Who is here because this song is still as delightful as it was in the 80's?

This song has a maturity to it in that it's wistful, bittersweet; but also expresses the joy of being alive. An all-time classic.

I've seen Metallica, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden, but the loudest concert I ever saw was Bob Mould touring for this album at Augustana College in Rock Island, IL. I was in the front row though. It was one of my favorite shows ever.

I should add, protect your ears; I'm over 50 and wish I'd worn ear protection to every show I ever went to. I also play guitar and bass and have not taken the greatest care there either. I have to have some kind of white noise when I go to sleep at night.

I’m glad you said it. It’s criminal that the only alt band of the 80’s to make it really big was R.E.M., meanwhile Husker Du, the Replacements, Pixies, Dinosaur Jr., etc…remained “underground” and supported primarily by hardcore fans. See a Little Light is a perfect Alt-pop song and should have been massive. If it had been released 4 or 5 years later during Alt Rock’s brief mainstream reign, it would have been all over radio and would be considered a classic by more than just people like us.

Listen to Husker Du as the others mentioned. I'd start with Candy Apple Grey since it's probably their most accessible or the song "Don't Want to Know if You Are Lonely". The band was a huge influence on Green Day. They did the punk rock rock opera before American Idiot with Zen Arcade. Green Day covered the song I mentioned above too. Them, Pixies, The Replacements, and Dinosaur Jr. laid the groundwork for 90's alternative and beyond.

Listen, there's music in the air
I heard your voice coming from somewhere
But look how much we've grown
Well, I guess I should have known
As the years go by, they take their toll on you
Think of all the things we wanted to do
And all the words we said yesterday
Well, that's a long time ago
You didn't think I'd really go now
Are you waiting? I know why
    You're already saying goodbye
Are you ready? I know why
    I see a little light
    I know you will
I can see it in your eyes
    I know you still care
But if you want me to go
    You should just say so
    (Chorus)
Are you waiting? I know why
    You're already saying goodbye
Are you ready? I know why
    I see a little light
    I know you will
I can see it in your eyes
    I know you still care
    I see a little light
    I know you will
I can see it in your eyes
    Ah, ah, ah, ooh

I think its funny and cute that the show introduced some teens to a few well known 80s songs like Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart." But I can't blame anyone for not previously being aware of Bob Mould. He's one of the lead singers of a post-punk/hardcore band from the 80s called Husker Du, which some have heard of, and they're a legend in the alternative rock scene, but they're certainly not a super widely recognized band. So a solo track by one of the singers from said band is even more obscure. But I'm very glad that you found this song. Very good show too.

Same with Selena's cover of "Only You" and countless other songs that started the New Wave sound of the 80s. (Cure, Alarm, Joy Division, etc. the music makes the show) Looking forward to Season 2.

I remember years ago watching the first season of thirteen reasons why. The end of the first season this score plays and I literally typed in a few words from the lyrics then bam I found it. Crazy how 6 1/2 years later and here I am again listening to this once again. Not to mention I only like the newer generation rap because I’m a youngin

I lost touch with Bob Mould's music after Husker Du broke up in the 1980s, but this is good stuff - glad to reconnect.

BTW, a lot of people correctly note the "Who" inspiration for the sound of this song. It's actually better than any of Townsend's solo material - but check out "Slit Skirts" for a similar feel. This is a better song than "Slit Skirts" but listen to them back to back anyway.

I would never normally respond to a random message while listening to youtube... but I too feel that "we built this city" is maybe the finest example of sell out horrible rock... and often use it as an example of what is wrong.... your comment left me laughing out loud on a Monday morning... not an easy thing in Detroit...Cheers..

Just finished his book, which was illuminating, to say the least...I remember how disappointed I was with this record when it was first released, still under the spell of Husker, but the years have been kind to it. Keep evolving, Bob, you're in the pantheon.

@@themilkman3333 its a Netflix show series, the full name of it is "13 reasons why" its about a girl who commits suicide but before her death she made 13 diffrent cassette tapes, in each tape featured an individual and each tape goes on to talk about that individual and lables them as a reason why she committed suicide.

ignoring his forays into 'electronica', everything bob's done has been neglected commercially, yet it's all been brilliant from the huskers to solo and sugar. the man to whom nirvana and pixies owe a huge debt for laying the groundwork for their successes.
