I know this is an older Podcast, but loved and resonated with the originally not into older classic songs for a bass and being over obsessed with chops as a younger player. Years obsessing over Primus Marcus Miller Victor Wooten and all things bass centered. It wasn’t until paying attention to Stevie wonder and Nate Watts playing did I get my old school itch and now I love and will jam a root and fifth bass line like nobody’s business.

Your talk about the Badu album reminded me of an interview where Joni Mitchell was talking about how she found Jaco: she said she asked a bassist at an audition: just play a D there… the bassist said: I can’t do that, it’s not the root… she replied: it will be if you play it there… 😉😎

He told her to go talk to this guy in Florida… he was crazy and he’d play that, even if you don’t ask him to… so she did: welcome Jaco… 😎😊

100%. Grove I think more of rhythm, note duration, placement and pocket. Victor Wooten can grove on one note and make the audience move. Chops I think more of sophisticated techniques, melodic lines and harmony.

I heard something helpful that when you take a Myers Briggs or other test, it's best not to look at it as what you are but more what your weak points are that you should work to improve. Not that I've been good at taking that advice.

That’s an easy answer, the groove.

40:38 Does that mean those who are around 60 or so are not welcome here?

The best example of all groove no chops I can think of is Leezy from Khruangbin, but that's the thing about chops, they don't always show, you can't hide groove.

I appreciated the visionary / idea generators and do-ers conversation. Always like learning strategy and such from Scott. :)

Chops literally don’t matter for bass

Freeform jazz has no discernible groove. It's all chops. One billion notes and no artistry.
