    I bought this about a year ago for groceries and other trips where a backpack or panniers don't have the capacity. It works great and tracks very well behind the bike. Having the mounting point on the rear axle as opposed to higher up on something like the seat post gives it more stability. I was initially a bit worried that the vinyl liner would not be robust enough, but it has been holding up well so far.

    I think I'd be tempted to throw some 3M material spoke reflectors on the wheels, as a passive reflector. For those of you who might not know, 3M material is the stuff used on reflective road signs. It reflects light back along the same axis it shines from. If you've ever seen the behind the scenes shots of Marlon Brando in Superman, the costume he had was made from 3M. So, when a light mounted on the same axis as the camera shone on the material, it glowed incredibly brightly. Otherwise, it remained a dull gray. Well - there are lots of companies putting that 3M material on reflectors for bicycle spokes. They just clip on, don't need any maintenance (other than keeping clean) and help keep you that little bit safer on the road.

    It all depends what kind of or how much cargo or shopping you want to carry.
    I would often go to the supermarket on my bike 6km away for an "in between main shop" with 2 x 20 litre (€10 each cheap from Lidl 4 years ago) pannier bags instead of taking the car.
    I'd fill them literally to overflowing and another bag and/or box on the carrier in between.
    I'd love to show you pictures but alas......
    Now I have got a large sized dog trailer (€130 from Amazon) so I can leave the car at home even more (We don't have a dog but I wanted something completely covered, secure and self contained)
    Pack your large reusable shopping bags at the checkout as you would if you had the car with you.
    Just sit the bags already packed inside the trailer the same as you would into the boot of your car and zip it up.
    Throw any other loose miscellaneous items in anywhere, large or small. Nothing needs to be secured. Nothing will fall or get blown out.
    Most "cargo" trailers are actually relatively small 😟
    which is another reason I got the bigger dog trailer.
    I carry between 40 to 60kgs load as a full family grocery shopping.
    It is a bit like pulling a tent on wheels particularly empty and certainly the opposite of aerodynamic but it's working out very well and not so hard to pull fully loaded.
    I have considered folding the cabin down flat when pulling it empty to reduce the wind resistance but on the other hand with the cabin fully erect it's highly visible on the road which is an added safety bonus for the little extra effort pedaling.
    There are no cycle lanes where I live so I'm mixing it with all traffic on the streets and roads.
    My only "moment" with it was the first time using it where going up the very steep ramp to exit the supermarket underground car park, I pulled up on the bike handlebars to put a little more weight on the pedals and with the unaccustomed weight on the back I caused the front wheel to rear up.
    I had to dismount or fall off and walked it up the rest of the ramp.
    Thankfully there was no one around to see and cause me any embarrassment!!!😳
    I was prepared for it the next time and no problems since.
    Thankfully too, the only substantial hill is coming down on the way home!
    This is what I'm doing and it's working very well.
    Every time I use it there's a nice little feeling of achievement which is good I think.
    So, if someone is looking for a trailer to fill a family's weekly shopping into I would suggest you might consider the slightly left field option of a good quality large or extra large dog trailer.
    See what you think.......

    Recently bought some flat pack furniture and have been looking at cargo bikes and was like ‘okay that’s one thing I’d need to get delivery, rent a car or get someone else to pick it up for me’ and then I saw this! Still more interested in shopping style cargo stuff, but really cool too see various things designed for different situations.
    Also hoping that the shop I bought from and other shops has more delivery options in future so I could actually arrange drop off times, aka when I’m at home rather than working, instead of treating it like a ‘regular package’ aka they drop it off at your home whenever and if you’re not there they just leave it or charge you for the return fee etc. but growing pains as shops extend into new areas that will hopefully be worked out over time. Although I did manage to find something that fit my needs and into my car, so it did work out in the end, but super happy to see bike trailers that look like they could handle a flat pack!

    I got a cheap Chinese knock off and it's better than that at about just over a fifth of that price (£ - $ ratio) £59.99 I paid shipped from China. It has 4 sides, it is higher on each side than that one, plus it came with a cover in red and black to match the livery I have on my bike and panniers too. I was advised that I should not take it passed 20 mph, well, sorry went way passed - was doing nearly 50 mph coming downhill and no problem, a bit of over bounce on the bumps though which was hairy! Oh they can make you brake to the right a bit. I noticed that. They have a tendency to deflate in the tyres but hey, it's only two minutes with a pump. Not seen your channel before, pretty cool. Greetings from Yorkshire.

    I have a Travoy, but my wife and I want to go camping. Rather than try to get everything into the Travoy, which is very doable, we are thinking about getting a flatbed to spread out the load and to facilitate packing/unpacking as there will be no need to squish everything into as small a space as possible. We canoe so have some good strong dry bags that could be filled and strapped into the flatbed with ease.

    • @uncrunch398
      @uncrunch398 ปีที่แล้ว

      This also has a much higher weight cap and gets out of the way to let you mount a rack for even more. I would put the sturdiest fitting rack I could find and still limit the weight there for stability. Make sure to use a thread gripping product so the screws don't fall out as they did on mine. It broke heavily loaded, now I have to replace the entire unit. Not super expensive. Frustrating anyway.

    I look forward to the comparison between the Travoy and the Flatbed. Like you said, the Travoy can easily be taken into the store so I would be less worried about leaving it unattended. But would be curious how my groceries would do on the Travoy, I would assume it would just be a learning curve of how to best pack the bags. I may have found a $10 kids bike trailer to use in the meantime. Condition is yet to be determined though.

    • @BillOweninOttawa
      @BillOweninOttawa 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Travoy is just a 'bag' on wheels. Fill that bag. Go. We've been doing it for ten years now, (with the same Travoy) Just pack it sensibly with the heavy stuff on bottom. You'll be fine. If we are getting a lot of stuff, I will wear a fairly large knapsack for delicate/crushable items like bags of chips or tomatoes. I pack eggs in the Travoy on the top, and have never had an issue (bring some elastics to hold the carton closed)

    Why do they always place the axle farther back than the centre line of the bed of the trailer as this puts strain on the hitch and needlessly transfers the cargo weight to the rear wheel of the bike and consequently the spokes.
    Why not place the axle in the centre of the flat bed keeping the cargo weight on the trailer and its wheels?

    • @panzerwolf494
      @panzerwolf494 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because of the push button wheels. All of the weight on them ruins the pin/socket faster. So engineers design them to put some of the weight on the arm and bike. Yes, it's nice to quickly break down, but that comes at the cost of life span of the trailer before the axles give out

    • @MrClayph0to
      @MrClayph0to 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      My girlfriend and I spent alot of time going back and forth between the Burley Flatbed and the Nomad. The main considerations:
      1) How well does the cloth floor hold up? And how easy is it to modify them into solid floors without significantly altering the frame? Such as is there a way you could cut a piece of plywood to fit the interior frame and lock it down without drilling holes into the frame?
      2) With all the grocery and retail shopping we were planning, four sided containment of cargo was a major concern with the flatbed.
      3) With the add-on Accessory rack on the Nomad, how did add weight to the top affect balance, stability, and handling? Especially once you have more than about 10 pounds on it.
      4) What kind of tire pressures do you need to run to prevent hopping and flipping the trailer when empty. Yet not worry about ruining rims or pinch flatting when loaded?
      5) Was there a weight limit at which it felt sketchy to ride the bike. And was that under the rated weight limit? Such as at 70 pounds, does the trailer seem perfectly fine. But rim brake pads easily overheat?
      6) Does the width of the Flatbed cause problems slipping through bollard blockades at bike paths?
      For what it's worth, we ended up with a Nomad. Haven't used it enough to have a firm opinion of it yet. But above are some of the questions we came up as we were debating our blind purchase.
