That app map doesn't label enough facilities, so I HIGHLY recommend a paper map to go along with the app (sorry). The paper map has a comprehensive list of rides and restaurants. You can circle the attractions that you want to visit so you get a better perspective of which are in close proximity. This helps to avoid walking all over when another ride is close by. The app will show you where you are and you can compare with your prepared paper map. My opinion--they need to upgrade the app so that you can touch the screen and have it tell you what every building is. They also need better signs in the park.
So true. The app map isn't good. That's true at all parks. I will always use a paper map. More user friendly, more info, easier to find things. If the issue is that you don't look cool if you use a paper map, I gave up trying to look cool a long time ago.
Always get a paper map, having a physical map incase your phone dies or your service craps out can be a huge help. Not to mention it also serves as a free souvenir. Been going to theme parks my whole life, and I always get a paper map regardless if I use it or not.
Another rookie mistake, not coming with a game plan. So many families or groups end up standing around deciding what to do next even when they know the park. You can always change your plan, but only if you have one to begin with.
It drives me crazy that so many people attend the parks with their own packed lunches too. I think it's a rookie mistake. The amazing selection of restaurants and food/drink on offer within all the parks is something everyone should be supporting. Without the food, there is NO experience.
@@blackbeard6423 eating at the parks can be super expensive, especially if you are there with family. Can easily cost 100 dollars a day for a family of 4. I usually go to parks by myself and I still bring a lunch. I’d rather not spend 30-40 dollars for a couple meals when I can just go back to my car and have the same or more amount of food for free
Knockturn Alley was my saving grace when we visited a month ago. I developed a very intense migraine and hung out in there for almost an hour in the dark.
I absolutely LOVE that there isint a single sign to diagonal alley and also that there are very few signs for knockturn alley. It disperses the crowds, makes it feel more of a secret, and keeps it true to the books. I hope they never put signs!
For the fashion tip I must say there is a way to be fashionable and comfortable! Especially for those who prefer a feminine style! Cute skirts and sun dresses with slip shorts under is perfect!
Just a heads up, if you want to ride the front row on Velocicoaster, do standby line, do not use single rider line. They will fill you wherever there’s an empty seat on the coaster, and that doesn’t guarantee it will be the front row. BTW, front row on Velocicoaster is where it’s at, way too much fun!
I agree. On many coasters, back is best. Velocicoaster is one of the rare ones that is better in front. Also, the single rider line often can take longer than the regular line on this ride. They work on other rides, but not as much on Velocicoaster.
I definitely utilized the single rider lines when I went on vacation with my wife because she’s not a fan of rides. It is a great 👍 perk as I walked straight on many rides without wait times. I love single riders line ❤️❤️
Did it work well for Islands of Adventures? Im more of a roller coaster rider so I wanted to do single rider there and fast express for us both for Universal since Im told those rides are more simulators. Please advise Thanks
It took us at least 3 days to find Nocturne Alley and we had to ask a TM to find it. I laughed out loud when you said it took you a year. I felt so much better!!! I also said out loud standing in London, “Where is everyone going?” I had done research so I knew what existed, but I did not know how to find it. These are good tips for anyone!!!!
You're brave. I had to take my dad's friend's daughters with me when I was there. I would have smuggled a cyanide poison pill. If one of them shouted out "Where is Diagon Alley?" I'd eat the pill! 😅😁
I 'found' it -my first trip. It was a dark area, turned out to be cooler, plus, all the cool things to do. Later I heard people asking where Nocturne Alley is, when they started describing what was there I showed them but told them I didn't know it had a Name!
We are UOA passholders and are pretty good at budgeting and knowing the ins & outs, BUT....your tip on the collapsible cups is GENIUS! And...we love watching your videos!
I definitely made the Diagon Alley mistake my first visit. We ended up at King's Cross station and went to Hogsmead instead. I didn't realize we missed it until we got back home then I told my husband we had to go back the next year to make it up. Also, didn't know anything about Noctourn Alley until last year. We walked through there for the first time in November.
Ok, those cups are genius. I've avoided getting a freestyle cup 'cause I love being able to navigate the parks and rides hands-free with only a fanny pack. But I also don't enjoy standing in line at a food cart just to ask for a water cup and then having to ditch it right away. These collapsible ones will fit in the fanny pack! Great idea!!
Hey --- paper maps are a great free souvenir!! Regarding the "secret" Diagon Alley entrance ---- when I've visited, I often have seen a Universal employee stationed there to point out the entrance to first timers. It's actually kind of funny to hear someone say -- "Here's the secret entrance!!" In a loud voice.
I just started to watch your videos and find them very helpful. I have an adult son with autism. We just recently took him to Universal Studios in Florida. It was our first time there. Perhaps you can put together a video with suggestions on the best way to go to Universal Studios for adults and children with sensory issues. It would have made our trip a little less stressful. The staff at Universal are great and understanding. It would be great to know exactly where the best quiet areas are and which attractions are the least loud, fast, and furious. Thanks
Possibly the worst place you can take an autistic child during high season. If your son is dead set on going, perhaps a winter trip might be more appropriate? There is simply no way you can cater to his needs when it is so packed, hot, noisy, and just...you know...everything like that.
@@blackbeard6423 Thank you for advice. We went toward end of September to Universal. Next visit we will try toward end of January. We try to schedule visits to themed parks when most of the kids are in school. We just wanted to know where the best quiet places are in Universal. We know when we go to Disney World where many of the quiet areas are. Universal is still new to us. Once again thank you for your advice.
That’s a great tip with the collapsible cups! I got a small tactical sling bag to keep things compact and that is such a god tier tip. I would have never thought about that. Great job!
Since you do valet so much, you've forgotten a BIG rookie mistake so many make everyday!!! Don't forget to take a picture of where you parked. After a long day in the hot sun you may forget if you are in Kong, Spider-man, or ET. Having a photo in your phone (AND the app), can save you TONS of time walking around the garages setting off your car alarm trying to figure out if you are even on the right floor.
I work at Universal and two big mistakes is people not paying attention to operating hours or attraction closures. I had a father and son a couple months back get upset because the parks closed at 6 (IOA) and 7(USF) and all I could do was direct them to guest services in the next area. Even when we have walls up to indicate ‘this attraction is closed for refurbishment’ somehow guests will still assume they can ride it. Heck sometimes guests will be a little, well, dumb on where something is logically going to be. They always assume the dinosaur rides are in Toon Lagoon instead of Jurassic Park. Another mistake is not knowing the actual name of the places you’re going to. I’ve had quite a number of guests not be able to tell me what they’re looking for but eventually gave me one word that told me exactly what they’re looking for and I have to tell them it’s back in the direction they just came from, at the other side of the park where there’s no short way over or it’s in the other park altogether. Sometimes team members will give wrong directions by mistake because of this. I remember one where the guest was trying to get to their table serve restaurant for dinner and my coworker started giving the guest directions to Confisco instead of Mythos. Even though I was busy helping get another guest order at the time I quickly wrapped that up and gave the guest the correct directions to get to Mythos. Yes some team members mix places up as well, especially those two restaurants. I even had a team member not know how to point guests to Marvel even though we are right next to them.
I see all those mistakes too. I've been going to Orlando every third year since 1990 - I think I know what I'm talking about. The most Rookie mistake I see, Douglas Freer, are people who insist on bringing their own food into the parks. They say they do it to save money and that they're being "clever" but then they leave without having sampled the incredible food at all the restaurants on offer. I think everyone should spend at least half their day exploring all the options that there are.
Going early tip, ya we stayed on property and arrived prior to park opening along with every other family who stayed on property. It was insanely crowded, like a mosh pit at a Miley Cyrus concert crowded. Then after pushing through the mosh pit (after waiting in line for transportation to the park and another line to enter park) we got to wait in more lines at rides because the rides don't open until much later. Miserable experience overall.
Another Rookie mistake not standing on the right side of the walkway and being right in the way with a sudden stop. Or on the moving walkways move to one side.
Thanks for the info. Im happy to say that with a lot of your videos and others, I probably avoided around 85% of the mistakes you mentioned. The one thing I was guilty of was carrying a large backpack, but I remedied that on the next day anyway. I just got back and thanks to you and others, me any my friends vacay was a blast.
Hey, I liked the paper map! Lol I did a lot of research and I found myself flustered when I got there because if the crowds. Once I walked around a bit it was easy.
Oh, I did a couple of those mistakes 🤣. The one that bugs me is people in queues who don't mark their tickets and then spend 20 minutes trying to work out who's ticket is who's and hold the queue up.
Thank you for a great video! I’ll be flying over and visiting in two weeks to celebrate my graduation. Last time I visited Universal was in 2013 so this video helped me a lot to refresh important tips!
This was really helpful. Our main goal is to do the Harry Potter areas, so knowing where the entrances are is a great start. And I love the collapsible cup idea.
You are a rookie - those that know the parks well always use an app. To be seen with a map (publicly) is one of the worst ways to embarrass yourself in front of the locals
Just watched this now. That link to the cup was clutch!! We bought water last time because all I carry is a Fanny pack. That’s gonna fit nicely in there for us to share! Life saver!
I really love the videos you make! I am planning to go to Universal in a couple of months and I want to make the most out of my trip! Your videos have really given me some great tips and tricks! Thanks again :)
I dunno if I feel like there are mistakes, at least to me. I feel like each person explores the park the way they like, like if someone wants to wonder around with a map, that's up to them, or if they want to go later in the day. It's up to the person what they are more comfortable with. O.o
You clearly are a rookie, thanks for letting the community know. I’ll be laughing as I get my extras and you are stuck in the parking lot with everyone else who thought they were also above doing things properly and decently.
Fanny pack, collapsible cup, and most importantly ORDERING MOBILE ORDER FOOD!!!!! Park was kinda crowded for my liking on Monday and Tuesday but oh well. I’m a non crowd kinda person from Colorado so the heat and crowds was a downer.
These videos are insanely helpful! I was a Disney guy way before moving to Florida, but this December I got my wife and I a Harry Potter vacation package to celebrate our 3rd year of marriage. I am not a know it all like in Walt Disney World! With Disney suspending the higher tiers of APs, we may end up getting UOAP if all goes well and I have you and Nikki to thank!
I love those paper maps. I collect them, but also, they are more user friendly than what you get on apps. The app is still good for some other things though.
We made the first and 2nd mistake the first day at Universal. We went in earlier the 2nd day (they let you in 15 minutes before the opening) and boy that made a huge difference. We did our favorite rides couple times because there were not too many people there yet.
One huge one you forgot, not bringing and reapplying sunscreen throughout the day!!!! Also bring a small med kit with a chaffe stick, Bandaids, headache medicine, stomach medicine, blister stick, flossers and eye drops!!!!!
Other rookie mistakes: 1) If you are wanting to go straight to Gringotts, use the 2nd Diagon Alley entrance beyond the 1st one. 2) Don’t have the entire family or group at the lockers. Send a person or two with all the belongings. This is especially bad at Mummy and Gringotts. 3) Not using the hidden lockers at Gringotts. You pass them when you exit the ride itself. These are almost never utilized as everyone crowds into that little room. Including annoying group members who aren’t lockering anything. 4) Your group/family walking 4-8 abreast, creating a human wall. Break it up a little and walk in 2s or 3s, or expect to get pushed out of the way by faster walking people. 5) Standing on the left on the moving walkways after security and before CityWalk. That’s the passing lane.
Appreciate all the tips - most were helpful for our visit last Monday. *Do need to add that we thought we were doing everything right by planning, uploading our tickets, express and cc info into the app. On rides where you are forced to locker your phone, you either cant use express or you have to find and go stand in line for them to print you a paper express for scanning. HUGE waste of time. Also, tried to do a mobile food order at Burger Digs and the app kept giving me error stating my cc info was wrong. I entered everything again and still didn't work. Spent 90 min in line for a really lousy burger and salad. We couldn't figure out what was wrong - as the card was working if I just handed it to the cashier. When we got outside the park, I looked at the app again and magically all my information was restored. I asked a TM and she said it was the WIFI! When the park is busy and the wifi gets jammed up with so many users it causes issues like this so heads up. Its so disappointing that we lost hours of time with this nonsense since we only had 1 day to try and see both parks.
Yeah they always say get off the parks Wi-Fi as it’s bogged down with everyone else using it. I’ve learn a TON of tips from multiple outlets on how to streamline waits and eat at “off peak” times. It’s busy out there 🫤
We went to Universal on wed. It was a poop show. Rides kept breaking down. On line for hulk for 45 min. Ride broke down. Went over to Harry Potter area did 3 rides. Went to volocoaster broke down. Had to be evacuated off off Kong.
This is a trip for getting to the park. If you are renting a car, Florida has toll roads to save travel time the Florida DOT sells temporary toll fast passes and you can buy them in the Orlando Airport.
Hey Rick-just found out Hogwarts Express will be closed during our trip. This is a once in a lifetime trip for myself and my daughter to come just the two of us and we’re mainly coming for Harry Potter. Have you ever heard of them getting enough complaints or “respectful” requests that they adjust their refurb schedule? This seems like a bizarre one to do during the summer.
Same here. I’ll be there smack dab in the middle of the dates it’s closed. We got the Harry Potter package and it will be our first time going to HP world too. I’m sooo bummed! First, Mummy and now the Hogwarts Express. 😩
My family went for the very first time 4 months ago....mainly for the Wizarding World just like you! I would say don't worry too much about the shutdown. We rode the Express both ways to get both shows, but........but I promise that was the least of the excitement of being there! You will be so immersed in everything else around you once you get there, the disappointment of that being shut down will fade quickly!!! I'm sorry for the bad timing for you and your daughter, but to be honest, that was probably my family's least fave ride/experience....enjoyable, but not extremely noteworthy. Hope y'all have a wonderful trip full of great memories!
@@ryverwynd she will only be thinking about the Hogwarts express - you’ve been on it - good for you. But there are many out there with a dream, a lifetimes ambition to get on it. Think of those people and their feelings. Thank you.
Be aware that you cannot access Volcano Bay on an electric scooter. I bought a 3 park pass and never made to Volcano Bay because of the walking. I also found out many of the rides have many stairs. I had to wait in long lines for elevator for Hogwarts train when I had an express pass. Frustrating….one tiny elevator is insufficient for the job. I thought signage was poor. The clearest signs were in Whoville.😢it was my first time ever needing a scooter so I didn’t anticipate the need for elevators for rides, thinking there would be ramps.
Absolutely spent too much time trying to find Diagon Alley last year. From across the park I could see the dragon but when we got close, she disappeared. I was so mad!
Thank you, Eloisa. I wish to thank you for your words. If you need more advises about Florida, let me know. I went there last year for a week, to Orlando specifically. It is an amazing place, one of the greatest places in America.
I agree! Also after watching this, I made the mistake of wearing my wedge sandals to take my dog outside. I about tripped. I guess wedge sandals aren’t very useful anywhere…
For those who don't believe Rick about the crowds, I have this to say: go to Diagon Alley and stand halfway up the staircase next to Gringotts where Hagrid's motorcycle is. Do this around 2pm. That's usually when the locals and season passholders come. They come in TIDAL WAVES. It was shocking to see. Of course, make sure you get ice cream from Fortescue's beforehand! 😁
I love your videos, I'm watching you from Belgium ! I didn't know about the free water, thanks for the tip. I'm going to Universal Studios for the second time next February, I hope to be able to see you over there and say: Don't miss the magic, don't miss the fun !! Keep doing what you do, it's fantastic and it brings me back to the parks whenever I'm watching your videos. :-D
I disagree with Point 3. I would rather share every ride with my wife and miss a few rides at the end of the day. Though she hates big thrill rollercoasters and I go for single riders for them
I had a friend come back from Uni after Diagon Alley opened and asked me, "Where was the Harry Potter land, we couldn't find it!" I felt so terrible for them.
Hi Rix, please would you be able to help me with a question. I am from the UK, and visit Orlando most years. When I go to Disney, customer relations put a DAS pass onto my Disney planner to access the virtual queues, as I have malignant melanoma cancer and need to stay in the shade while queuing. I have not visited Universal in a while but have booked for the end of the year. Do Universal have a similar scheme? Hope you might know. Love watching your vlogs and information is knowledge. 😊
Great tips and video. It’s so funny It took me watching a video to know that Nocturn alley was there, and Even Diagon Alley. And I have heard many others say the same thing. It seems so simple or obvious, but I guess when you are at the parks, you get so distracted and excited, that you miss many things lol
Thank you for the collapsible cup tip!! Can you advise of the least expensive time(s) of year to stay at hard rock resort? It’s my son’s favorite, but the cost is what stands in our way of going more often:(
I don't consider not knowing the free tours a mistake. When members spend the money for annual passes, the lists of benefits and emails and even guest services don't mention you get free tours. It's literally written no where, how did you find out about it?
3:37 so true! i was walking to diagon alley when some tourists stopped me ( i was wearing slytherin robes and had a wand in my hand ) they asked “where’s the diagon alley entrance” i was like uhh follow me cuz i’m going that way lol
OK I have to disagree with you on the maps. I enjoy them I can see / read them in the sun something that is very difficult if any with a CP.. Sea World went to the cheep side and stopped using paper maps. I had the most horrible time trying to see the map on my CP missed show times because we didn't know how to use the app. I'm not a 1st timer at the parks but I will take a paper map any day of the week. Maybe the parks should offer a printable PDF version. I would print a map at home or use my portable printer.

I definitely made many of these rookie mistakes. Most memorable walking around trying to find the entrance to Diagon Alley.
I’m not a rookie but I love the paper maps, call me old fashioned 🙈
You are a rookie - those that know the parks well always use an app. To be seen with a map (publicly) is one of the worst ways to embarrass yourself in front of the locals
@@blackbeard6423 seriously
@@sharonbateman2513 Next time you're there, try it. People will treat you and your group differently. Standards.
I appreciate this, rookie mistakes not everyone gets a chance to go frequently. Not everyone has cellphones for apps etc
Yeah! Keep Disney outta Universal Orlando Resort! No Disney junk inside of Universal Orlando Resort!
As someone that only owns Star wars fanny packs I say screw that.. I'll have my Universal t-shirt on but Universals fanny-pack game is weak.
Great tips! Especially the collapsible cups.
The collapsible cup was brilliant!!!! No more carrying around a huge backpack with bottle of water..that’s sweet!
Thanks bro. This was so on point and well said!! I'm gunna talk your advice. The bag and water cup!! priceless!!
Forgetting to make dinner reservations at City Walk.
I forgot last year and got bumped to the 9P slot every day.
Who wants to carry all that? Go to the 1st aid station if you need it
Other rookie mistakes:
1) If you are wanting to go straight to Gringotts, use the 2nd Diagon Alley entrance beyond the 1st one.
It’s busy out there 🫤
@@bjornemccomb8262 I take a private dongle for yourself next time and you will have more time to go on the rides and see the parks
Another rookie mistake: not saying “Well done dragon” after she breathed fire.😜
We went to Universal on wed. It was a poop show. Rides kept breaking down. On line for hulk for 45 min. Ride broke down.
Went over to Harry Potter area did 3 rides. Went to volocoaster broke down. Had to be evacuated off off Kong.
Single rider lines got me and bf on a couple of rides so much faster😎great tip
you are right when you say single rider lines are not worth it for Jurrascoaster, but you miss so much if you do single rider for any of the HP rides.
The only good advice was the foldable cup. Thanks for the idea!
Such a helpful video!! Thanks 😊
This is a trip for getting to the park. If you are renting a car, Florida has toll roads to save travel time the Florida DOT sells temporary toll fast passes and you can buy them in the Orlando Airport.
Oh my gosh I could not find Diagon Alley for 30 minutes yesterday. Wish I had watched this before then!
Yeah... don't complain. Don't be a Karen.
@@ryverwynd she will only be thinking about the Hogwarts express - you’ve been on it - good for you. But there are many out there with a dream, a lifetimes ambition to get on it. Think of those people and their feelings. Thank you.
The entrance to diagon alley we missed our first trip there. Thought it was an entrance to bathrooms. Lol.
My 10 Loungefly mini backpacks thank you for that great info at the end LOL. I was wondering about that, thank you!
Thanks for the video. Will check out your others. Coming to florida in a few weeks
I wish I will find this video before we went to Universal Studios in October! Thank you for the great information!
Another mistake is if a guest is going to be visiting Universal Orlando for more than 3 times within a year should obtain a season pass.
That transition to diagon alley was cool
Thank you for the great tips! We’re headed to Universal Studios next week. Feeling well-prepared and super excited for the experience 😀
my only wish is that you did universal studios california. you seem really good at knowing your stuffs
Thank you for this helpful video. Do they allow guests to bring their own water bottle in with them? For example: a Nalgene.
Yes, you can bring your own bottles in. You can even sneak booze in this way!
Thank you for all of your videos. We did made some mistakes but we still handled it like a pro because of your videos.
I use the app and the paper map. Love the paper map.
Absolutely spent too much time trying to find Diagon Alley last year. From across the park I could see the dragon but when we got close, she disappeared. I was so mad!
I thought for sure that you were going to say- standing on the moving platform 😂
Everyone here who’s giving the advise thank you😊
Thank you, Eloisa.
My grandmother warned us that it rains at 4ish everyday lol it did while we were in Florida
The last one… is SOOOO TRUE!!!
This is too funny 😂 I love this
I feel so bad for this man extent of going on rides and in joying his day there he decided to help us true legend
THANK U FOR MENTIONING WEARING THE DISNEY SHIRTS TO UNIVERSAL!!!!!!!!!!! I USED TO WORK THERE. NEVER UNDERSTOOD THE DISNEY SHIRTS❤️❤️❤️❤️
It makes me sick as well. You are not alone.
Love the video Rick!! I will be so prepared before our trip in October
I disagree with Point 3. I would rather share every ride with my wife and miss a few rides at the end of the day. Though she hates big thrill rollercoasters and I go for single riders for them
Fanny pack gets me every time pmsl 🤣🤣🤣 coming from the Scotland a fanny is something way different 🤣 brilliant vlog as ever 👌🏻
Bum bag for the UKers
Me too I nearly fall on the floor every time I here it
Might be a sunshine state but we’re also the lightning capitol in the world
I had a friend come back from Uni after Diagon Alley opened and asked me, "Where was the Harry Potter land, we couldn't find it!" I felt so terrible for them.
Awesome! Thanks for the tips. Just found out, it's a small world. My sister is Ginger princess! And y'all know each other 😀
We’re doing this again this year and I’m gonna catch Rick this time I swear
Great tips! Can't wait for our trip in September
My son is there now from England 🏴😘❤️. I’m coming in September from England 🏴❤️❤️
Can confirm rookie mistake of not knowing where diagon alley was. Day 3 was like hey where are all those people going....oh
Love this video Rick! Thank you for sharing! 💙🖤💙
Don't forget to not stand on the moving sidewalks. If you do want to stand please stand on one side so people can pass you on the other.
Excellent stuff
I got a Marvel loungefly for my trip since it works at both 😁
I’ve been visiting the park for years and only found out about Nocturne Alley recently from a TH-cam video!
