- (9 Dec 2018) Tens of thousands of people on Sunday followed the call of right-wing Hindu nationalist group Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP), or the World Hindu Council, to demand the construction of a Hindu temple on the ruins of a disputed 16th century mosque in the northern Indian city of Ayodhya.
Rally goers on Sunday filled up the Ram Lila Ground and surrounding streets in New Delhi, chanting slogans hailing Hindu gods Ram and Shiva.
A congregation of Hindu priests, who chaired the gathering, called on attendees to fight for the construction of a Ram temple.
Babri mosque was demolished by a Hindu mob on December 6, 1992, sparking deadly Hindu-Muslim violence.
The matter is currently with the Supreme Court, which will hear a batch of petitions filed by Hindu and Muslim groups in January next year.
Hindu hard-liners are building pressure on Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government to move quickly on the issue, ahead of the next national elections due before May.
