I ran it there is nothing like it in the world :) Your training plan landed me a PB as well which i'm pleased about, i did however run the Bristol half marathon weekend just gone and it really puts in perspective how great the north run is, the Bristol half was good but no where near the North run. Was a great day!
There's actually many road races with many more participants: 1-A run for the Pasig River (Philippines) - 116000 2- Bay to Breakers (USA) - 110000 3- Cursa el Corte Ingles (Spain) 109457 etc The Great North run is only 15th.
Ben, I've become quite fond of your videos, so when you take a few days off, I really start to miss them! I thought the bridge was called Emergency Window for a second...
I did the GNR this year. It was my first HM and the longest distance I've ever ran. I absolutely loved it! The atmosphere is amazing and I didn't stop smiling the whole way. Ended up coming home and signing up for more events and hopefully will be doing it again next year. Look forward to seeing your run tomorrow. I bet you'd finished before I'd even started 😂
@@kevinscott4938 both Starbuck and vegan sausage rolls are good, I just think it was funny as Ben makes fun of people for having Starbucks, while never having one. The same as people make fun of vegan sausage roll without having one.

I ran it couple years ago and this was my first time it was excellent 207 not fast but now improved to 153 this year so well chuffed after watching your blog
I over sleep and miss my train to Stockholm ( 500km) get a place on the next train so I can catch up with my sister and take the boat to Finland ( Helsinki) meet up with our cousin. And I relaise I have forgot my running west no big deal. But I also forgot my running shoes.. In to a store, get new shoes and run a marathon. my feet was in a really really god shape, 1 tiny tiny bless on my little toe
Good to know I can buy Maurten gels from Start Fitness. :) just bought one of your t shirts today. I love this channel, watching your progress and getting great tips.
Yeah! Whatever amount was in that box was all they had left.. so was lucky! Thank you Sophie.. you should have it in a couple of days.. appreciate the support!
Does anyone else use gels for a half? I've never gone above a half marathon racing, and I don't use gels at all (aiming for 1:13 in a few weeks for reference). Was just surprised to see you planning on taking in so many gels for the race
I probably take more than ‘average’ .. although as you will see tomorrow I dropped a gel early on, so didn’t have it at the end when I needed it!! Aiming for that time you obviously know what works for you though and now isn’t the time to try adding gels, so close to the race.. but maybe experiment in your training after the event. All the best for 1:13!
Ben Parkes of course I’ll be watching it. I’ve just got back from chamonix from some doing some steep stuff, so happy to watch you do the flat stuff 😂😉
Yes a Southern Softie for sure with gloves in September. Look at Event Clips you never need to use safety pins again. Did my first GNR booked up for next year 👊
@@BenParkes Cheers Ben! You're definitely right, one of the most stressful journeys in the end. Was 30 seconds off my PB (17:57) but considering I was quite ill I was fairly happy in the end
Run video as usual. If you only built up to 30-35 miles per week and are running a half in 3 weeks, do you recommend a 10k the day before as part of your "tapering"? :) Seriously, though, with that mileage I was only looking at a half hour on Monday and Wednesday, with 20 min on Friday (Saturday is race day). Is that too low?
Hey! Yes.. 10k the day before might be a bit much.. :-) Maybe 45 mis on Monday, 30 in Wednesday then 15-20 on Friday if you're feeling good. Remember to try and do these runs on the easy side. All the best have hope it goes well!
Great vlog, looking forward to part 2. I ran the GNR for the first time the steady incline was tough really enjoyed it. The vitality big half is still my favourite
Big half is certainly much flatter. I’ll be there next year for sure! The inclines at great north were certainly more Thani was expecting.. really hard about mile 11!!
Thanks for the vlog. Personally I just cant handle races with many runners. Just been running i Copenhagen with 25000 runners. I think it's 10000 to many... So many people stresses me and also makes running at a fixed pace, close to impossible, for me. I think those big events are good for the running-sport, but if I wanted a sport where I feel squashed and cramped, I would have chosen rugby 😁
Who's run the Great North Run?? Is there any better half marathon?!
Ben Parkes I ran the junior great north run came fourth and I saw you on the millennium bridge
Yay! Well done, that's a great result. Hope you had fun running the route.. it looked so much run around the river!
Thanks you looked great at the end near the sea

Great to hear about your PB Ryan! Congratulations on the result and well done on all the hard work that must have gone to get the result!
Mo Farah pulling off a 59:07 for the win. Do you think He'll be able to compete with the big boys in the marathon come 2020?

Well that’s just amazing to hear Carla!! Running with a smile on your face.. that’s what it’s all about! 🙌
I did the GNR this year too. My first ever half marathon at the grand old age of 52! Partly inspired to do it by this channel, so thanks Ben!
Great to hear Steven!! Never too late to start 🙌 kudos to you on having a go and getting it done!!
Ben: Makes fun of people going to Starbucks to get a coffee.
Also Ben: buys a vegan sausage roll from Greggs
To be fair...Im not vegan, but a Vegan Cornish pasty or a Vegan Sausage roll is lovely!

Paul Kirkland ha I keep forgetting he’s never had tea or coffee.
Great time...
Looking forward to the Berlin marathon
Greetings from Germany
Nice update Ben, look forward to the race itself.
Loved this 👍
Thanx Ben, and Sarah of course, for the hat! Got mine yesterday and it's really awesome!
Great to hear Niklas! Enjoy running in it! :-)
Ben Parkes think it’s gonna help me getting a new PB, don’t you? 😉😛🏃♂️💨💥
100%!!
Woop woop new video! PS I broke my Parkrun PB by 2min 24sec!
WELL DONE Rudolph! That's HUGE!! Wow, great effort.
@@BenParkes thanks! Aiming for a sub 20 at the end of the year (currently on 23:19... down from my first Parkrun which was 38:38)

I was there too! Enjoyed it so much signed up to be a member for the next 3 years. Can’t wait for 2020 already!
Love how you are shouting at Sarah to run, like a dad haha! Good luck in Berlin Ben!
Saw at least 3 of your hats at CW50 last weekend!
I heard there was a few on the course. Hopefully helping shade the runners from that hot sunshine.. All the best David!

Love the banter, great vid👍

All the best Phillip. I've never done XC, but maybe this year I'll have to give it a go.. and take the camera along for fun!
It’s all about the pink gloves!
i got some spares of maurten gels if you need it in berlin!!
You missed Pink Lane Coffee just round the corner from the Greggs!
Maurten 100 Gels (I use then now.... after Hayley Carruthers visited our club and did a fabulous talk about her running)
Okay that Garmin watch looks awesome, all the running features 😦
i'm with Sarah on the coffee front mate, if you don't drink coffee you don't understand, although star bucks isn't a great option either
You came to my hometown and I didn't even know

Not needed at all, you can run 20k on an empty stomach without affecting performance. Just have to push through.
You can totally do them without them, but for someone like Ben who runs very regularly and knows what works for him, why change
Hi Ben, in regards to your gel strategy, what is it normally for a marathon? Great video again, your recovery from the trip was smoothly done😆
Usually 5 gels for me.. which I do on distance normally in a marathon. 8/15/22/30/35 ish.. in K's. Glad you liked it James!
I'm sure you'll do great..... hang on I know the result already as it was last week, I know you did great :) yet another great video Ben
Thanks Marc! Race day video will be up tomorrow.. just finishing the edit now, so you can see how it happened if you want to! All the best to you

Pizza the night before a race, awesome 👌 I often have pizza the day before a race, seems to work well 🙌
I even have pizza without a race 😜
Always Pizza for me!
I once forgot my number for a 5K because I left it in a draw. Managed to drive back home, pick it up and made it 15 minutes before the start
