and her nerves) and leverage her ability to consistently hit the 17 footer and the 3, to cement her role as a starter this year despite the fact that Jana’s post skill set is superior. If Patterson has - we hope- developed any offensive skills ( we hope), then she can give the front court more depth, brawn and of course fouls-to-give.
The best unit right now is kk- Paige - Chen- Strong - EL Alfy with Kk focused on her d and running the offense. Eventually, Azzi will replace Chen or KK here depending on circumstances. And if Geno needs more length? Add AG or Cheli for KK or Chen (leaving in Azzi at shooting guard).
My goodness, if AG could shoot the 3 ( she cannot, alas) and CD were healthy, this team would be insane. lol.

I have a different look on the starting 5 once Azzi comes back. I have Paige, Azzi, Chen, Strong and Brady (unless Jana shows more on the court). Geno will want scorers in the game, especially in games that matter the most like SC, Notre Dame games. Q is good but she needs to be versatile more or else she’s going to end up staying on the bench. I’m not worry about Shade. She had an off night. She’ll get better. KK is better off the bench. Geno likes her but trust Chen more due to experience.

Ice is the best starter right now but the Strong/El Afy high-low is going to become legendary over the next 4 years.
Despite what this video says about rotation, UConn needs a bigger rotation As the wounded return, Geno will figure out how to integrate them and they should make it easier to keep getting buckets while Strong and Paige rest.

We have so much potential. Chris needs to forego her knitting class with Jana, and get her into rebounding school as she was being pushed. Around. And ballet class to work on her footwork. Sarah, she is strong. Ayanna can give us the post play. Someone please tell me why I feel hesitant when I see the ball in hands of Ice. Also when will our spark off the bench will return? I’m a huge UCONN fan and do acknowledged that Bueckers was great on the night and Sarah Strong was good most of the time. However UCONN must improve or they will be beaten by USC on 12-21-2024. They were poor against the UNC zone. Their perimeter D was not good either and their shooting from 3 was also poor at 24%. UCONN is screaming for Fudd’s return as Shade is too dam streaky. Was surprised that Chen was so fowl prone she ended up with 5 fowls. However, I still see Q coming in handy later in other big games vs big guards.

In all fairness, Shade is or has been told to pass off to Paige B., Shade is still far better than Fudd. Strong did the dirty work for PB, allowing her to score 29 points in 37 minutes. Notice how PB was limited in the second half, she was tired. Keep playing her all those minutes, Geno. You're going to set PB up for fatigue and injury. Only TWO players in double digit scoring, only five bench points will NOT get them far against Power Five teams. South Carolina, USC, Texas, Notre Dame, will have UConn for lunch.

If a player doesn't get to play it usually means Geno is not pleased with her DEFENSE. He understands that any player can have an off night shooting, but, as he has said many times, "you can always play defense." So I expect Q will need to work harder on defense to get those minutes. Also, I was not happy to see Strong jacking up so many threes. But apparently Geno is okay with that, at least in the near term. The shooting for UConn is kinda nuts if they all play to their potential ...I think first big game vs ranked team might have given many of them some nerves. They also at times were too unselfish giving up some open shots, but I will take that any day if I was the coach.

Chelli and Ziebell need some time to develop the confidence and minor skills to play with the team. Qadence knows her role and can do it. One could say the same of Caitlin, but she's so far along that she fits in perfectly already. So, get Azzie back, maybe Griffin and Patterson (some day) and all of them will be into it. But for now, Qadence, and even K.K. have to sit a bit to give Chen, Chelli, and Ziebell some time. It's all working well too.
Morgan is looking really good because she's playing to her strengths and not doing other things badly.
Ziebell just needs to get her shot going, and she'll be fine too. She's very similar to Qadence from last year.
The team has fit together so perfectly that it's amazing. Strong and El Alfy know their roles and are doing well.

      @alanlee3236 หลายเดือนก่อน

Good question. From my observation, it was 2 things: 1) Shade didn't get going from outside. I think she hasn't found her rhythm to get in her misses. What I mean is that when her shot isn't falling, she tends to take herself out of the offensive flow. For this game, Paige, Sarah, Kaitlyn were hitting from outside early. When they did that it forced UNC to switch to a zone late 2nd quarter to deny easy shots. Paige was able to make her own shots. The team found Sarah 7 times on the perimeter for easy 3's (all of which she missed BTW, probably because it was a homecoming for her). Even Kaitlyn had a couple. I think Coach Banghart focused on keeping a body on Ashlynn and so she didn't get those same open looks, which she would bury. She never adjusted to the coverage. Maybe she stopped looking to shoot (only 7 shots in total). I don't know if she had a single drive to the basket.
Second, with UNC in a zone, there were fewer open shots and we weren't successful scoring in the lane after the 3rd quarter. We couldn't throw the ball inside, let the defense collapse, then kick it out again. That's what will ultimately happen one we figure out how to consistently pass the ball inside.
