    Raw Therapee Basics: The New Local Adjustments
    In this weeks video I start a series looking at the powerful new Local Adjustments available in the development build of Raw Therapee, and these adjustments will also be in the next public release.
    If you thought conventional local adjustments such as those in Lightroom were great, you will find the Raw Therapee local adjustments leave those streets behind.
    Imagine Lightrooms local adjustments hybridised with those of Capture One, then cross-bred with U-Point technology and then feed the result a huge dose of steroids!
    There are multiple tools you can add to 'adjustment spots' to make changes to dynamic range, colour, contrast, noise reduction any virtually anything else you can think of. Plus, you can control the reach and scope of the adjustments with both transition controls and shape detection, and you can gain even tighter control with preview 'masks'.

    First time I came upon one of your tutorials; “nah, I don’t want to spend my time on that guy!”

    Local adjustments are what a lot of us are waiting for. So far I mostly rescued myself with the Graduated Filter and in some seldom cases with the Vignette Filter. But that is just a relief for much bigger pains.
    Accidentally I found yesterday “Art RawTherapee”. It seems to be worth to take a look. It has some other interesting features, too. I hope they, Art and RawTherapee, can join their paths instead of drifting away one from another.

      I have ART on my system, as well as Darktable - but the shear scope and power of RT is superior to both - in my opinion of course Ricardo😀 Within the RT local adjustment tools are masks and even Blend Modes a la Photoshop - all these will be covered over the next few months on this channel.

    Have you dropped using a camera in your recent videos? I just randomly stumbled upon this channel and video, and having then checked the newest ones I noticed the difference... What I meant to say was that the camera view does make your talking session a lot more comfy-nice, and I do think you have things to offer with your funny facial expressions.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      😆😆😆👍 Yes, I have - temporarily! I used to use an Osmo Pocket but it's not a streaming cam so the video and audio had to be dragged into the timeline of the desktop recording and then synched with the desktop audio - it all became a bit of a chore to be honest. But I know what you mean, and personally I'd rather have me on there as well. A small cam with streaming that is recorded by the compter capture software would be great but the budget won't stretch that far at the moment.

    Outstanding, Andy -many thanks. I’m learning more and more about RT but sometimes are still struggling with the complexity. Would be great if you can give some start-to-finish tutorials with selected photos, e.g. from landscape shootings. Other observation: For my Nikon D3100 RAWs I see some strange colors (magenta color cast in highlights) after import, in contrast to Lightroom & C1P. Could it be that RT is not that good in handling files from certain camera models? Do I use wrong import settings?

Unlike with the changes YT decided to implement with the other subscriptions and stop sending out those email notifications 😡
    Very nicely presented demonstration of "things to come" in future models of RT Andy 👍 Looks very impressive - even with those (present?) limitations of the "delimiters". Agree with your observations (😎😉) about having multiple 'handles/points' to move would be beneficial. Certainly looking forward to your next demo with the landscape shot... shots? 👍

    Suggestion for a video.
    Lately there have been a lot of youtubers suggesting getting files into CMYK space before sending it to their inkjet printers. But others say leave that to the algorithms in your printer's driver. And some print shops express horror at the idea of anybody sending them files in CMYK, (since they might have different versions of CMYK) What's your take on this. Should we leave our printer-ready photos in an RGB color space like ProPhoto or convert them. Is this worth a video? A way to clarify this issue.
    And, as if to muddy the waters more, some paint software meant for artists (like Krita, ChaSys Draw etc) seem to use CMYK as the main working color space.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  ปีที่แล้ว

      Not seen any one suggest that myself Ray! How to confuse the f*** out of your printer driver - send it CMYK instead of the rgb it expects. And what conversion factor are they using? It's total BS would be my instant reaction. But send me link to a video that suggests it and we'll see.

    Hi Andy, I am new to Rawtherapee and to your great tutorials. I have watched your two videos on Local Adjustments and they really helped me tremendously. I also looked at the RawPedia section on Local Adjustments and found it to be rather confusing. I tried to follow along with the step by step guide for their examples just to practice. I have a couple of questions. They are consistently saying to use the lockable color picker and select 3 or 4 different color but they never say why you should do it or what to use the information for. You didn't do this in either of your videos. The other question I have is a bit further down the page where they are changing the color of the green leaves. They say to use the a and b components of the "Lab" on the color correction grid. Then they have you move the two points on the grid to opposite corners for the color swap. I don't understand how to find the "a" and "b" components or how to move the central dot on the color grid (I thought it was fixed). I would appreciate your clarification on these items. I find RawPedia to be quite variable in terms of clarity and ease of understand. Thank you for your help and for all the videos you have on RawTherapee. I am a new subscriber also. Aaron

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Aaron - the colour pickers just give you an indication of how much your adjustments are changing the areas in the feathering area of the tool - so you might want to expand or contract that feathering; if you follow my meaning. Personally, I can't be bothered with them, and I just use my eyes!
      BTW - "they" are just one person, Jaques Desmis, who is the main coder for most of the tools in RT. Super-nice guy, brilliant academic, but he loses me after about 30 seconds!
      If you click on the white dot in the centre of the grid and drag it around, you'll see a line with the white dot at one end and a black dot at the other - you can click 'n drag that too.
      But to be honest, I find no use for this function whatsoever. When it comes to that sort of thing, I prefer colour correction regions.
